    If you are on a budget, trash cans make great pots. Have to add drainage holes yourself, which is easier with the plastic kind, but can get a masonry bit to drill through ceramic, etc.
    I use bathroom trash cans a lot for bigger plants. They are often really cute, too!

    Yes, caring for big plants 🌿💕🌵 🌱 is expensive, but indeed so worth it 😉

      I don’t mind spending the money on the plant, it’s the pot price that always get me 😩

    How big was pot you took it out of? And where did you get smaller pots?

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet

      I think it was like an 8in orchid pot and I get them from RepotMe. Sometimes RepotMe has links on Amazon.

    Looks like you should give it a bigger pole now before it gets bigger

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can extend the pole when the time comes! I have the gardening mesh and zip ties handy whenever I need them. Ran out of daylight for patio projects ✨

      @milkymoonmama369 ปีที่แล้ว

      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet do you find that is sturdy? Whenever I try to attach these kinds they fall over

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It helps to have a pot that’s perfect straight up and down and put the pole all the way to the bottom. I’ve generally had decent results that way. Angled or curved pots make that way harder.

      Also the gardening mesh I have is like a really stiff plastic. I have to cut it with shears. I’m sure that’s part of it.

    To save money on soil i buy everything to make my own.

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I buy everything to mix it myself but it adds up quick! Especially when you start getting bigger plants and they need a ton of substrate. Inflation is crazy.

    Better idea to use a big cheap nursery pot and insert it in a pretty cache pot.

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I disagree. Once plants get top heavy enough, they will still lean a lot in a plastic pot in a cache pot and potentially even fall over. Being planted in the heavy pot helps anchor them down better, especially when you have to start extending the pole. Plus the plastic will retain water more than the terracotta. For my large plants, this has been the most successful method in my conditions. Awesome if you’ve had success another way though!

      Terracotta is the only appropriate pot type to use with airoids if you aren't using a cache pot. For my big plants if I use a liner pot I have to find a pretty pot that fits the liner pot very snug so it doesn't lean or fall. Or I secure my moss pole to an actual wall otherwise. Terracotta works because it absorbs excess moisture and helps prevent over watering and its heavy enough to hold large plants.

    Im just starting with big plants. What kind of pot do you need? What makes it so expensive? I thought i could use one that i hVe already found. BTW it looks fabulous!

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This one was expensive because it’s ceramic and I wanted something very specific, but if you’re less picky or ok with using plastic you can find cheaper options. I also ordered it online. I just like to keep my variegated monsteras in terracotta.

    How big is the pot

  • @jamestheshameless2275
    @jamestheshameless2275 ปีที่แล้ว

    90 dollars for a pot and the mix is expensive? Like why? The mix keeps water from collecting on the leaves and helping them brown? Didn't understand that part either.

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Helping them to not brown. A well draining substrate prevents the plant from sucking up too much water, causing it to accumulate inside the leaves and result in edema, which kills the variegated tissue really quickly and leads to premature browning.
      The pot was expensive because I wanted something very specific and I got it online so I had to just pay what it cost or find an alternative. The straight cylinder shape helps the pole lean less and I wanted something heavy since the plant is quite tall and ceramic pots can be really expensive once you start getting over about a 6 inch size.
      Big plants are just expensive to take care of in general, large pots are expensive, more substrate is expensive, more fertilizer, more materials for poles, stakes, more powerful grow lights if you need them. It all adds up but I wasn’t something I was expecting when I got a lot of these plants when they were really small. Continually upsizing everything costs way more than the plants themselves. Just wanted to highlight that for folks to are super budget conscious.

    what is that pole?

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I made it out of gardening mesh and zip ties. I just put my chunky mix and some extra sphagnum moss inside of it.

      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet I wasn't intending to be rude, I just wanted to make sure you realized. It'll get huge as it roots into that pole and its crazy making a pole repotting a plant and seeing how big it is hahaha awesome job though

      I also have a lot of plants in terracotta and my potting mix is extra well draining to accommodate and with my watering regiment and climate this works really well for me. Thanks for looking out though!
