Thank you so much for doing my song, Justin! Actually I think I asked you to do the either the 7” or 12” version so that worked out perfectly. 😊 The album version is lovely but very stripped down and it doesn’t have the upbeat sound that really lifts me up. I saw Paul in concert recently and this song always gets the crowd moving. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Speak like a child,Head start for happiness or long hot summer for me… but I do love this one introducing the style council was a great album .. Paris match with Tracey thorn pre enthusiast was magic
Thanks, JP! This is an all time favorite of mine too! Loved the Style Council, one of the highlights of the 80s. Paul Weller is still at it making good music today.
A poptastic song from Paul Weller. Has he ever really bettered this song? I'd wager not. All the versions of this song are top tier. One of the best summer songs written. Can definitely hear the Isley Brothers influence throughout this track.
Oh lovely! The vocal and piano album version is also wonderful. Mick is great pianist but also Weller's voice has really developed by this point. Also one of his best lyrics.
@@andkat That’s how I discovered them, too. TSC then The Jam and then followed Paul’s solo career. It’s great that he still plays songs from all of them at his concerts.
I don’t know many songs from the Style Council, I didn’t know this one. So please forgive me for saying this, but on first hearing this really reminds me of the Culture Club. I hear elements of Time (clock of the heart) in it, and perhaps of It’s a Miracle and Karma Chameleon. Music from the same era of course.
Congratulations Justin ! You got it exactly right. This (IMO) is the definitive version of the track. One of my favorite bands of the 80's. Cheers and thanks to falcongal. I don't know if I could pick just one favorite song of mine, but I can perfectly relate to this being hers.
Love this song so much, but... "How She Threw It All Away" has a wicked flute solo by Dick Morrissey, who plays the sax in the "Start" intro to album version of Peter Gabriel's "I Don't Remember", and the "Love Song" from the Bladerunner soundtrack. Also, that drummer is Steve White, brother of the Oasis drummer Alan White. He also played on Paul Weller's early solo work, and he plays it TIGHT, with a trad grip, so nimble.
Hi JP. DP from UK. Paul Weller moving on from The Jam to The Style Council - it was like Living In Another World. And it was a world I much preferred. The version you played was just fine by me. I bought quite a few 12" singles around this time. P.S. my song ref Living In Another World is by Talk Talk. It features on keys Steve Winwood, a big influence on Weller, especially in his later solo period.
TSC were a phenomenal outlet for a particular element of PWeller's WIDE taste and musical ability... so beautiful... it's a real shame that not many folks in North America picked up on his genius... oh well, their loss... timeless music IMO.
In my opinion, the version with piano and guitar only, is the best. Jazzy, but not jazz. Just the mood. This is different. Still good, but not the same.
That's the right version, no doubt about it. The single version is the same, with a earlier fadeout. And the album version has a down tempo, that fits perfectly to the album general tone, but not works well at its own. If you wanna do the album bersion, I recommend to listen the entire thing. It's a great album. Not so good as their second (which I hope you revisit some day), but a very good one.
Good choice - 99% of the time the album cut is the way to go. I’m familiar with this song but I’m sure it wasn’t the version you described. Many extended versions are just a bunch of added mixing crap, but this was good, very close to the version I know.
Hi Justin. Another excellent video. I would like to suggest the song Rose of Sharon from Camel's album Dust and dreams. She has one of Andrew Latmer's most beautiful solos
What always baffled me was this: Paul Weller broke up the Jam at the peak of their popularity so that they went out on a high (which was in many ways a prescient and admirable choice, much like Fripp breaking up King Crimson in '74), but then he went on to form this pile of cack instead.
@@paulcollins5586 desperate, and also Style Council had all the shallow and commercial pop clichés in a neat row. It's like he thought, "Ok I'm gonna make an authoritarian decision that pisses off my band mates 'cause I have almost all the songwriting royalties and they need to gig for a living, then form a new band that'll make anyone with taste hate me until the mid 90s."

@@falcongal63 The Style Council is one of my all-time fave groups! Great taste!
Heard Style Council at the Roskilde Festival back in 1985, one of few bands who could perform in broad daylight and create a mood.
Well done! That's the version to pick. What a song, what a band, what an artist Paul Weller is.
I was a little surprised to read that this was Paul Weller's biggest hit in the US reaching #29 on the Billboard Top 100.
The Modfather just could not miss. Really an amazing career, The Jam, The Style Councyl, then solo, and all great!
This and another of their hits "Have You Ever Had It Blue" are wonderfully retro bangers.
The piano solo version on their "Cafe Bleu" album is haunting.
Just not as good as the more uptempo single version
My favourite is ‘Headstart to happiness’ which is a really uplifting tune 😊
A very very close second for me. A brilliant song!
Yeah, that's a banger too.
Speak like a child,Head start for happiness or long hot summer for me… but I do love this one introducing the style council was a great album .. Paris match with Tracey thorn pre enthusiast was magic
love paul weller and the style council! my favourite by them - "walls come tumbling down". i think you'd really dig it too, jp. thanks! ❤️
Best version, well done.
Weller’s politics in The Style Council became even stronger than they were with The Jam.
Thanks, JP! This is an all time favorite of mine too! Loved the Style Council, one of the highlights of the 80s. Paul Weller is still at it making good music today.
Glad you enjoyed it SB :)

The single version of MECM is a Steve White drumming tour de force. Takes me back to carefree NYC summers in the early 80s while I was in college.
This is definitely the best version! I only recently heard the original, piano only version and I thought it must be a demo.
Terrific track … forever on most of the 80’s playlists I’ve ever made.
Paul Weller's solo stuff is very good - like Aim High, The Soul Searchers, Wild Wood (Sheared Wood Remix) [Paul Weller Vs. Portishead]
Oh...yes...love this song! ❤
Love this song man
Love a bit of white boy soul. 😎
@Owlstretchingtime78 indeed!!some ambrosia simply red anytime for sure 👌
A most excellent song!
I discovered The Jam via TSC. Love this record!

Bought this single at the time, sort of happy get up and go type sound, very smooth. You almost forgot this was the same guy from The Jam.

I was a teen/20s aged person in the 80s, but I have no knowledge of this band. Great song! I'm going to find other songs by them! Great review!

I love this song. Is the best version
Good call jp 2:05
Weller is life.

You listened to the best version.
Ca-caa? I suppose there aren't falcons in your hood.
I'm pretty sure the opening verse is to do with an oncoming nuclear attack
Listen to Peter Wilson Bass it reminds me of paul mccartney
Kick out the style, bring back the Jam
My mood never changes when it comes to the Style Council. 😐
I like the jam but never liked this band. Sounds like wham , very bland.
Same here! The only song by The Style Council that I quite like is "Internationalists" but that's about it.
What always baffled me was this: Paul Weller broke up the Jam at the peak of their popularity so that they went out on a high (which was in many ways a prescient and admirable choice, much like Fripp breaking up King Crimson in '74), but then he went on to form this pile of cack instead.
@@pentagrammaton6793 Well put. Think the jam could have done a few more great albuns . Thats music. This sounds desperate.
