I can totally empathize. I'm so sick of my shedding that I'm either going to lock it up, or shave it again. I've had a shaved head before, but never 'locks.
I watched this video about a year ago around this time and before that i had no interest of dreadlocks. I don't know why you put such an impression on me but you did. after this video i was fascinated with the idea of dreadlocks and watched all of your other videos. i watched plenty of timeline videos and it was all i thought about. Before when i thought of dreadlocks i thought they were dirty and too messy looking but after researching them i decided i wanted them too. My hair is pretty long and it goes all the way to my waist so i had no problem with hair length. i knew how to make a dreadlock from the twist and rip method since i made one dread in the back underneath that I've had since July so its around 6 months old now. Finally after a whole year and plenty of convincing my mom, I've had twist and rip dreads for 2 months now and i couldn't be more happy with them. i can't wait to see them form over the years :D.
They're doing pretty good :) it will be 4 months in about a week. I'm really starting to get the loops EVERYWHERE :D (p.s fallout 4 is my obsession right now)
That Bethesda Guy lol do it! It's pretty cool that i dont have to do anything with my hair except keep them seperated. You get plenty attention from it though, good and bad.
+That Bethesda Guy im a senior in high school this year and i mostly get complements from others. its funny bc it's always in the bathroom lol. But seriously it shouldnt matter what others think expecially if it means something to you. Is it a crime to have a different hairstyle?
As a fellow dreaded person, I can definitely say you've done a wonderful job with this video. I'm almost 11 months in (neglect method) and I've received a lot of negative comments, especially from those who think dreadlocks aren't for people of my skin colour. But, that's a whole new ball game. Very good video, great advice for newcomers
I was considering dreads, but I only have about six inches of free hair. I'll wait until I have atleast ten. You definitely didn't scare me off them, this is all great information. Cheers.
That's crazy. Def explained the natural process that I was unsure about. I thought I was a weirdo cuz my hair naturally clumps together so well if I just wash and let it dry! Good video! Thanx!
Thank you for this awesome video! It is by far the most informative, and realistic one. I've watched so many of your vieos just last night. I have been contemplating starting dreadlocks for years, and I've finally decided to take the plunge. :D
THANKS SO MUCH MAN ,YOU ANSWERD ALL OF MY QUESTIONS , STARTED MY DREADS 3 MONTHS AGO AND I BEGAN TO WONDER WHY THEY HAD NOT LOCKED YET , I DID NOT KNOW IT TOOK THAT LONG
I have wanted dreads for over a year now and I have s een milions of articles and video's saying it is a lot of work and I still want them. Im prepared to put some more effort into it than regular hair. Next week im going to get them and im so excited about it!
Seriously thank you so much for this video. It was very informal and I really appreciate your honesty throughout it. I'm starting my dreads today and watching this makes me much more comfortable with the whole process. So again, thank you. I hope you're having an amazing day/night.
i love how reactive you are with your viewers, defiantly thinking of getting dreads I just need my hair to grow a bit more (currently at 10 inches long)
@Nikša Glavaš Dreadlocks will always be shorter than the hair you start out with. How much shorter is impossible to say as there are many factors at play, but expect to lose around a 1/3 or so. Also your Google+ settings are set to not allow people from outside your circle to directly reply to your posts.
I've been wanting dreads for almost a year now, and have just now finally convinced my parents to let me get them, which is a shame because if I had put the knots in when I first wanted them they would be almost mature now. But hey, better late than never.
Growing dreadlocks will probably not make the scalp problems any better and it limits your choice of soaps and shampoos. I would try out some dreadlock shampoo options to see how they work out for you. While oils can be added to dreadlocks for various reasons ranging from scent to helping to trap moisture, it's a balance. Oil should only be added if the hair requires it - if you're needing to add oils all the time then you may quickly find the dreadlocks becoming too oily at the roots to lock as they should.
Thank you for all your advice! I watched many of your videos before I decided to start my dreadlocks. Now I finally did it and I'm so happy about them! Thank you for this channel and sharing all your experience :)
I considered getting dreadlocks for years. I'd still love to have them but just don't know if I'm ready for the commitment and time it will take, also, my hair is far too short. I do however watch all your videos for the sheer attractiveness you exude. Cheers!
This has made me re think and I'm now going to just try out some wool roving dreads first as I can't part with my lengths just yet. Thank you for your honest advice as its enabled me to make the best informed decision for my self and wool roving is the way forward for now. Thanks again :) Xx
@Michelle Jores - can't reply to you directly because your google+ settings to not allow replies. The minimum recommend started length isn't to do with shrinkage, it's to do with getting enough knots into the hair. The longer the hair you start with, the more twist and rip or backcomb knots you are able to create. If you have less than 6 inches of hair you really cannot create that many knots which therefore increases the likelihood that they will just wash out.
