With Baron being a Stallion till over 3 years old, he developed a beautiful arched neck and roaching his mane has improved his look and also makes it easier to place and remove his collar. Jim is right Baron works daily in harness and it's easier to manage .
Good day, I was watching a video from the national Suffolk horse show, The lady at the breeding centre said boys get full body size at 6 years old but will continue to add muscle after this age, so Baron and boys have a bit to go both in body and in brain 😊Linda 🇬🇧
Most horses generally reach their full mental physical maturity at approximately 8 years of age. If horse is worked and physically fit like Baron is it really supports great health.
The point about making it easier to put Baron's collar on make perfect logical sense to me. I've always thought Baron is a handsome lad, whether he has a long mane or a crewcut! I love the new harnesses, they really look great!
I agree with you. I think it will be best for Barron with a mane-cut. He looks so handsome either way! He stood so well while you did it! Such a beautiful horse! Since I've watched videos before this one, I guess I never noticed!! Lol!! Now I see it in the video you are commenting on!! I really enjoyed this!! Always so much to learn. Thanks Jim & Brenda!! 💕
Brenda & Jim, we honestly think that all of your horses are beautiful, but Baron is special. We totally understand why his mane had to go...& he's still a stunning looking horse. Would love a piece of his beautiful mane...love from Virginia!! 💕
I think Baron looks quite handsome with his new doo! I’ve been waiting a long time for this day and now he’s one of the team and isn’t in line waiting to replace Fabio on the romance novels! Before I started watching your vlogs I’d never heard of roaching the manes but I’m all in because I just think it’s a cleaner and neater look when they are all geared up for work. Now I’ll be watching for Duke and Earl’s christening day. As for Ken not working as hard..I think his legs thank you because he does seem to have a lot of swelling issues. I just love all your horses and get nervous when you mention too many horses for your work load hoping never to hear that one or more might get rehomed. I get very attached to your animals…right down to the chickens so it would break my heart to see any of them leave Gordon Farms. I still miss Buck thinking of he and Ken every time you pull at the various events but I miss Lady pulling with Bill too. Life is full of situations we must learn to adapt to but I’m praying you will keep all the livestock you have. Good thing we don’t get too up close and personal with the cows or I fear the tears would leak every time one goes!!! I live ON the river Jim and Brenda and one thing I have learned is water is a force to be reckoned with and you can never predict what will happen when we are blessed with it in abundance. Every spring we live with not knowing if flooding will or won’t occur. Life is full of trials and I just have to trust God will see us through it all!!!:):):)
Magnificent. As soon as I heard your reasoning - that makes 100% sense for working horses - I could not wait to see that gorgeous Stallion neck. Baron you're even handsomer! Brenda so much less work for you who groom them so tirelessly and lovingly. What a good Boi Baron. Well done Jim.. ❤️from 🇨🇦
He is one amazing horse Such a solid mind on this animal Was wondering looked like a sore just ahead of his withers He and all other horses in your farm are so beautiful God bless
Most absorbed watching and hearing your logging routine questions answered. Your horses have the best life for their breeds able to work and be so appreciated and cared for!
Baron is such a gorgeous horse, so he is just as beautiful with his new G.I. haircut than he is with his golden mane!❤ I certainly understand the need for roaching mane, and Baron's mane breaking off where his collar sits definitely proves it's necessary. Beautiful horse!!!!!❤ As I watched Abby's channel Saturday, she was showing all the flooding there from tropical storm Debby. I wondered how the field where you put in new drainage tiles did? Hoping the new tiles helped the field not to flood too bad.
Jim, you're really right about the roached manes and collars. It's extra work to maintain, and it's a sweaty mess and the collar is definitely ruining his hair. This is proof to confirm your methods. I get it! I'd probably brush and braid, but I'm vain. He's still a good boy.
I absolutely Love Barons look!!!! I completely understand the reasoning why you keep all the manes cut as you do. I would do the same if I was in your line of work! I really love your videos, I wished I could visit & meet you & Brenda in person. Keep the videos coming!! Love the Gordon's! Barbara
Yep I noticed it in the last video lol. He looks GOOD and I like it much better, not only of his ragged looking mane but ease of maintaining it and does not catch or rub by the collar. Now go and do the rest of the working horses as well!
I want to say how fascinated I am at how your horses back up so well. It is one of my favorite things to watch when you are finagling carts and wagons and backing them into position, especially in the woods. Just love your connection with your horses, and the trust they have in you is truly amazing. I love watching and learning.
I like what you did with today's video Jim, answering questions and illustrating some with clips from a previous video. And you explained what you do with the trees that aren't good enough quality for selling.
I would've noticed within in a day of Baron looks.. It Mon, 12 Aug 2024. 9 45 pm. I am SOO GREATFUL that Barons Maine is finally ROACHED.! Yippee. Esthetically an functunely. His tail, on the other hand is gorgeous. Glad to know abt technics to holding lines. Ken must know hes slow nd old. Poor guy. . You have wicked smart viewers.!. Im so glad to hear you answering viewers questions today. How little Ive known all these yrs. I had no idea Baron wasn't PERFECT. hahaha. I SOLUTE YOU JIM you have an amazing amount of knowledge!. And Brenda I SALUTE YOU for being such a great right hand man to Jim. ❤❤ PS.Glad Skeppy is staying clean.
