    I started mine with twist and rip method. A lot of them unraveled and loosened up within a week or so but it was cool because I wanted to just get some twists started and then free form from there.

    T&R here! my dreads mega shrunk at about 8 months and shrunk even more so. I'm at the year mark now and I think they're finally done shrinking and finally starting to grow. Thank goodness.

    @Ethan Smith - Neglect is undoubtedly the most unpredictable and very often the slowest method. There are no certainties. While some people experience great results in months, for others it takes years.

    You really helped me feel at peace about the twist and rip I recently did on myself. I did it and kind of regretted it and took it out, watched your video on sectioning and then redid it using my great Grandma's hand mirror, lol. It turned out with lots of small ones in the front, fewer, bigger ones in the back, and I kinda wish there were more on top, but yeah I think it'll look almost more like neglect dreads than twist and rip dreads, they're still very chaotic and random. I was worried because they're so loose and hideous and some have large unknotted sections at the base... It's just really loose and sloppy but I know if I take them out again I'll loose even more hair... Haha it was kinda stressful but after watching this I felt better. Thanks. I guess you don't have dreads now, but you'll forever remain a beacon of light to us trying to get started. Thanks.

    About the hair being less tight with this method, its true! when I first experimented with dreads a couple weeks ago I did one twist and rip dread, didn't wanna go that way yet till my hair was longer, and I was able to literally rip the dread apart back to normal hair without much struggle!

    I did T&R to shoulder length hair 26months ago and it is only now getting back to the starting length. It loops up into itself and shrinks a ton!

    But if you combine the backcombing and T&R? Backcomb a bit before you start twist and rip? I feel that it must get some more pros, it tightening up a bit faster from the back combing, but you still have some soft coziness with the loose ends from T&R? A con could be it will damage the hair much more....

    Hey, I've been studying dreads for the past year and tried a couple of methods (neglect and backcomb.) Didn't have the patience for neglect, I know which ever method you use you have to be patient but I just couldn't keep up this method. I got my hair back combed when it was roughly 5 inches at a salon but refused to carry on paying money for re twists and the pain was un bare able as I have quite a sensitive scalp. Recently I have been considering the TnR method, I like how simple it is and it will not be expensive to do.. I guess my real question is how would they turn out if I were to use the TnR method on my hair as it is now (nearly 7 inches?)

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Twist and rip does not start out as tight as backcomb. Backcomb can create really tight little lumps if it's really worked at, whereas twist and rip will just knot the hair into strands. Backcomb creates many more tighter knots vs twist and rip, so if you have short hair twist and rip may be unable to form enough knots to keep it held together. It might work.. but I personally wouldn't twist and rip someone's hair if it was 7 inches.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I did twist and rip and at 8 months they have shrunk up and looped up over 2/3 of my starting out length. I would back comb if I had it to do again. Its going to take another year to look like dreads.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no guarantee that the same would not have happened with backcomb. The amount of shrinkage depends on the person and the hair, not the method used. The method used will just affect the timeframe over which the shrinkage takes place.

      @wingsonmyback1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I didn't know that, I have only seen a few on you tube that have their hair like mine is, I call them Beaver tails ,one big mass of tight rats with about 2 inches of a round formed dread from the scalp. Not at all like my picure.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Backcomb and Twist & Rip are just methods of holding the chunks of hair that you want to lock together in place, that's all they're doing. Backcomb and T&R don't create dreadlocks, they're just there to keep the lumps of hair somewhat organised so that you have better control over where they're forming and how many you have. The thickness is not regulated by the method either, the thickness is dependant on how large the sections are - how big the chunks that you backcomb or twist & rip are and how thick your hair is. If you took the same amount of hair the resultant locks would be the same thickness regardless of whether they were started with backcomb or twist & rip. There are differences over the short term in that the shrinkage with backcomb can often occur all at once near the start if they are backcombed particularly tightly - this results in the initial locks being short and fat Vs the Twist & rip equivalent starting out long and whispy and then shrinking over a longer period of time. This extended period of shrinkage means that T&R dreads are on average more prone to lumps and loops. Backcombed dreads will certainly still get lumps and loops, but on average you will usually find more forming from twist & rip. In the end both twist & rip and backcomb end up in exactly the same place. Matured backcombed started locks will look the same as matured Twist & Rip started locks.

