Todays NFL is an inferior product compared to this. Defense is almost outlawed and free agency and the cap make it all but impossible to have the great teams like the ones playing here.
Chocolateboyxxx The biggest change is free agency and a hard salary cap. It makes it very difficult to keep a great team together, year by year. When a team wins a championship now, the players want a big raise, and you just cannot retain all of your great players. Three teams dominated the 1980’s: The 49ers, The Giants, and the Redskins. Chicago had a very good team then, but never repeated their success, likely due to the departure of Buddy Ryan.
I forgot how good Wendell Tyler truly was but you could see that Roger Craig is the perfect prototype for running backs in the future. RC33 should be in the HOF.

There's a interesting observation about the NFL Hall of Fame... Gale Sayers gets in because of his great couple of seasons before he had a severe knee injury. Even after the injury and surgery Gale still played at a fairly high level. Though he was not the same player he was prior to the injury. He gets into the Hall of Fame based upon a rather short period of great play. Which I agree with whole heartedly. However... A player like Sterling Sharpe has never been given the same respect. He was a tremendous player and could have possibly been the 2nd best receiver behind Jerry Rice for many years... However a severe neck injury cut his career short by a large amount. I think that Roger Craig falls into a similar circumstance... A really good player for several seasons. He just got beat up A LOT and that cut his productivity down quite a bit. Yet at his physical peak Roger was a tremendous player. He does not get the same respect that Gale received either. And running backs have a hard road to get into the Hall of Fame... Warrick Dunn likely will not get in either... He had 10,000 plus yards rushing and I believe he had 5,000 yards plus receiving... And yet I really wonder if he will get in. Being a wide receiver or running back is tough getting into the Hall of Fame. Has it should be to a degree... However players like Warrick Dunn, Roger Craig or Sterling Sharpe should be considered much more seriously than they are.
I still say its the best team ever. Yes, better than the 85 bears and yes better than the 72 dolphins. This team was super good on both sides of the ball.
Ridiculous and unfair, one of the greatest teams ever, arguably THE greatest...and picked up the greatest player ever the next year..ppl forget how amazing the NFC was in 80s...Bears were great every year, Giants, then later Eagles, Redskins amazing every couple years...so 49ers to win 4 SBs in that era is like 6 any other...
Devin Jerry Jerry was all Steve Young had after Ricky Waters left. That’s why Jerry’s stats went up. I think Joe had more weapons. From what I saw, Jerry’s after the catch was deadly when Joe was his qb. With Steve, Jerry took more hits. Catching from a left handed qb presented some challenges for Jerry.

Position by position the 94 team was probably the best. It was the team that caused the NFL to create a salary cap, lol. Young was no Joe and needed the most stacked team ever assembled to win ONE ring as starter.
Was definitely the best Niner t eam ever, as a giants fan; I remember how everyone thought Marino would have a great game against them in the SB, because of the year he had, but Niners defense was very good, and underrated
I was 9 years old and lived up the hill from Candlestick Park as a kid. The atmosphere during the Niner games used to be ELECTRIC. Theres a play in this game when Joe peels off like a 50+ yard run and the crowd went APESHIT. You could FEEL the Roar from my house Lol THIS WAS AWESOME.GO NINERS CANDLESTICK MAGIC FOREVER!!!
If not for the Giants SF would have about 8 trophies. If not for SF the Giants could have 6. Plus the Skins were a dynasty level team then to. The 1980s/90s NFC was insane.

I agree wholeheartedly. Back in those days your career could be easily cut short by injuries, and Montana certainly had his share of them. Add in the concussions, and it's no wonder why so many retired players are a little messed up in their older age. I always thought Montana was a little small compared to most other quarterbacks, and definitely compared to the guys coming in to sack him. There seems to be a culture for injuring players in the defenses of those days. Force out the star player and you win, but it's so very dirty. Glad we have more rules now.
1. Brady (who I actually liked) woulda pooped himself if Lawrence Taylor came at him unblocked, back in the day. I think LT actually broke Joe’s back one year. Some Giant did. 2. Montana benefitted greatly from a ferocious defense that went largely under appreciated, Lott and Haley especially. 3. Why isn’t Roger Craig in the HoF? He belongs there.
Also the difference in competition within Montana's NFC vs Brady's AFC is night & day. From 1981 to 1998 the NFC won all but 2 superbowls. Montana's 49ers were competing with other dynasties like the Giants & Redskins every year while Brady has played in a pathetic division & a conference that never has more than 1 team that's a threat his whole career.