I just would try to not be that active the first week as that is when they are knotting up and you dont wash your hair as much to encourage the knots. Basically clean hair knots up better.
Thank you for the useful information. I'm on my beginning journey, so this video is much appreciated. You have some pretty amazing dreads...peace, love, and light :)
Love your videos, I made my first few dreadlocks a few days ago and will be doing some more, I love the look of them and can't wait! Thank you for your information :)
I have wanted dreads for probably ten years or longer I just didnt know much about them. Your video is very informative. Thank you! I had no idea that you couldn't have dreads instantly. I had heard that you basically had to wait until it all knotted up But I still assumed there was some way to do it instantly.
Finally someone well informed about the subject.. I nodded all along the video! Well done :) When people ask me about getting dreads I say they're like babies, they need time and patience to grow and prosper :)
@Chelsea Forrester - your Google+ settings do not allow me to directly reply to you. Are you asking about dreading your hair and adding extensions to that, or adding extensions to normal hair?
I didnt see what Chelsea said, but that is my question. I have thin hair, and I saw many things where people start to dread hair, and then add on extensions to that dread. I am VERY puzzled about beggining process because I honeslty do not think that my natural thin straight silky smooth hair would dread well naturally because it would end up to less than 10 dreads upon my head with thinkness of angel hair pasta to work with. My icon is an old picture, my hair is currently half way to my boobs, so yeah, 6 inches reached. CHECK! My determination to get dreads and not caring about the starting look process and people, CHECK! But my lack of knowledge about what to do with my hair, since al natualle is not an option, is holding me back. Also, where and who would do them. I do not not trust my self to paint my own nails, not along dread my hair. As much advise, and info would be simply streling:)
Hello Diana. When people extend dreadlocks, that's pretty much all they're doing - extending the dreadlocks they already have. So if you only had 10 dreadlocks (I think you'll muster up more than 10) then extensions would just make those 10 longer. I don't really recommend extending new dreads though anyhow. That's not to say that you can't - there are plenty of people out there who will do it for you - I just don't personally recommend it. Young dreadlocks are soft and not what I would try to attach a heavy extension to so it's not really an ideal situation. It will also increase and complicated the washing and drying times. With regards to who can do them for you. Well the extension part is slightly more complicated but the general sectioning and initial dreadlocking can be done by yourself and a friend - I don't recommend trying to do your whole head solo. Or you can enlist the help of a professional of which there are many, both salon based and people who specialise in just dreadlocks. They obviously cost more than a friend would do, but sometimes it's the better option. If you are going to get someone else to do it for you I would recommend you fully research the person, ask them questions and what they're going to do and only proceed if you are 100% confident with the methods they're going to use. For example if you were opposed to waxes and products and would suck to pay out for someone to do your hair only to then find out they're putting unwanteds on it!
Lazy Dreads When would it be a healthy period to extend dreads? Also if you extend dreads, can you de-extend them? It took me 4 years to grow about 6 inches. I plan to have my dreads in for 4 years min, but I hope for them to be longer, because I just wanna:)
Your videos are great! Wish I would've found such good info about dreads when I first got started. There's so much misinformation and confusion in the internet about dreadlocks, maintaining them and whatnot.. So yeah, keep up the good work! :)
You definitely can! I have a friend who has four dreads scattered throughout her naturally straight hair. You can have one or three, or an entire head of you'd like!
burningdiamond I have Afro-textured hair and some of this applies to our hair, the stereotypes part (for us, add in some people think black men with locs are criminals, black women with locs are lesbians), the get up and go part applies to blacks who only seperate. But yeah those with Afro-textured manicured salon, palm-roll every 3 weeks or more, or they latch every month or two. Doing it more often than that causes thinning. Personally, I only seperate.
Definitely got a new subscriber here. :) I'm pregnant and considering dreading up (again). I want to take advantage of all this new growth I have, and not have to go thru the hair loss post pregnancy. :) You're dreads are seriously sweet.
Hey man! Great video. I've got dreads that are about 5 months old and I watched this video and it actually helped with my decision to use wax/gel or not. Everyone kept telling me I could and a lot of other youtubers seem to but nobody said if it actually helps lock them up faster or slower. Thank you!
Very informative! Now digesting! :) Helpful for peeps like me who's been strolling around channels nearly a month to know and get info as much as I can before being one of the few(fingers crossed). Appreciate your videos. Thanks!