    • @wingsonmyback1
      @wingsonmyback1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wonder why or how peoples dreads all seem to lock up the same? some even start their dreads at different times maybe several week from the first ones but they all lock up and loop the same. I saw one girls, everyone was looped in big wave all her dreads looked the same. or al the persons dreads shrinkup to the same length. Never one loopy and one straight, like Galaprils dreads look at how hers all developed to look alike

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hairs across your whole head are made up of similar hair - same hair type, same hair thickness, exposed to the same things. The shrinkage is dependant on the hair thickness - hair thickness is pretty much the same across most of your head, so they shrink the same amount. However while the variables are similar across the whole of one head, they are very different between two different heads and so no two heads of locks are identical.

    I have straight hair and did twist n rip method. My dreads are very loose and flat (3 days old) should they be tight when I start them? I tried fixing them with a crochet hook but it doesn't really work because they're basically just messy/frizzy looking braids. Should I start over and do them tighter? Or will they knot up eventually? I'm so confused as to what they should be like to start with..

    Idk if you still reply to the comments, but i'm 4 months into my dreadlock journey and I used the twist and rip method as I wanted to lose as little length as possible and I also kept the ends loose for the same reason. I was wondering when the ends will start dreading so it looks more like the rest of the hair. I know some people have told me that it won't dread but instead "matt" but I have a hard time believing that since people that do the freeform method only let their hair be and they turn out to look like dreadlocks. Anyway, love your content and I hope you see this and reply as it would really make me feel more comfortable about my dreads

    I made 2 dreads for the first time today, I used this technique. the first one has turned out fine but I've noticed that the hairs at my scalp of the second dread have started breaking out of the dread. I'm leaving them alone so I don't get why the hair is breaking. I did have to redo the second dread a couple of times because I got loops. Will it be ok or should I take it out?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you've broken hairs... then you've broken hairs - taking it out...again.. won't fix what's already broke. It probably was not advisable or worth redoing it because of the loops though.... once you start washing them and they start shrinking... you'll likely get plenty of loops either way.

    I have had my dreads for about 2 and a half months and I have noticed that one in particular has about a 1 inch spot if undreaded hair right in the middle of the dread. I started my dreads with the tnr method and have done some root rubbing with great success and most of my dreads are awesome. Just this 1 is driving me crazy where the straight spot is lol...should I just leave it alone or is there some method I could use to get that spot to lock up? Thanks for the great information you share!

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Janeen Nelson It'll lock up, given enough time. I've had a few identical questions come through the Q&A videos - by the time the questions have come up to be answered, the problems had sorted themselves out.

    • @janeennelson656
      @janeennelson656 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Thank you for answering me so quickly! It's good to know that it will more than likely fix itself. Someone told me that I should get some lock accelerator but I have not used any products or waxes on then and don't intend to in the future. I know the tnr method is not a natural way of dreads forming but I am trying to keep them as "natural" as I can by being chemical free.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      T&R is just for holding the hair together into sections, the process by which those hairs interact and knot up over time is the same process that dreadlocks formed via any other method will go through in order to become fully knotted up. They just need time and space.

  • @jame950
    @jame950 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question: one of the first dreads I did with twist and rip I think was a bit too tight from to many twists between pulls. With this fix it self or do I need to cut it or do something else to it?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Lanier T&R is basically only there to keep the hair sectioned off, over time the hairs will move around, loosening and tightening and will generally even out over time on their own.

    Are twist and rip dreads removable?
    I don't have a crochet hook, nor do I know how to crochet dreadlocks. However, I have gotten quite good at the twist and rip method and was wondering if I could remove them without cutting off any of my hair. Salons are far too expensive to install dreadlock extensions professionally and I can't find the answer to my question anywhere on dreadlock websites/forums.

    Hi, I have a question. The method a friend used to make my one starting dreadlock was the twist & rip. My dreadlock is about 3 weeks old. I understand that starting dreadlocks take a whole to mature and actually turn into dreadlocks on their own. However, just so that they don't look as crazy while they are maturing, is it okay to use a crochet once a week to pull in hairs that start to stick out? Just for a bit of maintenance? Or will that slow down the process as you say?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Crochet hooking is a much debated topic that polarizes most dreadlock groups. Using the hook will pull in the loose hairs, but can also break hairs which will permanently damage them. Over time the breakages can add up and lead to weak spots. Some people can crochet without issue for long periods of time... others aren't so lucky. Because of the risk involved I don't personally recommend it's usage as I do not wish to be responsible for any damage which may occur.

