Hey JP from Nedley in Mallorca ! Nice choice ! Gong are a wonderful, wacky delight with a cracking tight band that could do anything from funky to trippy to an out and out raging rocker. Leader Daevid Allen from Australia, went to the UK, was a founder of Soft Machine. In 1968 he ended up on our island of Mallorca, performing many times in the mountain town of Deia then moved to France and Australia but returned to Deia to perform from time to time. Unfortunately we never got to see that or meet him before his death in 2015.

Trippin Music! Although my chemical enhancement days are sadly long behind me, I look back fondly on them. And Gong was a big part of the soundtrack of my early years. Since the death of leader Daevid Allen a dude named Kavus Torabi has taken the Gong ball and run with it. And they're making really good music still and won't disappoint. Kavus has another band called Knifeworld that everyone should really hear as well.

Ok, this was very cool. I've never heard of Gong before you first reacted to them. I'm also glad you finally got back to RUSH. Still not sure why you went away from them for so long. You've also gone away from Renaissance. Really hope you get back to them too, and keep them in your rotation of all the interesting and unique music that you react to, along with YES, RUSH, Renaissance, and a few others that I 'greatly enjoy'. You're almost done with U.K. sadly, since they only put out 2 albums, though there's a couple songs on their live album that you should definitely check out. 'Night After Night' is a very good song, that I 'know' you'll enjoy. The other is called 'As Long As You Want Me Here'. Not sure if you'll like that one or not. I'm still not sure what I think of it, lol.
However, the band that I'll keep requesting until you react to them is Gypsy. I think they put out 4 albums, but I also 'think' each album wasn't as good as the previous one. The first album is great. I think their second album 'might' be worth listening to as well. Don't think the other 2 are worth it though. Don't 'think so' : )
Oh yes, 2 more song requests, which I highly recommend that you react to in one video. Brand X: 'The Poke' and 'Masques' (they're the first 2 songs on the album 'Masques') I'll just say this: Percy Jones plays a fretless bass, which I know you've already heard, since you've reacted to some Brand X before, but just trust me on this Justin, you want to hear Percy's bass on these 2 pieces of music. After all, have I ever steered your wrong before? 😛

Largely as Mr Adams said, good but not their best work. And the trilogy may well be the most famous pieces of DA's Gong, but lets not forget the earlier stuff. Camembert Electrique has always been my go to Gong album. And if you get to it you may find it an even bigger challenge than this, but very rewarding. Partic side 1, ha. Glissando guitar, used heavily by Allen and Hillage. I love the Canterbury scene. Lyrics are slice of life and sometimes silly. However, in the case of Gong and Daevid Allen, he was communicating Eastern philosophies beneath the silliness and mythology.
Gong always had a great rhythm section. Such funky bass playing. Mike Howlett is also a great bass player (listen to "You" and "Shamal").
This album finally has had a decent remastering on CD. Prior releases sounded terrible.
"You" is the best album of the Radio Gnome trilogy.

Some here have said this is the weakest of the Trilogy - I disagree. I know for many Steve Hillage was the main pull and he features very little on this LP but, I have never been much of a fan of guitarists. Daevid Allen’s guitar playing was sometimes god awful (the Soft Machine demo recordings a prime example) but he had a unique style and I found much of his playing very refreshing as he never tried to be flashy like most guitarists are expected to be. I prefer saxophones (I am a sax player) and the song Zero The Hero And The Witch's Spell on this LP features in my view one of the greatest sax solos ever courtesy of Didier Malherbe.

@@relinquishh Yes I imagine we can appreciate space rock without being attracted by weed and other substances, it was a bit second degree on my part ! Actually, I'm more attracted to Shamal, and Pierre Moerlen's Gong albums, which tend more towards Jazz Rock than Space Rock.