Another GREAT video, Jim and Brenda. I enjoyed all the viewer questions and Jim's answers. Learned a lot myself !! Blessings to your entire family 🙏🇺🇸.
He is accepting the clippers without any fuss. My Springer had to learn to be still when I was clipping his head and ears. You did a excellent job Jim.
I personally think that draft horses look so good with a short tail and a short mane/no mane. It just really defines their neck muscles, and like you said it gets really hot under there. As far as the short tail goes, it just looks so good. I’ve got a Shire paint cross and I had to clip her tail down because it was so dead on the ends, and she looks so good with it short. She’s about 17-17.5 hands and really has that draft build as well
Baron looks fine in his working-man haircut. Your horses all look strong and beautiful, and so well cared for. It's a pleasure to watch them work. Love your video work, Brenda! Does William work with you anymore? Hope he's doing well, too.
I hadn't noticed Baron. Looks much better. I've been wondering why you don't roach all 3 young horses. If my dad was still with us, he would like it. He roached all his young horses before he ever worked them. Talking about selling Baron's mane, I worked an auction a long time ago. This man had saved the tail off his first pony. Was tri_colored. It was around 60 yrs old. The tail sold for $75. You never know.
Another wonderful n Educational Video, I totally agree with roaching Barrons Mane, cooler in the summer n cleaner looking n No rubs from the Collar !!!👏👏
Brain's hair looks as it should. Most work horses have a shaved mane. He sure is pretty. Love your Sunbeam Clippers! Yep I used them on a dog too until I finally got a small set. I didn't think they made those clipmaster Clippers any more the set I have I'm thinking are close to 50 years old maybe? We always used them for clipping fetlocks and the mane on my mule and one Hackney cart pony we had. They later came in handy when my horse developed Cushings disease and had to be total body clipped in the summer. It's cherry and peach leaves that kill horses if a limb breaks off and the leaves are dying. The horses die from cyanide poisoning. Cut down all the cherry and peach trees near my fences. A friend of mine lost a nice pair of mules when a cherry tree limb broke off and was in his pasture. Keep those good videos coming ! ❤
He deserved a macho studly haircut... he's looking a tad girlie man. It hides his bid thick neck and detracts from the way his neck and shoulders tie in. He's a beautiful horse. His brothers are macho boys and his daughters are growing into working queens. Direct reflections of their human family. Wonderful husbandry.
God supplied man with the beast of the field. If this was not true then we humans would be in the field as well. I take great comfort that your horses have caring owners that make things better for the task they do. Yes, trimming the main is only logical and I've always known you care tremendously for your horses. I've never seen them complain, It's people that complain or should I say barn witches.
The mane's fly protection isn't by coverage. When they shake their head, the movement of the mane and forelock scares the flies from vulnerable areas like their eyes (it's one of the reasons cowboys would wear fringe on their chaps as the movement scared off flies) But if you're using fly spray every day or a face mask, then it doesn't matter whether or not they have a mane. With Jim's horses on his property, he sees them daily and can spray them as needed. It's different if you're boarding a horse and might not see them for several days or longer to fly spray them.
Roaching a young horse who has earned it is a right of passage for work horses and polo ponies. That is when they are ready to go pro. I look forward to roaching when I get my own place and they have a shed to hide in from the flies, well not my riding horse, she can keep her mane. For now they do need the protection from flies and they don't get used enough to worry about mane hair. Baron will look extra sharp at the next pull.
It's not creepy. Some people make jewelry out of by braiding it. Lots of people that have horses do it. And it's another tedious process to wash and dry it and then braid it into something.
I love to see Baron's beautiful blonde mane, it looked so beautiful against his lovely shiny chestnut coat, but I totally agree that when you care for animals you have to do whatever is best for them. Cutting off his mane is the best thing to keep him comfortable as he is working in his collar. He is such a beautiful horse with or without his long mane and this way is far more practical. Just one quick question, what causes red rot in trees and can it be prevented? You may have covered this in another video but I'm getting old and I have probably forgotten.
The Red Rot is caused by high wind that why you notice it sometimes higher up in the tree the fibers get stressed. 50 year ago I would hear elders call it wind shook and may notice it more on the face of the wood lot and where gets the dominant wind.
Unfortunately, everywhere is a flood area, its just how much water does it take to make it so. Streamer I watch in Vermont is stating all the rain there is making the low area bad. All the hurricane remnant appear to hitting you this year. Hopefully a break is coming.
I don't know if you have this tree in your area but here in Tennessee we have a small tree called Wild Cherry tree that produces very small black cherries kind of clustered on the branches in the spring. We can & have eaten the fruit however any livestock that eats any part of the tree will get sick & die. I hope you don't have any wild black cherry trees!