    • @saraherv4919
      @saraherv4919 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just started doing dreadlocks to my hair and I used the T&R method. But when I finished after a few hours later it seemed like it's coming undone at the roots I'm not sure if it's suppose to do that, and was wondering should I just leave it like it is or redo it. What should I do?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      LSUTIGERS5812 Twist & Rip is a starting method - it starts dreadlocks off, but it doesn't create finished strong, tight dreadlocks - it takes months for them to form up. What you start out with is just knotted lengths of hair which will loosen before they start to tighten...... however there is obviously a difference between a "normal" expected loosening (usually after the first wash) and then there is a loosening that's just due to the method not being executed effectively - and it's not really possible to say which one someone is experiencing until they see how it holds up through the first wash.

    To make dreads tighter while your doing the twist and rip method can you back comb it a little to make the dread tighter? (:

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use T&R and backcomb on the same lock... but you can't effectively use both methods on the same part of a lock. For example you can start the roots with backcomb and do the body of the lock with T&R... or you can finish the tips with backcomb. But you can't run backcomb through a section that's already been twist and ripped... if you've twist and ripped correctly you won't be able to run a comb through it...

Im not talking a little braided looking..they look straight braided! I twisted too much! I would twist then rip, twist again, rip, twist, rip all the way down the length of the section. Now its been two weeks and they're already starting to dread at the scalp. Do I need to do them over?? Thank you again..so much! Many blessings!

      Lisa Maynard If you have not randomised the strands which you grab to do the ripping enough, they'll come out braided. As they're washed over the early months they will loosen and lose the texture.

    Hey hey! Quick question, I used twist and rip but I did a lot more twisting than the max of 3 that you said and I ripped or pulled them pretty tight. Was that the "wrong" thing to do, make them tight in the beginning? It's been about 7 months now and some have shrunk a lot and look crazy like sound waves ha and others are fat at the top and taper for a long section. What's going on with my dreads??? Did I doom to look insane them from the beginning? Some are skinny at the top with fat bottoms and others are fat at the top and taper for long sections. So did I pull them too tight ya think?
    Awesome videos. I really appreciate all the info! Thanks!

      Claudia Ramos I don't think the way you twisted and ripped them 7 months ago will still be having an effect now. The loops, lumps, bumps would have occurred anyway:

    Is it possible to combine twist and rip with backcombing? For example, backcombing the ends to make them rounder and somewhat seal the new dread to prevent unravelling in the shower etc?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      metalismysoul You can combine them in that way - multiple methods can be used on a single dread (at least on different parts of a single dread)... but it'll still likely loosen back up again once it's washed.

    Nice video man.(:
    Question though, does it really matter if you wash your hair with dread shampoo or not the week prior to your dreading?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shampoo that you wash with beforehand won't make or break the process, but it can help. Starting out with a residue free shampoo as early as possible means that you'll know that you get along with that shampoo (would suck to start the dreads, wait until your first wash and then realise the shampoo makes you itch etc). Your scalp will also have had time to get used to the new shampoo and therefore it won't be so much of a transition - it's enough of a change to go from normal hair to knotted hair and so it helps if your head is only dealing with one change at a time. The residue free shampoos will also not contain conditioners so your hair will hopefully be in the best state for knotting. You're going to want to have your lock-appropriate shampoo ready for when you start, so it's just better if you get it that one extra week early :)

    I'm trying to do the twist and rip method but it just won't work. I have rubber bands in and it still comes out every time. My hair is 8 inches in length

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      reNo1g Twist and rip can take some practice to be able to use the method efficiently - some people seem to be able to get the hang of it pretty easily... however others find it a lot more challenging. In general backcomb is a lot easier for people to carry out - especially when it's their first time.
      Dreadlocks can come loose and fall out for a number of reasons - the hair may be too soft/conditioned, the hair may be too short for the chosen starting method - or too short in general, the dreadlocks may be started in effectively.

    • @reNo1g
      @reNo1g 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks bro. I've only been shampooing my hair for the past week. do you lose less length doing twist and rip compared to backcombing? i heard you do and thats the only reason id prefer twist and rip

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      reNo1g Over the long term you'll end up losing the same amount of length regardless of how you start them - they'll shrink up as much as they're going to shrink up - twist & rip is simply a starting method that holds the hair in sections - it doesn't dictate how the actually dreadlocks lock up and mature long term.

