1:27 gives me chills every time. Winslow is just lost in his obsession and has now fully embraced the concept of terminating another human being for it! And he's savoring every bit of his madness.
This is the first album that I ever owned. I begged my mother to buy it for me after seeing the movie 6 times in 1974. I got it for my 11th birthday in February 1975. I still have every song memorized.

Being honest, I did feel sorry for Beef. He's not the one who stole Winslow's music, got him arrested, and disfigured him. And Beef even did try to flee the area, but was forced back in. He didn't deserve to die.

William Hurt plays the narcissistic, pompous ass college professor/ writer, who is always smugly saying :"Less is more" to his daughter, his students, and any other wannabe writers. [The hypocrisy, however, is that he's not finished anything in years.] Gerrit Graham plays Oliver, a successful writer who supposedly uttered that inane phrase in a meeting with Hurt's character, years earlier. Upon meeting Oliver again [ at a dinner party, I believe], the professor repeats the phrase and recounts their previous meeting. Oliver- bless him- seems neither to recall meeting Prof. Ass, or uttering the "less is more" thing, skewering the professor's overblown ego without even trying. Sad and hilarious at the same time.
I LOVED watching this movie as a kid (I'm over 40)! And this was one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Beef just looked so damn funny with those faces he was making when he was being electrocuted! LOL!!

I remember watching this movie several times as a kid in the 90s. The Paradise concert is what got me hooked to this movie. 2024 is around the corner and it's going to be 50 years after its release date. This movie is a classic. We need a 4K version.💯
Even though Goethe's Faust is the most used version of the myth in the film, I like to believe The Hell of It serves as a reminiscent of the final chorus form Christopher Marlowe's play, were the angels advert the public from the dangers of power and the search of fame; or maybe Winslow in Heaven mocking Swan in Hell, kind of like Goethe's version were Faust is forgiven at the end.

Watch the extra at the end that gets down on the floor along side Winslow, cheering him on as he's dying, I read that they almost reshot that scene because of him, but De Palma left it in because it was so over the top. De Palma crammed so much in to this movie and it all works, Faust, The Picture Of Dorian Grey, Frankenstein, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari sets in Undeads Performance of Super LIke You, to name a few
The guy who was cheering Winslow on during his Death Crawl is credited as "Rock Freak" in the end credits. "Upholstery" is the same song as "Faust / I Was Not Myself Last Night". Everything in this film was thought of and/or released before Star Wars, so, ya.. there's that. BTW, I just recently bought the novelization of this film, and, WOW, it's .... super effed-up. Winslow is 17 years old and >insane

Beef was no transvestite... it is so clear that he played his part as a truly flamboyantly gay glam rocker. It's no secret that at that time many glam rockers were thought of as gay -- he just took that ball and ran with it. His performance was kick-ass all the way and this death scene was outrageous. Whatever he got paid wasn't enough.... one more thing; it's clearly evident that the songs were lip synced in a number of scenes... and I believe that he missed lip=syncing the words on purpose. That is another thing many singers get accused of.... because it's true.
Graham could actually sing that song. In fact he did it on stage live and many wondered why they did not use his voice in the movie like they did with William Finley.
Tbh, I kinda loved Beef. He actually tried to leave and heed Winslow's warning but he was forced to go out on stage and shake his ass.
Yeah. To me he was a serious person and a serious artist playing his role. Almost like a Marilyn Manson.

If I remember right De Palma later thought that he should have kept Graham's singing as well. Shower scene has his own voice and he was good enough.

It's not just the stage persona. In the parts where he TALKS he also speaks with a Liberace type voice and has very typically gay mannerisms.

I remember watching this on TV one night. The type of movie that you start watching, and for some reason, you can't stop doing so; even if you don't know what the heck is going on, you can't look away and you like it. Same thing that happened with The Rocky Horror Picture Show and All That Jazz. Thanks for the upload.
Beef was no transvestite... it is so clear that he played his part as a truly flamboyantly gay glam rocker. It's no secret that at that time many glam rockers were thought of as gay -- he just took that ball and ran with it. His performance was kick-ass all the way and this death scene was outrageous. Whatever he got paid wasn't enough.... one more thing; it's clearly evident that the songs were lip synced in a number of scenes... and I believe that he missed lip=syncing the words on purpose. That is another thing many singers get accused of.... because it's true.