It was a 15 year span of God level teams. Along with their 5 Superbowl title teams the 49ers went 14-2 in 1987, 1990, & 1992 but lost in the playoffs. The 1986 Bears went 14-2. Redskins went 14-2 in 83 & 91. Then there's the Cowboys dynasty, Marino's 14-2 Dolphins in 84 & Elways 4x Superbowl losing Broncos. A murderers row never before or since seen.

John Madden at his very best at 2:06:02 calling the scuffle between Lawrence Taylor and John Frank. It's what we miss about the 80s football. No condescending commentary, just an old coach who saw two men who are in the heat of battle and called it like a wrestling match!
I agree. madden and summerall were the best. these days the announcers are too overstated when they dont need to be. For example the new play by play guy for MNF. hes so obnoxious. The guy gets way too excited over a routine 10 yard pass in the first quarter. guys like summerall were masters and picked the right spots to alter their tone and raise their voices. I notice it in more in the new play by play announcers and its very annoying.
Maddon was so funny and very authentic when it came to stuff like this. Love and miss the guy. Had me laughing out loud. Remember when he used to draw circles around the turkey on Thanksgiving?
Nobody was beating this 49ers team. That 84 team was on a mission for redemption after losing to the Redskins in the Championship game the previous year. The combination of Walsh's brilliant coaching mixed with all that talent and it was game over. One of the great all time super bowl teams ever.
And in these dim dark days, watching the surgical precision of this team makes me realize how utterly spoiled Niner fans were. We sure could use one of those Hall of Famers today.

Not to mention the Crabtree hold at the end. Or 2014 in the NFCCG vs Sea where the refs just straight up went ham on us & accounted for 17 points difference for Sea in a 6 point game. There were at least 6 calls in that game as bad as the no call that cost the Saints last year, all in favor of Sea. We would have 7-10 trophies if not for zebra rape.
Dwaight Clark was huge for the 49ers from 1980-1987. And even more impressive, from 1980-1983 when he averaged 83 catches for 1,080 yards and seven tds over that four year period. Over a longer stretch, from ‘80-‘86 he still managed 71 catches and 950 yards per year despite injuries. But it was his big playoff performances that we all remember. The ‘81 playoffs he goes off for 104 yds on five catches vs NYG and then grabs 8 for 120 over Dallas in the famous “Catch” game. In 1984 he catches 9 for 124 yards and a TD vs NYG and then 6 for 77 in the SB win over Miami. In a loss to the Giants in ‘85, he again had over 100 yards when he caught 8 for 120. If he had not missed the ‘83 playoffs due to a leg injury, the 49ers likely would have beaten Washington and returned to the SB to face the Raiders. Regardless, he was just as much the key to the 49ers domination of the 1980s as Montana or Lott, or Cross, or Wright or any other. Plus he was the perfect teammate to work with a rookie named Jerry a Rice in 1985 and the two of them were huge that year and again in ‘86 until Clark succumbed to injuries throughout the 1987 year. Most of all though, its a shame he wasn’t healthy enough to return and play in the 1988 season and secure his 3rd SB win as a player.

Because of a 4 hour game between the 49ers and the Redskins in the late 80's the NFL took measures to speed up the game. Although I can't remember exactly what the NFL did! LOL!!
They met a lot in the playoffs throughout the 80’s . They met once in 1990 playoffs. Joe Montana’s last game as a 49er starting quarterback. Took a vicious hit in that game.

As a kid, I was a AFC fan. The 80’s belonged to the NFC. It was high level football by the top teams especially. Defense, offensive, coaches, stars all over the place, physically superior also.
The Giants would go on to win the next 3 playoff meetings with The 49ers (1985, 1986, & 1990) they were the only team to beat Montana 3 times in the playoffs.
Montana went 9-4 vs the Giants from 80-90. & NYonly holds a 3-2 playoff lead. Whenever Giants fans squawk about their mythical dominance of the 1980s 49ers it always makes me laugh.

