I've been wanting to interview Japanese snack makers and shokunin (craftsmen) for a long time and it's finally happening! Midori Seika makes wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) in a specific category called half-wet confectionary (han namagashi), which means they contain 10-30% moisture. Their jelly candies are made with agar and are much softer in comparison to typical gummy candies made with gelatin.

I love watching these videos. I lived in Japan years ago, and one of the big things I miss (besides my friends) is the attention to detail and genuine pride craftsmen in Japan had for their work. From small shops to people working sales for major corporations, there was a real sense of responsibility and desire to do their best. That work ethic just does not seem to be as ubiquitous here in the US :(
I'm so glad you're sharing products like this to the wider world, so that people can support these Japanese businesses and help keep traditions alive.

@@TheUltimate63 I miss my grandma. She passed away just shy of 80+ years old due to stomach cancer. It is nice to know yours still healthy enough to do so. On the other hand, I am in my 40s but feeling twice my age (due to stress) ^_^;..

That kitty going for and chomping on the grain was hillarious! Those jellies look so good. I love gummi bears, but they are very stiff. The softer candy with agar looks yummi. Only they are so expensive!
Poki is an extremely ravenous boy, so I am not surprised he chomped on that rice. That beast will eat ANYTHING edible; during the natto beans episode, he absolutely INHALED the bean he was offered despite natto being quite smelly. Love that rowdy little guy.
These videos are so heart achingly wholesome. Thank you Sakuraco for blessing Jun(And Rachel) with this chance. Thank you Midori Seika for letting Jun bring us along! It brings me such joy and peace watching these in a world so consumed with unrest and focus upon the bad. I've tasted Japanese gummy before and it is soft, chewy and very good. Each pieces is beautiful and artistic. The package is beautifully wrapped as well. Btw your cat never looked so good.
Woaaah, that is amazing. In UK (where I live) companies usually rush so much and they don't really care how it looks as long as it look like a standard (low standard), but in Japan, they take their time to make it as perfect as possible. It's amazing. I have such a high respect for Japan.
Is that why a lot of people around the world like Japan's product(s)?
@@hanna_noYeah. Japan is known for expensive products, but they tend to also be of very high quality and they also compensate workers well. The CEOs tend to have a great sense of responsibility to their company, clients, and employees as well (some have taken pay cuts during hard time for example). Of course there's outliers and the products do need to be made in Japan, not just by a Japanese company, but this is a reputation Japanese products and companies have.
I'm also from the UK and I think this is an unfair comment. There are plenty of equally high end food and other goods in the uk. You can't compare mass produced goods to traditional craftsmanship. There are plenty of amazing British goods if you only care to look.
@@DavidCruickshank That's the issue though, you have to look. In Japan it's as common as dirt.
Not saying there aren't traditions and craftsmanship in the U.K or anywhere else than Japan, and those that do it deserve every bit of accolade and prayers of success.
But via mass production and industries cheaping out (for many different reasons, all avoidable IMO), it's becoming the exception, not the norm.

Jelly candy are my favorite type of candy just cuz it's texture and taste. I would love to eat these just for it's cuteness(the thumbnail with cute designs and cats brought me here immediately)

This is a cool way to work with a brand... You have an influencer not only show the product but, have them show where the products comes from and who makes it... I can't wait to see more of these...

I pray that I find a job that I love as much, that even when I am older, I wouldn’t mind putting in the same hours. What an amazing place to work! I loved seeing the clip of you trying your hand at pressing/stamping! It really puts into perspective how talented the shokunin are and how many hours in practice it takes before you're able to create an acceptable product. Thanks for another cool look into traditional Japanese candy making! I can see why the kohaku candy are trending right now but I personally love the look of the original candy style (9:40); they are so colorful!

As someone in the food industry, I love this stuff. I've only really worked for large plants and companies, so to see the craftsmanship in these smaller places is great. Everywhere I've been has everything mechanized to the point where they just have a few people to make sure nothing breaks down and it's all produced in batches on the hundreds or thousands of pounds at a time, so seeing this is very refreshing.

I've been doing sakuraco for like 3 months and I'm super excited for this month's box, the little bunny dish looks so cute! It's become a fun little thing I share with my sister (who gets het own box) and my best friends whenever I get a new box 😊
WOW, I had no idea kohakutou were all the way from the Edo period! Wild to think how such an old candy is so popular online now hahaha. This was so nice to see it being made

This is one of the only times I've actually enjoyed eating ASMR with that Kohaku sugar. I have a lot of frustrating food allergies, but this is one of the few times I've been really interested in the snack boxes despite it. Also watching Poki go nuts for that rice was hilarious.
If I were to see these I would think they were machine made. To see the care, thought, and love they put into the design along with the hard work, is amazing. It makes me want to go and see the store just to marvel at the details they put into their candy. Thank you so much for sharing!
As someone who usually hates anything jelly like I was amazed to find out I actually like this type of confectionary in a sakura co box a couple months ago. Having them explain the difference in this video makes so much sense now! I wish they made stuff like this here in Canada!
Oh, I listen to a lot of ASMR and some channels I've followed actively have made videos with this candy theme. It was surprising to hear about it here being such a big driver of sales. :D

I like that the chairman is right in the factory working with everyone else, instead of being in an office doing nothing. That's the kind of company anyone would be happy to work for.

What a lovely and amazing video!! The 92yo manager reminds me so much of my Opa, who was still playing the piano accordion at 92 and helping out with reading groups at my old school. He sadly passed away (peacefully) this year- (At age 97) and its so lovely to see how his legacy plays out. Wishing great endurance and peace to this 92 year old in his great career

I want that Kohaku sugar so badly now. I’ve never seen candy that looks so beautiful and satisfying before, and I’m so happy that it doesn’t have gelatin in it! It’s so hard to find good soft/gummy candy that’s suitable for vegans.

I love how casual this doc feels. I dislike the notion some westerners have of Japanese people being extremely formal, humourless and unfriendly. Seeing you make small jokes with the workers and how, despite being in their workplace, they didn't mind you "interrupting" to ask questions and being genuinely interested in their craft really warmed my heart. Thank you for your informative yet down to Earth interviews.

How amazing! I love the attention to detail and creativity that goes into the designs. Creating intricate sweets is such a labor of love - I am currently learning to make traditional Chinese moon cakes myself. People always ask why I don't just buy things cheaply from the store. But understanding how something is made and connecting to that process, whether by doing it yourself or going behind the scenes like this, offers an unparalleled appreciation for things it's otherwise so easy to take for granted.
