    here's the story of how I got into NYU; essays, teacher references, extracurricular activities and GPA included. If you're applying to NYU or to another college I hope this video is helpful! Keep in mind that admissions varies by school and applicant so what worked for me in terms of stats, activities and other application components may not be right for you. Be yourself throughout the application process, and if colleges don't buy what you're selling, maybe it's just not a good fit. Good luck seniors who are working on their essays, and to those of you who haven't yet started, this is your reminder to make the rest of your summer productive!
    sorry in advance for the atrocious coloring in this video ://
    I'm still working out my camera settings, the lighting kept changing and I apparently decided to play around with final cut pro so that's that

    i think it might be super hard for a student under an educational system far different from the us to get in any us college. here in brazil extracurriculars or individuality, leadership and iniciative are not encouraged in the same way. we only have three years of highschool. rarely a school will offer classes that transcend the mandatory curriculum (in which, btw, every student takes the same classes, and the level in which the class is presented depends on the teacher rather than student's placement on that subject or something).
    idk. it feels impossible to get there

      I feel you! I was in the French system before switching to an IB school. In the French system, there is barely an emphasis on extracurriculars. You also don't have a lot of time to do them, as you start early, and you finish late.

    • @sophielogy
      @sophielogy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      try to understand why you failed. What subjects were harder than others? Where might you need help/extra support? I think mindset is really key. Instead of telling yourself "I'm not smart," try thinking "I'm good at x class, but I could improve my knowledge of x subject." I would also try to meet with teachers, study with a peer or classmates if that's helpful for you, maybe tutoring/extra classes as well.

      I was terrible at history but I was always placed in AP history. I was terrible, I found out was because I wan't putting 100% into it. I went from having 70s and 80s (out of 100) to having 95 or above. It is a mind thing, where you feel as if the information is useless but if you block those thoughts then you should do excellent in the classes.

    Do they have good acting/film programs??? How does living in New York actually feel besides the “romanticizing” aesthetic?? I’ve also never had any official grade lower than a 70 (I average between 80s-90s but math is the only subject that gets me 70s) does that count as “good grades”??

    • @sophielogy

      I believe they're some of the best! It really depends on you, and what your lifestyle is like. For me, it doesn't feel romanticized, especially after living here for some time. The issue with applying early decision from Australia is that you’ll need to submit a Predicted ATAR (final school result), because the application will actually need to be submitted before we sit exams haha. Talk to your schools career councillor abt it.

    (I swear if this seems like I'm flexing it doesn't mean to be, I'm lame compared to some of these amazing people in the comments)
    Hi! My dream is to go to NYU and I was wondering about essays. Would it help if I focused on my prepared major? It's history, and I'm volunteering at several heritage sites and historic preservation sites, along with smaller, less focused on community shelters. I'm a writer, as well, and I'm publishing the first novel in a *time* travel series I'm working on, which (obviously) delves on past events. I'm Canadian and taking challenge courses, and my grades in history are at a 95 grade average, and so far I'm on honour roll and my school's Principal List, which includes students of a 91 grade average and over. I'm in eighth grade and just started high school this year. One day, when the time comes, I hope to apply to the College of Arts and Sciences, like you! I was wondering if the admissions board will see this as impressive if I continue on this path (hopefully with more extracurriculars after COVID) because so many incredible people apply each year and I have no way of knowing how the admissions board will know I'm aiming for a history major unless I focus on it in my essays. Also, would talking about my novels be necessary? Would it help they are focused on history? I understand I seem ahead of myself, but this college and history is my dream! Let me know if this is at all promising lmao.

      I heard that as well before applying but it wasn't the case for me. I didn't get a full-ride or a very large scholarship but it was enough to make the school more affordable. I would say that if you have enough financial need, your application is good, and your grades are above average, you could receive a scholarship. From my experience, financial aid seems to be one of NYU's ways of recruiting top international students who might otherwise not attend.

      Hi! GPA is a grade point average. It's essentially your average grade across classes. In the US it is on a scale of 4.0 (as opposed to 10 or 20 in some places of Europe). Your school should be able to help you calculate it. The SAT is a standardized test that students take to get into US colleges. There are a lot of resources available online about it! I personally didn't take it so I'm not the best resource, but I would check online or with your school.