Awesome, thanks for uploading this. By far the best NFL rivalry of the 1980s, so many classic matchups. Six out of ten Super Bowls from 1981 to 1990 were won by these two. Love the fact that almost every pass play from this game would result in a 15 yard 'roughing the passer' penalty in the modern day.

Man the Giants and 49ers played some tough games in the late 80s and early 90s. Great stuff, sad we will never see great teams like these again because of free agency.
Montana threw 3 interceptions in this game and the Giants dropped what should have been two more easy interceptions. So Montana came within a whisker of throwing a career worst 5 interceptions in this game. That's unreal. Unbelievable. Nevertheless, Montana also threw 3 touchdown passes and had a preposterous 53 yard run (Steve Young's longest run ever as a 49er was a 49 yard run).
If not for the losses to the giants in 85,86,and 90 they may have had 3 more rings. No wonder they didn't want the giants in the playoffs in 88 and laid down that last game of the regular season to the rams knocking the giants out of a playoff spot. But the giants have their selves to blame for losing to the jets earlier that day

We were at this game. Section 9, upper box, south end zone. The only playoff game I've ever attended. This is the first time I've seen this telecast! I remember the game started so well for us, we thought it would be a blowout. It sure wasn't. A defensive struggle for 3 quarters. But the 49er defense allowed only one offensive touchdown in the entire postseason. As well-balanced a football team as has ever been assembled.
The Giants defense played really well this game. It's just that their offense was so putrid against the 49ers defense, they couldn't do the heavy lifting by themselves the entire contest.

Montana played less than 12 seasons if were factoring in games that he started 12 seasons would be 192 games and he started about 154 of them Brady’s first 12 seasons not counting 08 since he was hurt the entire season Montana has 16-7 postseason record 4-0 in SB’s averaged 285 yards per game in those SB’s with 11 TDS 0 INTS 3 SB MVPS 2 league MVPS. Brady 17-7 postseason record 3-2 in SBS averaging 255 yards per game in those 5 SB’s with 9 TDS 2 INTS 2 SB MVPS 3 League MVPS.

Thanks for a fantastic quality upload of a great game I remember watching back in the 80s. Such a pity all 49ers Super Bowl games on TH-cam are such poor quality video. Wish someone would upscale and upload them.
Some ignorant people say that ALL old games look bad in terms of video quality. But actually it if you had good quality AV equipment for recording, the quality was pretty good. Still, first generation broadcast masters look the best. The NFL's TH-cam channel has the entire 1990 Superbowl uploaded and it clearly was sourced from the TV broadcast master tapes.
Surprising plays: 1:23:45, Montana runs for 53 yards (longest of his career). Two plays later, he blindly throws an interception and during the return Lawrence Taylor hits Montana and ends up getting hurt himself.
I watched Brock Purdy beat the Seahawks today but watching this game I am just struck by Montana’s calm no fear no stress just cool execution of pass plays
Of course Montana was in his fifth year by the time this game occurred, Brock shows the signs of the same. when Brock finally wins a Super Bowl he and Montana may be mentioned in the same breath?
For all those who believe Montana was only Great because of Jerry Rice, please note that Jerry Rice was an undrafted college player during this game and was NOT a 49er. Joe Montana. The best there ever was.
He's the 2nd best. Staubach was better. But that's not an insult to say Joe's the only other QB I'd even mention in the discussion. Roger had to play when DBs could maul receivers all over the field. He took a team that had Doug Dennison as the starting HB, and Newhouse and Preston Pearson as the others in the backfield. That '75 team had 12 rookies on it, and dang near beat the Steelers in the SB. Montana never had to play a team like that in the Big Game. That said, if I was a 49er fan, I'd think Montana was the best ever, too. Peace
Matt Cavanaugh went 2-0 with this team in '84-'85. This was a good team, with or without Joe. They were great with him, and they finally went back-to-back in 88-89. After that 1989 season is when I finally conceded that Joe belonged in the conversation with Staubach.

