As always, great review. The quick hacking rules are better than when I beta tested them. I still think they can be OP for high level netrunners, especially with the Puppet and System Reset. Granted, the netrunner has to do a few actions to launch the attack. The upcoming Monster Fight Club's Edgerunner expansion to CPR: Combat zone with the crew's minis will be a nice compliment to this box set. My head canon for Jack Skorkowsky is he's kicking boots with Denny in North Oaks XD.
Yeah I might tone down the power of puppet a little especially. Although if you have the full red rules self-ICE can slow down quick-hacking a bit. It just costs slots in your neuroport.
Honestly the time of the Red seems really neat, but the 2070s and 2020s really are much more of what I want in a cyberpunk game over the 2040s, so I think it's cool having the Edgerunners kit
@@rpgchronicler An inverse exists, the conversion kit. Allows 2020 equipment to be carried forward into RED. And if you basically just convert everything from the 2020 book then you can theoretically just play 2020 with RED rules.

I also completely agree with the idea of symbols on die. I really find it annoying especially when they have one on both lowest and highest values.
Hey Seth, thanks for introducing me to the Cyberpunk 2020 TTRPG with your reviews. I played my first game with my family and we loved it. Looking forward to getting into Cyberpunk RED and this Edgerunners kit!
Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way but I always liked the 2040s setting more than the 2070s. The semi post apocalypse was always more interesting to me than the slightly static and inconsequential feeling of the more stable eras.
Both have their place, but I do find myself playing unstable semi-apocalypse cyberpunk more often. When cyberpunk settings become too stable, the space for being a punk gets squeezed very thin and it becomes harder to justify characters not just quietly tolerating corpo life.
What you bring to the table is unmatched: I'm thoroughly inspired by this video! - "Embrace your aspirations with unwavering determination and unwavering resolve."
Literally one of two RPG products I've ever pre-ordered. (The other being Chaosium's Pendragon 6E's Grey Knight and Player's Handbook). Can't wait to see your review of The Jacket.
Also of note about the art in this box, Studio Trigger (the very good and popular studio who animated and designed the characters of the anime) also designed the pregen characters. The backstory information given in the setting book for the Edgerunners characters was also written by the same people who wrote for the anime so that is also pretty proper to the characters.
Great review, always saw the RPG not playing during the computer game era as a big mistake. All the models and artworks alone and the familiarity just would have been such a big plus. When the sourcebook comes out I will totally pick it up.
I believe Red has been in the works since before CP77 even started development, and then CDPR didn't want the TTRPG spoiling the video game (the first Red release was in 2019, over a year before the video game). According to some recent statements, it sounds like CDPR even has creative control over the 2070s and onwards period, whilst R. Talsorian has creative control over the period before that, and doing the Edgerunners and 2077 sourcebook projects means having to coordinate with CDPR as opposed to just doing what they want in the Red time period.
This is a great product. I used this to introduce my D&D players to the game and two of them had watched the anime and one had played the video game. So it was a great story too. Great product as it includes EVERYTHING you need. +1
Excellent review. I always appreciate your directness and view. I have been a long time viewer and your game reviews are very helpful for me, especially as a keeper for CoC.
The reason why it's important that matching the target number doesn't make you pass the check is that the whole game is built on the principle that in case of tie the "passive" side wins and the "active" one loses. This applies to both normal checks against a DV and contested checks against an enemy roll, so it's consistent throughout the game. That's just one thing that I wanted to address, why people were so passionate about that single rule. Thanks a lot for review, the fact that you did play the included adventures is a huge plus and makes you much more reliable than people who just read the book "dry". :-)
Not having watched the anime beyond episode 1, I was very happy with the MK ánime-style art, a vast improvement over Red's dreary Current Year style. I had to do a fair bit of rules hacking to get Red combat to something I found acceptable. But the "ties fail" thing actually worked really really well in play to give that downbeat feel to the whole game & universe, a feeling that the odds are NEVER in your favour.
My group played the Edgerunners Mission Kit and enjoyed it enough that *everyone* wanted to try their hand at GMing after it was over, so since then we've been doing a round-robin/rotating-GM gigs-based campaign branching off of that, set in 2076/2077 using the core rules and the extra stuff from the Mission Kit. It's been going well so far (I can personally attest that Quickhacking feels great as a 2070s-era Netrunner), and I can't wait for a 2077 book proper.
It's a starter kit, but it's very much worth it and a lot of value. If you don't need the standees or dice, the PDF version is like 15 USD and is a steal at that price. It goes on sale periodically on drivethrurpg for even less. Right now the New Year sale has it for 9 bucks USD for a few days and that is *absolutely* a steal.
