Saw them on the "Slow Flux" tour in the early 70's. A great concert with most original band members. They played a 20 plus version of "Monster" that brought down the house!
In '77, a bunch of us went to Milwaukee to see Steppenwolf. We were all pretty psyched. The show opened with the band coming out and doing an instrumental that I didn't recognize, but was pretty good and got a good crowd reception. Immediately after the song was over, they went into another song (I don't remember what it was) and some skinny dude with long curly hair and silk pants, a silk shirt, and a silk sash around his waist came out, dancing like a poor man's Mick Jagger. This was definately NOT John Kay. Right away people began yelling for John Kay. Unfortunately, all we got was Mr. Pretty Boy in his ridiculous silk outfit. At one point they played "For Ladies Only". At least Goldy McJohn (along with bassist Nick St. Nicholas) were in this lineup. And when Goldy's solo came in "For Ladies Only", it was truly amazing to hear. He played it on a Hammond rather than a piano, but they didn't matter. When he concluded, I gave him a standing ovation, as did a lot of other people. That was the only time I clapped during the entire show, except for the opening instrumental, before we realized that John Kay wasn't going to be coming out. My girlfriend, one of my buddies and me went back to Milwaukee the next year to see what was advertised as John Kay & Steppenwolf. John Kay was actually the vocalist. He was the only "original" member of the band on stage, but that was good enough for all of us there. They were sooo good! At one point John introduced a new song, dedicating it to a bogus Steppenwolf that had been playing around. The song was called "Five Finger Discount". I wasn't the only person in the crowd to stand up and cheer for this. There were obviously others there that had been duped like me and my little group had been. LMAO!
Its so awesome that youre hitting a bunch of viewers' favourite songs! Glad to discover stuff like this that you may have not listened to otherwise (my first time hearing it as well).
Wow wow WOW!!! Thank you Michael for recognizing what a great tune this is. I'm 57, my dad had quite the album collection and this was in it. I have this CD. This is 1 of my all time favorite tunes, can never listen to it just once!!! Thank you for the reaction. 👏❤
Great song, but I couldn't listen. Because I'm obedient and read the label! (Chuckle, chuckle!). Fun fact, John Kay and a terrible excuse for Steppenwolf, put on the worst show I have ever attended. But what the Hell, it's only Rock & Roll, we smoked some hash, drank some beer and it was " all right, all right, all right"!✌^❤
Yeah, could have cut out those vocal sections and I would have been happy with the result. Rather sub-par compared to the instrumental sections, which really held my interest.
Okey bluesy, rock to start/finish. But I thought the overly long, and imho unremarkable piano/keys, break was rather gratuitious. Just seemed like padding. From the blurb you viewed, seemed like they were looking to lean into prog, and as we know, what better way to show your potential prog credentials than with a ten minuter...
First time I heard this longer version. Thanks.

Cool band. John Kaye wrote some great lyrics.
Great selection, thanks
Happily!
For me there were three Steppenwolf songs: "Born to be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride" and "The Pusher". I had never heard this song until today.

Glad you enjoyed it Boop! Ty for watching :D
You want a Steppenwolf long track? Monster. Studio version.
I agree with you about the piano. I was half busy with other stuff to begin with, but the piano made me listen.
With that S typo I thought it was a Steeleye Span song coming...
Here's a suggestion, but only because I heard it in a recent film: Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar. It kicks ass.
Not a bad song, I like long compositions, organ, piano impressed, good vocals. Not bad, now few people perform such music.
Steppenwolf went prog. Wish they'd stayed together after this.
Good review jp as always. 👍
This album was not a critical or commercial success. But it has a quirky charm that makes it one of my favorites of theirs.

Wow, too bad. I saw them at a smaller venue in the late 80s, I think it was, & they were fantastic.

One hit band. Nothing special.
Very wrong. They had many hits.