You could see Giants were coming. 49ers were winning it in '84. Bears were winning it in '85. And Giants were winning it in '86. 1987 was first year it was up for grabs somewhat and Redskins upset Chicago on road(ending Walter Payton's career👎) and then went on to take it. One of best arguments for Joe Gibbs as an elite elite coach is the years there wasn't a 'for sure thing' 82,87 then beating Buffalo in early 90s the Skins stepped up and won the thing. Also, don't you just love that old theme music from CBS' NFL Coverage? God, why don't they go back to that FFS.
About three quarters of these hits on the QB's today would be penalties. Same with hits in the secondary. I do understand the head injury deal but they have put dresses on the QB's today.
@@durtyragoux , During my twenties thru thirties when one recovered rapidly, I'd have zero problem. I played QB and SS from the age of six until I was twenty-one and would have loved the fact that when I was scrambling if I began to slide, no one could hit me. Or drag me down by my shoulder pads and/or horse collar. Couldn't get hit in the upper torso to head region, etc. That and the twenty-one years, seven months and thirteen days I spent in the Marine Corps, I don't see any problem being a QB in todays game.
@@Devildog0166 maybe you take concussions better than others, or haven't had as many severe ones. QBs still pay the price, dress or no dress. Pro football is still a rough sport, even for marines. It would be nice to somehow see less dangerous injuries, and fewer concussions, but that's not happening, so someones still doing some serious hitting.
@@durtyragoux , I can tell you're under thirty for two reasons. First, you never saw in real time all the hits QB's took back in the day. And I mean play after play after play and not one hit here and another one there on a highlight real. Secondly, there's nothing and I mean not one thing done on a grid iron that compares to having your ass shot at and/or attempted to be blown up by others that have a strong dislike for you. I laugh every time I hear some player say, "It's a war out there!", "It's a fight to the death!", "It's like combat!", etc. I would go out on a field wearing zero pads and feel safer than I did in every fire fight I participated in. At least then one knows what to expect along with when and where it will be coming from with the bonus being, nothings exploding around you. They have no clue! And I even had head and position coaches feed me those lines in both high school and college. Not knowing any different at the time, I did go back later after being educated on multiple occasions concerning the subject and point out how ignorant those comments were. As far as I know they've all dropped that part of their motivational spews.

I can say that comparing the injuries between those from war and football is inane, as the horrors of one cannot outweigh the effects from the other.. I also can say that players continue to be crippled by the sport, mentally and physically, as was the case when I was a kid watching Joe Namath and Terry Bradshaw, and Stabler, and Plunkett.. That hit that Montana took in the Super Bowl against the Giants would still be legal today, and it wasn't even to the Head and no amount of War could ever change the effects that come from these devastating blows which you and I love to watch except you take exception to football being compared to war and now you want to say they're just a bunch of pansies, but not everybody Compares football to war so you know you shouldn't feel such animus for people because they're pro football players who make a s*** ton of money. I'm sure the average fan as well as football players understands the difference between playing sport like football and going to war. Hopefully that applies to people under 30 as well.
No disrespect to Brady but it's not fair to compare his rings to Montana's because the game is different today. Look at 1:00:05. You don't know how many more wins Montana could have had in his career if he had been afforded the same protections. Don't forget he retired because his body was battered. On the other hand, Brady will most likely retire a healthy man.

the giants were starting to get really good under parcells in 84. in 85 they were probably the second best team in the NFL after the bears and in 86 they had the best team in their franchise history and won it all.
2nd best team in nfl in 85 is a bit of stretch. Rams Dolphins Pats Raiders were all probably just as good and likely better. They probably were just about dead even with the 9ers, maybe slightly better but very close.
I think the Bears would have repeated if not for Mcmahon's injury. They resembled the 85 team when he played in 86. They even were beating Washington in the second half with Flutie ffs!
Watching today in anticipation of the first preseason game between the Niners and the Cowboys (saw the 1982 NFC Championship game between the 49ers and the Cowboys last night). A rare sighting on Renaldo Nehemiah, a world record holder in track. Bill Walsh, wanting to add a speedster in his receiving corp, drafted Nehemiah, the next season after his Niners won Super Bowl XXVI. Nehemiah didn't reach his potential in the NFL, as he wasn't great at catching the ball. The defense couldn't keep up with him or sometimes had to double team him, so in a way, he made his teammates open.

