I was in Lisbon in 2019 and went to the first record store in this video. I asked the owner to recommend some LPs that reflect Portuguese culture and he pulled out about 20 records and then spent 30 minutes explaining why they represented his culture. It was very educational. I selected 6 from that pile and he mailed them to my house (2 weeks later) so that I didn't have to carry them around with me through Portugal and Spain. They arrived a few days after I got home. I love all of them. What I don't understand about this video is why would someone fly to another country to get music that they heard 10, 20 or 30 years ago in their OWN country? I travel to learn NEW things. Visit museums. Eat NEW foods. Listen to NEW music. Be exposed to NEW culture. 5 of the records are 5 stars, the other one is 4 stars. Great music, great acoustics, great sound quality. One of them is Fado music. I don't understand a word but the music is hauntingly beautiful. Every time that I play them, they remind me of Lisbon. I love your videos but feel that this one missed out on introducing Portuguese music and culture to many people who have never been there.
For people curious about the fire Darko talks about at 5:38 search for "Incêndio do Chiado", it was something that affected the city center greatly and among other things burned the historical archives of the music label Valentim de Carvalho which was a huge loss for Portuguese music culture. Always happy someone visits my city, glad you enjoyed it Darko.
Hello I live in Lisbon and I follow your videos, but this one was special, it was with great pleasure that I saw your video recorded in my city and country. You passed some of the best shops, but Lisbon has many more. Next time you come here, look for more stores on google maps or on the internet. 👍
Your Berlin record store trekking is what initially brought me to your channel and I was glad to see this one in Lisbon. Would definitely love to see another video on other record stores in Berlin !!!!
Lisbon is a fantastic city both for music and culture in general. cant wait to get back there soon. I travel all over Europe with work and recently returned from Barca after 2 years of lockdown so was over the moon to finally get back visiting new record stores. Discos Paradiso was a fantastic store. Milan next month, cant wait!
LOVED IT!! Yes please do another Berlin Shopping Spree! I REALL ENJOYED the first one and I use your videos to discover new and old music that I may not have heard of because I truly love your eclectic taste in music! Thanks for this!
That's awesome. Was in Lisbon a while ago and watching your video brought back good memories of vinyl hunting in that awesome city. Next time you're there have a look at Carbono. Fairly central and with an impressive collection of crates of any sort. Mainly vinyl, all second hand. A wonderful Aladdin cave for record hunters. Keep up with the great work and looking forward to the Berlin guide!
I would absolutely love to see more videos about shops in Berlin. While I enjoy all of your videos to varying degrees, the record shop videos are some of my favorite. I can also get videos like this past my family, who sometimes disagrees with some of my hifi video choices. Please keep them coming, cheers!
Your mention of the experience of playing the LP in the format it was intended (5 songs per side) trumping (potentially) better sound quality was interesting to me as is makes me wonder other aspects to the listening experience you may prioritize over (maybe marginal) sound quality improvements. That may be a good video idea to allow us to calibrate to your preferences. Great video!
I’m not even a vinyl listener but finding cool neighborhoods to explore via record stores is brilliant. And thanks for the Lisbon recommendation, will be there this summer.
I LOVE this video!!! When I travel around the world, I also look for the local cd and vinyl stores. But I ask the person behind the counter what their favorite muisic is and I buy it. I have seldom been disappointed. And yes, I could watch videos like this one all day long. This video prompted me to plan a trip to Lisbon and visit these stores. The same with the next video you make like this one; I'll visit those stores! Keep up the fantastic work!
Was in Lisbon few years back with my Mrs for valentines weekend. Not only did we love the city but nipped into a couple of those record shops, really cool vibe city. Yes more record shop tours please, we all do it.
John definitely a yes from me for more videos on shopping for vinyl and CDs in Berlin. I love Berlin and Germany in general and would love to hear about shops to visit when I visit next year.
Love this type of content. Vynil/CD shopping anywhere (especially with your great video shots and editing) would be highly appreciated. Thanks for sharing John.
Enjoyed this. One of my great pleasures since arriving in the US has been to explore record stores in strange cities. As you said, in addition to turning up new finds it often takes you to interesting parts of town.
Ahhh! As a local, hope you had a ton of fun - You clearly picked some pretty cool stores, but there are some hidden gems you need to find more about. Flur is literally 50 meters from my place. Next time you drop by, have a look at D'O Vigário - Has vinyl only, no CDs, but it makes up for that with really great wine and tapas! Let me know in advance and i'll point you in a few right directions!
