The only think that keeps my post tlou2 depression from killing me is that I have this little fantasy where Joel and Ellie meet in the afterlife and they go on an adventure through space
With the show being as good as it is and fans absolutely loving Pedro pascal I really wonder how the show runners will deal with Joel’s death as no matter how you change it, the fans are going to backlash even worse than the gamers did. Joel was such a huge character that we all got so close to and for the story to kill him off in this manner was truly angering but the shows going to have to do it regardless, I just don’t know how they’ll stop fans from being extremely upset.
i disagree, i think a lot of fans have come to feel a lot more positive about the overall arch of the series over time and even tho fans will be upset, it feels super unlikely that fans will respond as toxicly angry as they did when the game came out. tbh game fanbases can be fucking awful when it comes to backlash - one of the worst aspects of a lot of modern gaming communities

Unlike Gamers™, HBO viewers are used to characters being killed off unexpectedly. Additionally, you're just watching a show, you're not playing as Joel.
@@benmartin8759 I definitely agree that the gaming community is way more toxic in their reaction but this show did such an amazing job having us feel connected to Joel and Ellie that I think the same shock and disappointment will happen considering just like the game we are conditioned to view Joel as the main character. I’m super interested in how they will go about it but still have trouble believing it won’t be a big deal as I know folks who didn’t play the game and didn’t like the ending where Joel kills Marlene because the show made Marlene seem more like a good human being so if that made them feel a type of way I can’t imagine how they’ll react to the main character being brutally killed off at the very beginning of the sequel
@@Kunfuxu I thought about that too but even GOT didn’t kill off the main character in the first episode (maybe second depending on how much they decide to add or take out from the games). I personally felt like the game killed off Joel a bit too quickly and the problem wasn’t that Joel died but the way they killed him right away so I do wonder how non-game players will feel having the main character they grew to connect and love is killed off right away after being so hyped for a second season thinking Joel will be a big part of it again

I mean... it's hard to give a shit about Abby. They do a good job of showing us she's even worse than Joel. A genuine piece of sh*t. Nothing like her Father or lover. Joel genuinely scared me at the end of the first game. I was one of those players that didn't want to kill the doctor and didn't start enthusiastically offing Fireflies until I died a few times lol. But wow the story of Abby is like a poor mans Joel. Her journey is showing her she's worse than the man she hated. They straight up rehash babysitting plot to make us like her a bit more yet I get the distinct feeling she and that kid died offscreen. The kid probably died first in her arms. Then she slowly died of... you name it. Infection, starvation, being literally strung up for weeks. Or a clicker came and tore her apart. In the end, Joel saved Ellie again. Its his love for her that saved her from her from her violent nature and succumbing to the depths of depravity that is the character of Abby.

@@MlpFartgolf club to the head and a shot to the cheek are different. The shot had an angle which gave Tommy a chance at survival but the hit at Joel was to take his like and was precise. Although Tommy should have had long term disability after that shot

Edit: I think I was more disappointed with the way the trailers "lied" to us than with the game itself, but I still don't think the Joel we know from the first game would have died like that
I like how much they showed joel death effected Ellie like giving her ptsd and how they treat it
All plot holes and horrific story telling aside, In isolation, these 10 minutes were phenomenal. Everything about it, the choreography, the atmosphere, the dialogue, it just felt so authentic.
From the depiction of Ellie’s debilitating PTSD, To the development of her conflicting relationship contrasted with the conviction in Tommy’s eye(s). imo this bit was a masterpiece from ND - goes to show what the game could’ve been had they not taken the direction that they did.
they just had to kill abby in the end and everyone wouldve been feeling better about the game regardless of joels death.

The major leap I just can’t get over is the idea that Joel’s choice was so traumatizing that they felt compelled to team up and track him across multiple states: who’s gonna do that with so much distance, infected, and raiders standing between them and their target?

I'm just hoping they make a 3rd one with ellie going after dina. this game was so amazing and so depressing at the same time. this game teaches people that revenge never solves anything which is why ellie let abby go.
The “Revenge Bad” storyline is nothing profound or new. Even in the triple A gaming space, Metal Gear Solid V had come out within a stone’s toss of this game’s release and tackles the same exact theme.
I think ellie lets abby go for various reasons, imo the biggest factor being that abby is in the right, multiple times at that.
If we do get a third game Ellie will likely find her real father. She would probably get pregnant by the end of the story.

They really dropped the ball with the creative direction they decided to go for the story. Nobody wanted this story, they wanted more of playing as a protective badass bonding with this girl. Even a prequel would’ve been better than a sequel for a game that definitely didn’t need a sequel.

Ellie shouldn’t have to die for the world to have a vaccine. A vaccine isn’t gonna suddenly make the world go back to what it was. And the first game demonstrates how much humanity sucks and everyone’s killing each other, why does humanity deserve a vaccine? I don’t know anyone who felt Joel made the wrong choice in the end.