Barron is looking sharp with his new military haircut.
With Baron being a Stallion till over 3 years old, he developed a beautiful arched neck and roaching his mane has improved his look and also makes it easier to place and remove his collar. Jim is right Baron works daily in harness and it's easier to manage .
Baron is so handsome he would look good anyway
Barron is an amazingly beautiful horse.
I don't have any heartburn with a roached mane and because you don't dock their tails, you are my hero.❤
Good day, I was watching a video from the national Suffolk horse show, The lady at the breeding centre said boys get full body size at 6 years old but will continue to add muscle after this age, so Baron and boys have a bit to go both in body and in brain 😊Linda 🇬🇧

Baron is such a good horse . He trusts Jim
Man...Barron was being good for that haircut..Like..'I trust ya'. Lov to you all from South Alabama. SALUTE TO YOU BARRON.
It's so interesting to learn more in depth about your logging operation and the role the horses play in it.
Baron is one beautiful horse with or without the mane.
Baron looks very handsome, I for keeping your horses as comfortable as possible.
Love draft horses with their manes roached practical for both the owner and the horse. Look fabulous.
Jim, you can do whatever you want, it's your horse! Only one thing you can't do is sell him!😜! I love that horse!
Barry still looks fabulous even with his military cut😉
I LOVE the roached mane....he looks spectacular, as I knew he would.
Love Baron, a beautiful 🐎 horse.
The point about making it easier to put Baron's collar on make perfect logical sense to me. I've always thought Baron is a handsome lad, whether he has a long mane or a crewcut! I love the new harnesses, they really look great!
Baron is a beautiful horse, cutting his mane made him even more handsome😉
Thanks for answering so many questions!! I learned so much......
Wow! 6" of rain in a day, that is half our yearly rain fall. Mind blowing.
Very fine video. Baron is very fine. It is clear why he needs his hair cut. Thank you for showing the wear occurring under the collar.
Brenda & Jim, we honestly think that all of your horses are beautiful, but Baron is special. We totally understand why his mane had to go...& he's still a stunning looking horse. Would love a piece of his beautiful mane...love from Virginia!! 💕
Such a sweet face this horse has❤❤❤

Love the NEW LOOK!
What a kind eye and beautiful coat Baron has.
Thanks for the Q&A. I had forgotten about Earl working with Bill at the home wood lot.
Wow! Such a great informative video! Your a maverick Jim! Hope your beautiful garden is semi ok after the storm Brenda.
He is one amazing horse
Such a solid mind on this animal

Love the Gordon's!
Barbara
It is much easier to maintain and it won’t get stuck in the collar. He will be much more comfortable . That is important.
Baron, is a handsome horse 🐎 with or without a mane. I do like the mane off!

A question: What does the blisters on the tree look like when it is cut? Have you had any burl trees? Are they in high demand by your customers?
I want to say how fascinated I am at how your horses back up so well. It is one of my favorite things to watch when you are finagling carts and wagons and backing them into position, especially in the woods. Thank you for explaining why you cut the manes, that now makes very good sense, and that is again idea.
I love these question and answer sessions in your videos.
Agreed 100%
Thank goodness for your videos you and your wife are professional horse people thanks so much.
I like what you did with today's video Jim, answering questions and illustrating some with clips from a previous video. And you explained what you do with the trees that aren't good enough quality for selling.

What an amazing example of Baron’s trust in you. I always know Baron by the way he swings his hips as he walks.
He looks great! Sleek and shiny!

I am so happy for Baron! I thought he was suffering with the hot mane anyway and he looks so handsome.
Baron looks fine in his working-man haircut. Your horses all look strong and beautiful, and so well cared for. It's a pleasure to watch them work. Love your video work, Brenda! Does William work with you anymore? Hope he's doing well, too.

Love it Baron looks great❤
Baron is quite a stout team member. 😊

I agree Jim. The roach mane is better in every way❤ He has such shine and muscles. Do not cut Brenda's hair
❤😂😂😂.

🤔Grooming Baron 👏great reason explanation etc, follow up logging questions info interesting, Barons nice haircut 🤭 good video 👍👋

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I've always found the logging industry to be interesting.
Personally I think wanting Barons hair is creepy
I'd take the whole Baron myself haha
And may I say Baron was amazing during the process
It's not creepy. Some people make jewelry out of by braiding it. Lots of people that have horses do it. And it's another tedious process to wash and dry it and then braid it into something.
Some native Americans use horse hair in their dream Catchers. 😊😊😊

My grandfather did that to his horses. Barron looks official now! ❤
Baron is looking sharp
This has been a very informative video. Thanks Jim and Brenda!

Looks even better without it
The one thing myGrandpa and Dad would do periodically was, trim the manes and tails, and usually me too. 😂 😂😂
Good for the horse and good for you looking Sharp
Baron's got his big boy hair now, looks good!