I like this even more than the unattainable hifi gear you review. I literally pause it, have a listen to the cd you bought and continue. Thanks for the great content :)
Made me feel the need for a trip Lisbon 🤓 And Berlin is always on my “want to go” list 🥳 Would love to bring my daughter music shopping in either city, she’s 17 and into music and this type of guides is really inspiring 🙏👍🏻
Ooo yes please I do like a record/cd hunting video. Always interested to see what other people are finding/buying as its the best way to expand your listening tastes :) TY
Oh man, I could just watch videos about trips to music stores. Reminds me of when I’d do it as a teen and in my 20’s. I’m glad physical media still exists.
Hi there Darko. Nice "remote working" in Lisbon, for sure. Thank you for your comments on Louie Louie. Maybe next time you come to Lisbon, you have to check the bins we have full of Cds of electronic / techno/dance stuff from late 80's to 2000. They're just not on display, because usually nobody buys them... It's a very specific market. Maybe next time you'll have more findings here. Best Regards (Jorge Dias - General Manager) By the way ... Louie Louie was the original bright yellow record shop in Lisbon. And it was like that because of the traditional colors of the Trams of the city...
Defo Darko. We'd love to see you trawling the record shops of Berlin. Especially the Techno orientated ones (Hard Wax etc.). Great vid btw. The more we can do to promote local record shops the better.
Love your video .Im a lisboet and I miss my city very much. COVID has made it impossible for me to go there since 2019 (my last visit). Lisbon is very cosmopolitan and welcoming. I'm happy you found little treasure there. By the way:The story about the yellow store his true. It's located in the Chiado area which burned to the ground, leaving only stone works standing. Today looks as good as when it was built (1700's)Please come back. Fernando in Canada. Cheers
Tubitek was born in the 90s in the city of Porto in northern Portugal. Then it closed for a long period maybe close to 20 years. happily reopened again. it was there that i bought my first cds um the 90s and luckily i will buy it again, abandoning the big stores such as amazon or FNAC. big store
I would love an episode on Berlin shops. One of the things I always do whenever I visit a (new) city is to find and go to the local record shops. I usually find things I won’t find in my own city. Plus I get to see/discover the city in a more non-touristy way.
“I am not going to sacrifice my listening experience at the alter of sound quality” - Darko 2022 This is the best thing I’ve ever heard an audiophile say.
Very nice. I'd really like to see a review of Berlin (or German in general) record stores. Also, I completely agree on the nonsense of double-LP re-issues w/ 2 or 3 tracks per side.
Definitely worthwhile content to explore. Personally I'm interested in selecting and sourcing high quality recordings in both digital and analogue formats from a variety of music genres.
Plz make another episode about reccord stores in Berlin. I loved the first one 👍and maybe include coffeshop reccomendations? Good coffe is a priority whenever I visit Berlin.
Greetings from India. Very enjoyable video, John. I'd love for you to do a record / CD shopping tour of Berlin. I'm going to be in the UK / Ireland soon for a couple of months and once my friends from Berlin find out we're in Europe, they'll freak out if we don't visit them again, which is fine with me as I enjoy Berlin (As an aside, during my first trip to Berlin, I had to cross over to the east via Checkpoint Charlie - that's how long I've been visiting Germany.)
If you going to visit Portugal next year come to Porto and check out Porto Calling Record store, like the name says, is a reference to London Calling from Clash, a very nice store with a lot of gems there and of course take a look at Louie Louie from Porto because you’ll see that are many differences, I’m sure that you’ll enjoy it
Loved this video as I do myself such things when I'm in a city that I've never been. Also the Berlin's guide you made. I can't wait for the next Berlin one too. Always cool to see and discover other shops.

A look at Berlin shops is a great idea. Enjoyed this episode about Lisbon very much.
I'm from Lisbon; what a surprise to see you were here! I hope you enjoyed our lovely city! Chears from Portugal!
I am portuguese and I live in Lisbon. I knew the first two stores and went to visit the others. Useful and helpful this video.

Hi. I'm from Lisbon. The Tubitek record store was previously a restaurant, built after the 80's fire. Just for info...
Thanks John! It would be great to see record shopping in Berlin as well 🙏🙏
I like this even more than the unattainable hifi gear you review. I literally pause it, have a listen to the cd you bought and continue. Thanks for the great content :)

That was funny to watch the video and see a Tubitek paper bag in there with one resting right next to me.

Love the record shopping videos. Maybe you could record some while you are shopping. A US reviewer does that and I really enjoy it.
A fellow talking head fan ! Cheers!

Please do make one about shopping in Berlin. Those of us stuck in the U.S. would love it!
Any suggestion for something like Booka Shade, chemical brothers , crystal method. Tough to find anything that I like
Yes - would love to see more music store videos.