@SSkorkowsky yo boss, as a south American, any chances you tackle any book, game or scenario set in our neck of the woods? Cheers from Chile, land of Cthulhu and R'lyeh
I really like the rules on different ways of regaining humanity with the Edgerunners rules. I feel it encourages more RP while also giving a mechanical benefit .
Ive been meaning to pick it up but when I saw it at my LFGS i passed up on it, I feel now that it was a mistake. The problem for me when I saw it was that the maps didnt look like they were fold out. I love the idea of them being part of a system that lets us download the PDF stuff as well. I feel its a must buy now after seeing your video! Love that you brought up your old "alter ego" character from the 2020 system still to do narration too lol.
This is what I was hoping for when I got Red. Seeing that it was a rehash of Mike's failed attempt at CP3 hurt me. Seeing this, I'm glad they finally got their stuff together to make what it should have been from the start.
I also loved quickhacking in 2077. and largely not for the hacks themselves (though those are fun too) but because it slowed down time and gave you a bit of a breather in combat, like with VATS in fallout. allowed me to take things a lot more deliberately. really made me feel like a cyber enhanced merc who can calculate how hes going to tackle a situation in a fraction of a second. “hack the big guys eyes to stun him for a second, gorilla arm punch the small guy, and dash to cover before the big guy recovers”. that kind of stuff.
That NC map is definitely from 2077. The good old 2020 maps doesn't even correlate. I've been playing CP since 2013 and I really like the system (I even created a magic system for those who wanted a Shadowrun style game without the SR mechanics...) and this will help me do the Quick Hacks I wanted to bring in from 2077 and now I won't have to make it all up on my own. In the setting I have been working up, set in the me city of Baxter, which borders both NorCal and SoCal, I had also decided that a basic processor, neurolink, and Personal Link would come free of charge.
I'm not particularly fond of Edgerunners, but I'm really looking forward to the full 2077 sourcebook they're working on. In fact, my Cyberpunk game is on complete hold until that comes out.
Speaking of getting new art in a RPG book based on a series, Avatar Legends has a ton of New art set in the world of Avatar the Last Airbender. The book is not another game book full of still shots from the tv show and/or comic books thankfully.
As someone introduced to the Cyberpunk universe via 2077, I had debated getting Red at some point but I had concerns about really matchin' with what I know. Neat that they're at least attempting to bring at least a minor expansion for the latecomer chooms like this.
Dice should be ultra clear, highly visible and snap-recognizable, THEN they can be gorgeous or thematic, no symbols, unless you're something like Genesys where that's the point. I'm with you Seth.
With regards to art, I think the Star Wars RPG by Fantasy Flight Games (now Edge Studios) has a lot of new art that inspires the GM. One of the books has a piece showing a lightsaber duel on the outside of a Star Destroyer in the middle of an astroid field. One of my favorite rpg art pieces.
Yeah, no kidding the combat is deadly! I got the drop on the goons breaking into my apartment complex in The Apartment and schalacked the hell out of one with a .44 Mag Lever Action my buddy converted from 2020. Got blitzed by some Hand cannons on the crackback and had half my health gone in the first round. Luckily for me, that .44 Lever Action hits with 8d6+2 and has RoF 2 lol. Though we don't play it as more than a sort of on again, off again game, that beauty of a firearm has become something of a meme for that game.
I wished i hadn't seen this awesome review, now i have to get this. I'm so mad "witchoo!" I don't think that dice legibility is a nitpick, but a legit complaint. The game shouldn't have to come to a halt, just because a player or referee has to figure out what number(s) are on the die/dice. The Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit have the same problem. Chessex is my go-to when i want to find an equivalent when the dice aren't suitable, but there aren't any close matches to those dice.
I thought that this was going to be the first video I would have to tap out on so as not to spoil myself. (Someone in my group picked this up) Looking forward to hearing about the dystopian techno-hell I will avoid by stopping at the warning for 'The Jacket' (Might leave it playing on mute, just for the count)
Agreed about reusing stills from the show as interior art. Don't misunderstand, the Edgerunners series looks great. But there's something lost when it's individual frames plucked out and presented in isolation (meme value notwithstanding). When I look at it, it makes me feel like I'm looking at one of those cheap cashgrab D20 conversions from the early 2000s, like the Hellsing TTRPG from 2004. (NOT a flattering comparison). To be frank, I'd prefer the book use a bunch of promotional material, mixed with concept art from the show's production. So it seems less like a cheap book run to capitalize on sales, and more like an art book.
As to the DV requiring you to roll higher, my Cyberpunk RED table uses an equal or higher system simply because it's a lot more intuitive for us. That, and there's better chance of success, which is always more fun for us.