When you pull a wool sweater over your head you'll notice it makes your hair all static-y and messy. Wearing a wool hat can help do the same for your loose hairs, encouraging them to knot together.
Finally putting dreads back in after three years ago when I cut them out. Super excited to have them back soon even when my hair is starting to try and naturally dread. But it's always nice to refresh myself on the process of dreads after so long :)
I would suggest taking two dreads in the spot you want a big dread and wrap the two together with string or small type of rope and leave them wrapped for a while then they will grow together or you can just let them congo or take one dread and pull it through the loose hair at the bottom of the other dread and they will congo together hope this helps good luck!
your channel is awesome both fun to watch and educational . makes me want dreads too, they look so good on you! thanks for putting this wonderful channel out
wow. love this . so helpful . you helped me start my dreads over two years ago and now I have some of the best, healthy and long locks & want to Make my own vid of my journey with them .. thank you !
I'm definitely thinking about starting dreadlocks this year, I have mixed kids hair, so really curly. I'm just going to have to wait a while because my hair is about an inch right now! But very informative video thanks man!
Thank you so much for this. I've been wanting dreadlocks for years, and this has helped me realize that it's not for me ( I'm indecisive). I absolutely love them though, yours are great, and your accent too!! :D
I'd like to add that going to the salon too often - crocheting, latching and palm-rolling in the first year a lot - can also thin your dreadlocks and your roots.
People who worry about attracting bugs or lice with dreadlocks, lice hate tangled hair. they like super clean, smooth hair cause its easier to move around. They also prefer to chill on your head by the roots, not at the ends or middle. There's no food there. They eat skin particles and suck blood like fleas. Hair itself doesn't serve a nutritional value for them. So don't be worried about attracting bugs with dreads unless you happen to be around someone who already has them.
The thing with people staring is that a part of becoming more happier with yourself and learning to not worry about it and the waiting time is learning patience.
I just got dreadlocks today in a salon and they are super messy and waxy (I might regret her using wax soon), but watching this video makes me feel TONS better about it :) So, thank you!
I am too old for dreads and that's one reason i want them! I have always had kinky hair which curls up all too easily - when it's wet outside my hair has gone kinky again after straightening it and it drives me crazy. My Chi Gong teacher has dreads so i thought why not? Did not know anything about them at all; I thought they happened from just not combing - thanks for your knowledge.
Dude .. ur video was soo informative .. I am totally considering dreadlocks .. and u have answered so many questions tht I had about the topic .. I thnk ive pretty much made up my mind and am gna go forward with them .. thnkx so much for ur input .. it helped out alot .. much thnkx .. u fkn rock!
i dont know if they are right for me but it was very interesting watching this video! i didnt know it was such a process! love the video, going to watch more for sure~
Well, I watched this vid because I really want dreads! I kinda already had an idea of what to expect, especially with all the staring and stuff but I still want dreads! Subbed! You give good realistic advice bruh. :)
The ten inch bit got you an insta-sub. Thanks for the great advice and thankyou for being to the point. Listening to people talking about their day on how-to or information videos is so frustrating. :3
Great video, I've been doing the natural method for four days now and I had no idea how long the process takes, I think I'm going to do the top of my head with the back comb method to have a nice part and get them started and lane the back and sides natural, I like the natural look, but I had no idea how long it can take! Very helpful video, I'm a hair stylist, been doing hair for 10 years, I can't wait to see what kind of sh!t ppl who have to say about it!!!
I already have to think about showering as a depressed person. So I can't just brush them that easily. I MUST shower, so I better use that energy for things I must do, instead of optionals. I'm gonna go freeform. Thank you for the things to consider
Thanks for the helpful video Lazy Dreads. I've considered dreads on and off for a few years, right along side growing a beard. It would seem the mental preparing is similar, especially when dealing with judgmental people. I've only shoulder length hair though, I think a little more length will be preferable.
hey thanks man, been looking around on youtube while im doing my dreads. i got 17 figured out. you have some good insight, i was mainly concerend about washing them so it helps to know i feel the same way about washing as you do :) thanks for the education.
Soo dreads are like kids when there young they or really messy but as they get get older the get better

Considering starting #dreadlocks this summer? Here's what you need to know.
I've been wanting dreads for almost a year now, and have just now finally convinced my parents to let me get them, which is a shame because if I had put the knots in when I first wanted them they would be almost mature now. But hey, better late than never.
Aburnkatoo McDooDoo I am considering dreads but my hair is straight and it just comes to eye level. Please help!!! Also I am white
You will likely need to grow your hair longer.
I habe scalp problems. Can I get dreads anyway? I need to oil my scalp on a regular base.