Wow! I vaguely remember this game. Montana didn’t have a great game. They did enough to win. That Giants defense was no joke! The Niners D is what got them the win.
Yep, Belichick defense. Belichick owned Joe in the playoffs after the first half of this game. The last 14 quarters of playoff ball Montana vs Belichick defenses, Joe literally got one TD and that was a gamble by Everson Walls. Montana was 0-3 vs Belichick defenses in the playoffs after this game. Joe got knocked outta two playoff games vs Belichick defenses that almost ended his career both times. The reason Tom Brady was great is he practiced vs Bill Belichick defenses everyday. Montana was great, but he had some weaknesses that Belichick exposed.
The football from this era is so much more entertaining. If you passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns, you really did something back then.

Chocolateboyxxx The biggest change is free agency and a hard salary cap. It makes it very difficult to keep a great team together, year by year. When a team wins a championship now, the players want a big raise, and you just cannot retain all of your great players. Three teams dominated the 1980’s: The 49ers, The Giants, and the Redskins. Chicago had a very good team then, but never repeated their success, likely due to the departure of Buddy Ryan.

There's a interesting observation about the NFL Hall of Fame... Gale Sayers gets in because of his great couple of seasons before he had a severe knee injury. Even after the injury and surgery Gale still played at a fairly high level. Though he was not the same player he was prior to the injury. He gets into the Hall of Fame based upon a rather short period of great play. Which I agree with whole heartedly. However... A player like Sterling Sharpe has never been given the same respect. He was a tremendous player and could have possibly been the 2nd best receiver behind Jerry Rice for many years... However a severe neck injury cut his career short by a large amount.
I think that Roger Craig falls into a similar circumstance... A really good player for several seasons. He just got beat up A LOT and that cut his productivity down quite a bit. Yet at his physical peak Roger was a tremendous player. He does not get the same respect that Gale received either.
And running backs have a hard road to get into the Hall of Fame... Warrick Dunn likely will not get in either... He had 10,000 plus yards rushing and I believe he had 5,000 yards plus receiving... And yet I really wonder if he will get in. Being a wide receiver or running back is tough getting into the Hall of Fame. Has it should be to a degree... However players like Warrick Dunn, Roger Craig or Sterling Sharpe should be considered much more seriously than they are.

I still say its the best team ever. Yes, better than the 85 bears and yes better than the 72 dolphins. This team was super good on both sides of the ball.

Jerry was all Steve Young had after Ricky Waters left. That’s why Jerry’s stats went up. I think Joe had more weapons. From what I saw, Jerry’s after the catch was deadly when Joe was his qb. With Steve, Jerry took more hits. Catching from a left handed qb presented some challenges for Jerry.

I agree wholeheartedly. Back in those days your career could be easily cut short by injuries, and Montana certainly had his share of them. Add in the concussions, and it's no wonder why so many retired players are a little messed up in their older age.
I always thought Montana was a little small compared to most other quarterbacks, and definitely compared to the guys coming in to sack him. There seems to be a culture for injuring players in the defenses of those days. Force out the star player and you win, but it's so very dirty. Glad we have more rules now.

2. Montana benefitted greatly from a ferocious defense that went largely under appreciated, Lott and Haley especially.

Also the difference in competition within Montana's NFC vs Brady's AFC is night & day. From 1981 to 1998 the NFC won all but 2 superbowls. Montana's 49ers were competing with other dynasties like the Giants & Redskins every year while Brady has played in a pathetic division
& a conference that never has more than 1 team that's a threat his whole career.

It was a 15 year span of God level teams. Along with their 5 Superbowl title teams the 49ers went 14-2 in 1987, 1990, & 1992 but lost in the playoffs. The 1986 Bears went 14-2. Redskins went 14-2 in 83 & 91. Then there's the Cowboys dynasty, Marino's 14-2 Dolphins in 84 & Elways 4x Superbowl losing Broncos. A murderers row never before or since seen.

