  • At Economy Candy, a third-generation shop on Manhattan's Lower East Side, it's impossible not to feel like a kid in a candy store, faced with thousands of varieties of sweets. Correspondent Martha Teichner reports.

    When I was a kid in the late 70s, there was a real, old-fashioned, penny candy store around the corner from my house in Westerly, R.I. called Munsells. Old Mr. Munsell who had to have been close to 90, had run the store since he opened it back in the 1920s. It was just like you'd see in the movies, truly. Old-fashioned glass display cases were full of glass jars with every kind of candy you could imagine. Little paper bags, you could load up for a dollar or so. They had some regular groceries as well, but for me, it was heaven. I was so lucky to have been able to experience a place like that during a time when those kinds of places were a rarity. To be a kid again.

      A little paper bag loaded up at Economy Candy would probably set you back $40. You can’t go home again.

    It was a great segment. I live in New York and I didn't know about this place I will definitely go check it out. It's great to see family-owned company last for so long, and be so loved by so many. 🍬

    Martha asking the little girl if she likes coming to the Candy Shop everyday and the girl almost replying "what kind of question is that?!" 🤣
    What a great segment this was for the inner child!

    Gasp! My brother brings me Japanese Kit Kats when he comes home, and I had no idea some places have them here in the States! I want to get on a plane right now...

    • @ThePerksdeLeSarcasmeSiorai
      @ThePerksdeLeSarcasmeSiorai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can now find Japanese Kit Kat chocolates in many Asian markets across America, not just this NYC candy shop. I can easily spot them at Korean markets (H-Mart is expanding everywhere now), Vietnamese markets, markets in Chinatowns, and other Japanese franchise stores across many US states like Daiso and Mitsuwa Marketplace. And I don’t even live in California or Hawaii where there are lots of Japanese.
      I even buy things like kamaboko and konnyaku on bi-weekly basis.
      Of course not every flavor of Japanese Kit Kat is available (hello, there are about 200 of them) but you’ll surely find matcha and strawberry flavors. You just need to venture more and know where to get them.

    They even have my childhood favorite : Blackjack gum! The licorice flavored gum that makes your tongue black. And they have just about every type of candy that I would buy as a kid in the 1950's from long gone Sid s Candy Store on Avenue P and east Third Street in Brooklyn.

    Unfortunately, the best item Economy Candy used to have, Rocky Road Chocolate, is no more. There were two varieties, dark and milk chocolate. It was sold by the pound, and came in large blocks, which were cut to the customer's order. The story goes, that the candy was so irresistible, the staff got addicted and ate more than it sold. So, it was discontinued, sometime in the 70s, and is now a part of history and nostalgia for us old folks.

    Great story. Just want to personally add that I lost 90 pounds in 2017 by going on a No Sugar, No Flour diet. I haven't had any sugar 5 years. And I've never regretted it. Candy tastes great. But it isn't worth it for my healthy. Not even in moderation.