If you have less than 6 inches of hair you really cannot create that many knots which therefore increases the likelihood that they will just wash out.
this is true. i did my hair at 6 inches and it was hell. luckily i have really curly hair so most of em them made it. but i recommend waiting
my hair is now 13 cm can i start now its almost 6 inches just 2 cm less
and i skate and sweat everyday will it make my process slow or it is an advantage for me
I just would try to not be that active the first week as that is when they are knotting up and you dont wash your hair as much to encourage the knots. Basically clean hair knots up better.
There’s a thing called crochet hooking which is instant dreadlocks. But I don’t know if that was a thing 6 years ago?

diana voronina also, dread extensions, is it like they put in hair then dread
or dread the hair and then attach it
The longer the dreadlocks are in by themselves, the stronger they will be.
You can remove the extensions again later.
They can be done both ways.

When you pull a wool sweater over your head you'll notice it makes your hair all static-y and messy. Wearing a wool hat can help do the same for your loose hairs, encouraging them to knot together.
lol u look like tarzan
Finally putting dreads back in after three years ago when I cut them out. Super excited to have them back soon even when my hair is starting to try and naturally dread. But it's always nice to refresh myself on the process of dreads after so long :)
'When I first got dreadlocks they were only down to here.'
*gestures to his entire head
you’ve helped me the most out of all the videos i’ve watched, ty so much
Fantastic vid, just the kind of info I was looking for sometimes its hard to find good info like this so thanx
Thank you for putting the info in the description. Great videos.
im 18 and i dont think im ready for dreads but i will definitely get some when my hair grows out
I would suggest taking two dreads in the spot you want a big dread and wrap the two together with string or small type of rope and leave them wrapped for a while then they will grow together or you can just let them congo or take one dread and pull it through the loose hair at the bottom of the other dread and they will congo together hope this helps good luck!
Absolutely love your video! You have officially convinced me to lock my hair :) now just to find the time to start it lol. Thanks a million! ♡
You're welcome :) Glad to be of assistance!
your channel is awesome both fun to watch and educational . makes me want dreads too, they look so good on you! thanks for putting this wonderful channel out
Hi, thanks for stopping by! I'm glad you enjoy what I do! :))
I'm starting the freeform method so I'm carrying on watching your 2nd video. Thanks great vid bruh.
Your dreads are beautiful and so are you. Thanks this helped a lot.
wow. love this . so helpful . you helped me start my dreads over two years ago and now I have some of the best, healthy and long locks & want to Make my own vid of my journey with them .. thank you !
I'm definitely thinking about starting dreadlocks this year, I have mixed kids hair, so really curly. I'm just going to have to wait a while because my hair is about an inch right now! But very informative video thanks man!
This video was very helpful in my choice to get dreadlocks. Keep posting videos man!
I've been trying to decide if I should do dreads for over 3 years now and I've finally chosen too
People are gonna judge me and laugh at me for dreads but I won't care I love reggae and I wanna show some love
hey man i need help how do i start
Well.. I wouldn't recommend the application of wax!
Yeah, I know lol. Have any suggestions for how to cope with the dreads with wax?
Unfortunately the best suggestion would have only worked if given before it was applied ^^
Hahaha, joy! Well they aren't doing too bad yet so I suppose all isn't lost :)
Thank you... I was considering to start doing dreadlocks... But my hair is WAY TOO SHORT to start them up... THANK YOU, REALLY!
Very good video. I have had so many people say crazy things about dreadlocks. Thank-you so much for informing people. :)
I thnk ive pretty much made up my mind and am gna go forward with them .. thnkx so much for ur input .. it helped out alot .. much thnkx .. u fkn rock!
Thank you! This makes me feel a lot better!
I love your videos, so much good info and it has helped me out so much. Thank you
They won't be very long, but it's up to you to decide whether they'll be long enough or not.
i dont know if they are right for me but it was very interesting watching this video! i didnt know it was such a process! love the video, going to watch more for sure~
Well, I watched this vid because I really want dreads! I kinda already had an idea of what to expect, especially with all the staring and stuff but I still want dreads! Subbed! You give good realistic advice bruh. :)
just wanted to say thank you for all the information.
I'm just going to get extensions before being fully committed to having them
I'm almost 33 and have wanted dreads since I was 9!!! Better late than never
The ten inch bit got you an insta-sub.
+Dainon86 The longer the hair, the better :) All the best!
hey thanks man, been looking around on youtube while im doing my dreads. i got 17 figured out. you have some good insight, i was mainly concerend about washing them so it helps to know i feel the same way about washing as you do :) thanks for the education.