John Madden at his very best at 2:06:02 calling the scuffle between Lawrence Taylor and John Frank. It's what we miss about the 80s football. No condescending commentary, just an old coach who saw two men who are in the heat of battle and called it like a wrestling match!
I agree. madden and summerall were the best. these days the announcers are too overstated when they dont need to be. For example the new play by play guy for MNF. hes so obnoxious. The guy gets way too excited over a routine 10 yard pass in the first quarter. guys like summerall were masters and picked the right spots to alter their tone and raise their voices. I notice it in more in the new play by play announcers and its very annoying.

Nobody was beating this 49ers team. That 84 team was on a mission for redemption after losing to the Redskins in the Championship game the previous year. The combination of Walsh's brilliant coaching mixed with all that talent and it was game over. One of the great all time super bowl teams ever.
And in these dim dark days, watching the surgical precision of this team makes me realize how utterly spoiled Niner fans were. We sure could use one of those Hall of Famers today.

There were at least 6 calls in that game as bad as the no call that cost the Saints last year, all in favor of Sea. We would have 7-10 trophies if not for zebra rape.
Dwaight Clark was huge for the 49ers from 1980-1987. And even more impressive, from 1980-1983 when he averaged 83 catches for 1,080 yards and seven tds over that four year period. Over a longer stretch, from ‘80-‘86 he still managed 71 catches and 950 yards per year despite injuries. But it was his big playoff performances that we all remember. The ‘81 playoffs he goes off for 104 yds on five catches vs NYG and then grabs 8 for 120 over Dallas in the famous “Catch” game. In 1984 he catches 9 for 124 yards and a TD vs NYG and then 6 for 77 in the SB win over Miami. In a loss to the Giants in ‘85, he again had over 100 yards when he caught 8 for 120. If he had not missed the ‘83 playoffs due to a leg injury, the 49ers likely would have beaten Washington and returned to the SB to face the Raiders. Regardless, he was just as much the key to the 49ers domination of the 1980s as Montana or Lott, or Cross, or Wright or any other. Plus he was the perfect teammate to work with a rookie named Jerry a Rice in 1985 and the two of them were huge that year and again in ‘86 until Clark succumbed to injuries throughout the 1987 year. Most of all though, its a shame he wasn’t healthy enough to return and play in the 1988 season and secure his 3rd SB win as a player.

As a kid, I was a AFC fan. The 80’s belonged to the NFC. It was high level football by the top teams especially. Defense, offensive, coaches, stars all over the place, physically superior also.
The Giants would go on to win the next 3 playoff meetings with The 49ers (1985, 1986, & 1990) they were the only team to beat Montana 3 times in the playoffs.
Montana went 9-4 vs the Giants from 80-90. & NYonly holds a 3-2 playoff lead. Whenever Giants fans squawk about their mythical dominance of the 1980s 49ers it always makes me laugh.

Love the fact that almost every pass play from this game would result in a 15 yard 'roughing the passer' penalty in the modern day.
Cowboys vs Redskins rivalry during the 70's and 80's was probably the best NFL rivalry. This one was good too with SF and NYG.

Montana threw 3 interceptions in this game and the Giants dropped what should have been two more easy interceptions. So Montana came within a whisker of throwing a career worst 5 interceptions in this game.
That's unreal. Unbelievable. Nevertheless, Montana also threw 3 touchdown passes and had a preposterous 53 yard run (Steve Young's longest run ever as a 49er was a 49 yard run).

If not for the losses to the giants in 85,86,and 90 they may have had 3 more rings. No wonder they didn't want the giants in the playoffs in 88 and laid down that last game of the regular season to the rams knocking the giants out of a playoff spot. We were at this game. Section 9, upper box, south end zone. The only playoff game I've ever attended. This is the first time I've seen this telecast! I remember the game started so well for us, we thought it would be a blowout. It sure wasn't. A defensive struggle for 3 quarters. But the 49er defense allowed only one offensive touchdown in the entire postseason. As well-balanced a football team as has ever been assembled.
That was a great Niners team. The Giants were still learning how to win but it would not take long to see them reach the pinnacle.

The Giants defense played really well this game. It's just that their offense was so putrid against the 49ers defense, they couldn't do the heavy lifting by themselves the entire contest.

