    Riding out the storm in pender county. Miracle that it's been downgraded but still devastating storm surge and flooding. This is the price we pay to enjoy surfing, fishing, and hunting on the Carolina coast. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Everyone be safe.

    You should look up how to tie an FG knot. It's the best braid to mono knot. I'm sold on it. Morningtide fishing on youtube taught me. Yew!

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love that knot... no what happened with breaking the fish off, was our leaders had knicks from casting into the schools. 15lb leader getting tangled amongst hundreds of fish.

    the surfing/fishing footage is sweet, but I think it's a shame guys are trying to build "careers" around the endless self promotion of social media and vlogging.

    • @gwall4603
      @gwall4603 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I respectfully disagree. I feel that the vlogs, footage, and especially insight/shared wisdom produced by these awesome guys and gals is helping to shape their audience into being better people. It inspires us to be awesome. I'm never going to be able to surf like the pros. But I have days of good surfing and good fishing with my dad. I think Brett is just sharing the epic nature of life and geography. Something we should all be proud of. Keep sharing!

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My career was built long before i started Vlogging, and definitely before social media took off. Getting into Magazines was the main goal, performing in contest, and videos (dvds) being last. I then built a career off surfing waves like Pipeline, and barrels at home, and editing my own videos. It is weird promoting yourself sometimes for sure, but the Vlog came into play because I wanted to enlighten people on life at my home in general. I wanted to shed information on what professional surfing is really like, and not try and be fake on social media making things always look perfect. Sometimes you have bad sessions, sometimes you don't catch fish, etc. etc...
      Most people on social media want their lives to look perfect to everyone on the outside. I just want to be transparent and put out content that people enjoy. It is a weird area to be in, as far as self promoting, but I just love to stoke people out, and if it can be done through video, then that's rad. But it's definitely not for everyone.

    your good at surfing and all but u don't seem that cool like u always have a bummed mood about the waves. always annoys me when you comment badly on the surf sesh like just be happy u had the sesh

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ya know... your comment has made me think about some things.
      First off, I'm never in a bummed mood, but just relaying factual stats on how the waves were. BUT, in saying that, I'm now seeing how it could come off.
      But secondly... I'm wondering why it is i always feel the need to explain the imperfections in the swell? I know part of it is because I've grown up in a place with consistently good waves, so our standards for surf conditions are much higher. But I'm thinking the other part has to do with my profession. I think subconsciously, I want there to be reason for not getting a bunch of good clips in a session, and i want to relay that reason, so maybe others don't think I was surfing bad or something. I know thats stupid, and I think your comment alone has kind of made me aware of that. I had a lot of fun surfing all of these days. The surf the last day actually was really difficult and not super fun, but i enjoyed it anyway, it just got cut short unexpectedly due to the winds.
      I might touch on all this in a future vlog. I appreciate the honesty! And it's going to make me think about the way i discuss the waves in videos to come. I know I've always tried to downplay the wave conditions to friends after surfing, cause i don't want them to be bummed they missed it, but i think for the videos thats the wrong way to go about it.
      Please know, I'm almost always in a good mood. :)

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I just went back and watched this edit again (which i'll do from time to time with episodes). I know your comment is based off more than this video... but i will say, the one time i was bummed out in this video, towards the end, had a LOT to do with the heavy weight of Hurricane Florence bearing down on my home. Still going to work on what you mentioned... but wanted to bring to light the realities of what was going on throughout this episode. It's hard to be excited over waves when you know in 2 days your homeland will possibly be facing destruction.