    I have rip and twist dreads and they are very loopy and have so many zigzags

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Loops and ziz-zags form as the locks shrink up and mature. Different parts of the lock will shrink at different rates and this leads to some parts getting pushed outwards - forming lumps, bumps, loops etc. It might not be a look that everyone really wants from their locks, but it is a sign that they are maturing, shrinking and tightening. Since the shrinking of T&R locks tends to be over a longer period of time, they can be more prone to these lumps and bumps, but it depends on the individual set.

      ilovenilo Dreadlocks can be dyed, but preferably only with dyes that do not contain conditioners. It also requires a lot of rinsing to remove the excess dye and so is generally not recommended for young dreadlocks as all that rinsing can be very rough.

    Do you (or anybody) have any idea if the twist and rip method makes it harder to remove dreads than the backcomb method? I've heard that it does, but I don't know whether to believe it or not. Like you, I plan on keeping my dreads (once I get them done) forever, but who knows what we will want years from now, so I want to be prepared!

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's really going to come down to the individual set - a particular backcombed set might be hard to unlock, a particular twist & rip set might be hard to unlock etc. Once T&R and backcombed locks have matured there's very little difference between the two anyhow. I don't think you'll encounter enough of a difference there for it to affect your choice for starting method.

    Hello good friend :) I removed my locks recently but I really want them back (worst mistake of my life) so this time I was considering to try the T&R method. The thing is, removing my dreadlocks I lost lot of hair so now I have good hair on the top of my head but just a few going down by the end. Now my hair are a little bit over my shoulders, I tried to do one or two locks with this method and it seems to work fine because it can keep my lenght acceptable and it's not shortening my hair too much. My goal is to have thin dreads and as much as possible and it's gonna be a little difficult 'cause I have fine hair by nature. Can you suggest me which method could be the best for me and if you have some tips I'll be happy to listen to your advices :) Thank you!

    By short hair do you mean less then like 6/7 inches? I'm at about 9 inches (to my chin) and drawn between the two methods... I'm leaning more towards tnr because I have longish curly hair (thick) and feel like it will look maybe a little more natural then the beginning stages of the backcomb method.... what are you thoughts? also what about a combination of both methods? like backbombing the roots and then twist and ripping the rest? not really sure if thats possible

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd likely be fine using tnr on 9 inches of hair. You can use a combination of both if you want, but there's no huge benefit to doing so.

    @caitlynnmooney7882 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    okay so I was reading some previous questions below and read one where you talked about how twist & rip was more likely than backcombing to get bumps and loops... is there any way to avoid getting those as they lock up? Twist & rip was my chosen method to lock my hair but then I saw that and now I'm not so sure.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Caitlynn Mooney Lumps/bumps/loops form as the dreadlocks shrink up. To stop them from forming you'd need to stop the dreadlocks from shrinking up... and that would mean stopping from from tightening... so no, you can't really avoid them from forming. A 'typical' backcomb dreadlock will start off short, fluffy and fat and a 'typical' twist & rip dreadlock will start out long and flowing. Starting out longer gives more space for shrinking to occur along the length and therefore more opportunities for lumps to spring up. However... in practice there is not really such a thing as a 'typical' dreadlock - people are going to get lumps and bumps with backcomb and they're going to get them with twist & rip. The only way to 'avoid' it would be to rigorously crochet the whole thing up.

    Hey, so I'm trying to get dreadlocks which are a bit skinnier, but a lot more dreads are formed. This is usually started by using twists, but that works only with african textured hair. I want my dreads to grow out like how rapper Chief Keef(PLEASE look him up to see his dread type) but Im not sure if the twist and rip method will work for that. I am Puerto Rican, so naturally my hair is curly/wavy, and Im trying to get some Chief Keef dreads. Please respond ASAP. Thanks for your time

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rican Dinero I am not entirely sure what to recommend in this case as while you will be able to form dreadlocks from your hair, the methods that you're able to use - and the results that you are able to achieve will depend on what type of hair that you have. I'm not sure that with your hair texture you'll be able to form them to look like Chief Keef's.... in the same way that I don't believe that Chief Keef would be able to form them to look like those formed from your hair type. I wouldn't say it's impossible... but it's probably not a form that the hair would naturally take and would somehow need to be forced to take that form and I'm not really sure how you'd go about doing that.

      The T&R holds everything in place. As the hair is held in place, it will knot and lock together. All of the new growth from the root will be held in place by the locked section further down which allows the new growth to lock up. Provided everything is left alone long enough, the new growth will lock up on it's own, no maintenance required. My entire head of hair is new growth.