Man. It’s difficult to watch Niner games like this, and then their Super Bowl win 2 weeks later vs the Dolphins, and not give Montana the nod as the GOAT over Brady. Also, I think a lot of people forget what a great scrambler & runner Montana was early in his career. 🙏🏈
If you do a fair comparison Montana is better. Montana played less than 12 seasons if were factoring in games that he started 12 seasons would be 192 games and he started about 154 of them Brady’s first 12 seasons not counting 08 since he was hurt the entire season Montana has 16-7 postseason record 4-0 in SB’s averaged 285 yards per game in those SB’s with 11 TDS 0 INTS 3 SB MVPS 2 league MVPS. Brady 17-7 postseason record 3-2 in SBS averaging 255 yards per game in those 5 SB’s with 9 TDS 2 INTS 2 SB MVPS 3 League MVPS.

@@charlesrussell6305 2. The 1981-1996 NFC won all but 1 Superbowl. Giants Skins, 49ers & Cowboys all had dynasty level teams with multiple Superbowl titles. Plus the 84-86 Bears set a still unbroken record for wins in a 3 year span. I respect the hell out of the 80s Giants, but SF was still king of the hill.

Thanks for a fantastic quality upload of a great game I remember watching back in the 80s. Such a pity all 49ers Super Bowl games on TH-cam are such poor quality video. Wish someone would upscale and upload them.
Some ignorant people say that ALL old games look bad in terms of video quality. But actually it if you had good quality AV equipment for recording, the quality was pretty good. Still, first generation broadcast masters look the best. The NFL's TH-cam channel has the entire 1990 Superbowl uploaded and it clearly was sourced from the TV broadcast master tapes.
Not to mention the fact that QBs we’re being eaten alive by defensive linemen and Linebackers shots to head were acceptable on Quarterbacks
Surprising plays: 1:23:45, Montana runs for 53 yards (longest of his career). Two plays later, he blindly throws an interception and during the return Lawrence Taylor hits Montana and ends up getting hurt himself.
This 49er team seemed so complete and dominant
their 89 team was even better outscored their opponents in the postseason 130-26🤯
I watched Brock Purdy beat the Seahawks today but watching this game I am just struck by Montana’s calm no fear no stress just cool execution of pass plays
Of course Montana was in his fifth year by the time this game occurred, Brock shows the signs of the same. when Brock finally wins a Super Bowl he and Montana may be mentioned in the same breath?

For all those who believe Montana was only Great because of Jerry Rice, please note that Jerry Rice was an undrafted college player during this game and was NOT a 49er. Joe Montana. The best there ever was.
Montana already had 2 Super Bowl rings before Rice got there.

Staubach was better. But that's not an insult to say Joe's the only other QB I'd even mention in the discussion. Roger had to play when DBs could maul receivers all over the field.
He took a team that had Doug Dennison as the starting HB, and Newhouse and Preston Pearson as the others in the backfield. That '75 team had 12 rookies on it, and dang near beat the Steelers in the SB. Montana never had to play a team like that in the Big Game.
That said, if I was a 49er fan, I'd think Montana was the best ever, too.

Matt Cavanaugh went 2-0 with this team in '84-'85. This was a good team, with or without Joe. They were great with him, and they finally went back-to-back in 88-89.
After that 1989 season is when I finally conceded that Joe belonged in the conversation with Staubach.

You could see Giants were coming. 49ers were winning it in '84. Bears were winning it in '85. And Giants were winning it in '86. 1987 was first year it was up for grabs somewhat and Redskins upset Chicago on road(ending Walter Payton's career👎) and then went on to take it. One of best arguments for Joe Gibbs as an elite elite coach is the years there wasn't a 'for sure thing' 82,87 then beating Buffalo in early 90s the Skins stepped up and won the thing.

About three quarters of these hits on the QB's today would be penalties. Same with hits in the secondary.
I do understand the head injury deal but they have put dresses on the QB's today.
I wonder how you'd feel, dress or no dress, after playing one full game as an NFL q.b. in today's game. The hits they still take are devastating.

