- Time for some Spring.....Er...a....Fall cleaning! We need to move the 7U D4 to make some room for working on lefty. Might as well warm it up and service the transmission and final drives. We discover some fuel and power issues on the 1952 Cat toolbar dozer D4 7U17655 W series with a D315 engine and electric start pony motor.
I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.
Regards,
Aaron & Greg "The Cleaner"

I think a good name for 7U would be Wheezy.
"Wheezy," I love it!

All i can say is.. more please!

Thanks for the video enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Now that was great, thanks you guys!
Anytime Tom, glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
She seemed to push pretty good, even if she was ailing a bit.
It should do really well when we got the fuel system ironed out! Thanks for watching
Ah nice, I enjoyed seeing you guys have some fun on 7U
It was fun to get it out on a nice day, 😊
Dad is all business!
Yes he is!
It's been 40 years since I bothered to have a battery in my D4. Starts on the second pull of the starter rope nearly every time. 6 volt batteries hardly turn the pony motor on a good day and never in cold weather. They are great machines. Interesting how many different types of dozers there were on these machines.
It's definitely hard to beat a pull start for reliability. We are definitely keeping the 4G, "Lefty" a pull start. Thanks for watching. 👍
I have the same dozer blade set up on my D4 7U
I wish I could find a toolbar with a ripper for it. They were a neat design.
@@lifeafterourloss funny I have been looking for three point parts and a PTO set up. I have seen a couple 7Us with three points and ripper set ups. I believe Wilcox and Rome made them as an add on, but I have had no luck finding one. I think I May have to fabricate something. The PTO is out there, just have to keep 👀. th-cam.com/users/attribution_link?a=NXJmkWBBb54lHQTZ&u=/watch%3Fv%3DuKeXFuAPc8U%26feature%3Dem-comments
A clean workplace is a happy workplace! You go Greg!
Pop does a pretty good job of blading
He was an operator for over 50 years. Mostly digging basements with wheel loaders. 👍
We always used a universal tool, a good hammer and a good chisel
Good that you worked it before draining the oils!
But it’s time for sing a long “ Mr Clean will clean your house so everything is shiny Mr Clean Mr Clean Mr Clean !”😀🇨🇦
Yep, we like to drain them warm from a good workout. Now I'm going to have the Mr Clean song stuck in my head. Especially every time dad picks up a spray bottle and a rag, 😂!
The old man must have some blade hours he ain't afraid to "manipulate" that blade lever ... wow
I’m from Alabama and I work at a John Deere dealership for 35 years now and I really love your videos I get a lot from them I like old stuff keep it up and I will keep watching
Thanks Tony, we appreciate the support. More videos are in the pipeline
Another fine video. I drill the brake compartment plugs and install cotter pins in the drilled holes this is no problem unless your working in the worst conditions condensation will drain out also oil leaking from the other compartments can save the brakes from contamination.
Thanks! In the dry desert environment where we are, I don't think water will be an issue if I leave the plugs as is. The cotter pins are a great idea!
the little hole in the plug is to let moisture out. It is small enough to not allow critters to get in. Put a cotter key in the hole and bend the legs to allow the key to rotate. Motion of the tractor keeps the key turning and keep the hole open.
I was lucky enough to learn that recently. I will definitely leave them open and do just that with the cotter pin. 👍
Finally someone who does a pony motor start without making it look like launching a Space X rocket.
Yep, it is alway fun to watch you guys. I never new there were drain plugs for the brakes, i will have to look at mine.
It is amazing how much grease and oil can accumulate in those compartments. We noticed on 5T which came from a wetter climate they left the plugs out all together. Most of the oil is spill over from oiling the throwout bearings on the steering clutches. But if there's any seepage from the transmission, rear end or even the final drives it can end up in that compartment. If water seeps in from the top cover or around the inspection covers it will also go into that compartment. When we took apart 4G those compartments literally had gallons of water in them. At the time it was below zero out in the shop and I ended up breaking ice with a hammer. Most of that was from the tractor sitting outside for decades and water seeping in from above. That's also what rusted and froze the steering clutches. As always appreciate you watching and hope everything's going well with your D4!
Definitely have to be a octopus to run one of those old girls.
These D4 7u videos are gold. I just bought a 1955 7u, currently frozen in the earth, that I am working to get home. Mine has solid front wheels and the blade mounting system looks to be a two-part design, the blade pivots on a center pin. Quick mount, I suppose. Besides verifying there was engine oil, I am flying blind.
Sounds like you might have an early 6-way blade. Hopefully you can bring it back to life! Appreciate the kind words. I'm glad you're enjoying the content. 😊
ive got 2 D47Us for sale,,5000 or so hrs,,,run well, winches,,,one has rare factory Cat cab if anyone is interested,,,north alabama here
Yep, ummhumm, I like mustard and French fries.
I reckon them french fried taters is good eatin, ummhumm! 🤣 Glad someone got the reference, lol! 👍
Good nickname is 7 up lol
That's a good one too! 😊
The D4 7U gearbox oil looked exactly how my own crawlers oil looked like. Very milkshake like material and god knows how long it had been there. Since there where no metal or concerning mystery parts inside the oil of 7U the machine is fine to use as it is. Servicing a old CAT with modern CAT things is kind of stylish. I think you also need new hydraulic hoses cause the ones that I could see in the video have huge cracks and are slightly concerning me in terms of safe use. The other concern is the starting engine back lash that may indicate the bearings are way out hopefully it has not taken the bearing housing+race with it. When thinking back on Toby's D2 starting engines that was one of the major issues with the housings+ water jacket cracking.
The hoses are on the long list for replacement. Fortunately we had a lot of cat oil from our old Excavating days. Thanks again for watching!
Doesn’t sound the best it needs put in maintenance next thanks for sharing
Yep, she has no power. Terrible miss in the engine. Thanks again for watching, 👍
Not anything that can't be fixed..