I played QB and SS from the age of six until I was twenty-one and would have loved the fact that when I was scrambling if I began to slide, no one could hit me.
Or drag me down by my shoulder pads and/or horse collar.
Couldn't get hit in the upper torso to head region, etc.
That and the twenty-one years, seven months and thirteen days I spent in the Marine Corps, I don't see any problem being a QB in todays game.
@@Devildog0166 maybe you take concussions better than others, or haven't had as many severe ones. QBs still pay the price, dress or no dress. Pro football is still a rough sport, even for marines. It would be nice to somehow see less dangerous injuries, and fewer concussions, but that's not happening, so someones still doing some serious hitting.

First, you never saw in real time all the hits QB's took back in the day. And I mean play after play after play and not one hit here and another one there on a highlight real.
Secondly, there's nothing and I mean not one thing done on a grid iron that compares to having your ass shot at and/or attempted to be blown up by others that have a strong dislike for you.
I laugh every time I hear some player say, "It's a war out there!", "It's a fight to the death!", "It's like combat!", etc.
I would go out on a field wearing zero pads and feel safer than I did in every fire fight I participated in.
At least then one knows what to expect along with when and where it will be coming from with the bonus being, nothings exploding around you.
They have no clue! And I even had head and position coaches feed me those lines in both high school and college.
Not knowing any different at the time, I did go back later after being educated on multiple occasions concerning the subject and point out how ignorant those comments were.
As far as I know they've all dropped that part of their motivational spews.

I can say that comparing the injuries between those from war and football is inane, as the horrors of one cannot outweigh the effects from the other.. I also can say that players continue to be crippled by the sport, mentally and physically, as was the case when I was a kid watching Joe Namath and Terry Bradshaw, and Stabler, and Plunkett.. That hit that Montana took in the Super Bowl against the Giants would still be legal today, and it wasn't even to the Head and no amount of War could ever change the effects that come from these devastating blows which you and I love to watch except you take exception to football being compared to war and now you want to say they're just a bunch of pansies, but not everybody Compares football to war so you know you shouldn't feel such animus for people because they're pro football players who make a s*** ton of money. I'm sure the average fan as well as football players understands the difference between playing sport like football and going to war. Hopefully that applies to people under 30 as well.

No disrespect to Brady but it's not fair to compare his rings to Montana's because the game is different today. Look at 1:00:05. You don't know how many more wins Montana could have had in his career if he had been afforded the same protections. Don't forget he retired because his body was battered. On the other hand, Brady will most likely retire a healthy man.

the giants were starting to get really good under parcells in 84. in 85 they were probably the second best team in the NFL after the bears and in 86 they had the best team in their franchise history and won it all.
2nd best team in nfl in 85 is a bit of stretch. Rams Dolphins Pats Raiders were all probably just as good and likely better. They probably were just about dead even with the 9ers, maybe slightly better but very close.
I think the Bears would have repeated if not for Mcmahon's injury.
They resembled the 85 team when he played in 86.
They even were beating Washington in the second half with Flutie ffs!

Watching today in anticipation of the first preseason game between the Niners and the Cowboys (saw the 1982 NFC Championship game between the 49ers and the Cowboys last night). A rare sighting on Renaldo Nehemiah, a world record holder in track. Bill Walsh, wanting to add a speedster in his receiving corp, drafted Nehemiah, the next season after his Niners won Super Bowl XXVI. Nehemiah didn't reach his potential in the NFL, as he wasn't great at catching the ball. The defense couldn't keep up with him or sometimes had to double team him, so in a way, he made his teammates open.

Wow! I vaguely remember this game. Montana didn’t have a great game. They did enough to win. That Giants defense was no joke! The Niners D is what got them the win.
Yep, Belichick defense. Belichick owned Joe in the playoffs after the first half of this game. The last 14 quarters of playoff ball Montana vs Belichick defenses, Joe literally got one TD and that was a gamble by Everson Walls. Montana was 0-3 vs Belichick defenses in the playoffs after this game. Joe got knocked outta two playoff games vs Belichick defenses that almost ended his career both times. The reason Tom Brady was great is he practiced vs Bill Belichick defenses everyday. Montana was great, but he had some weaknesses that Belichick exposed.
