I find it hard to imagine that people would consider "this game stinks" to be bad marketing. it was the 90s. We ate that stuff up.
Yeah, that's just what people have been saying but it's not true. The real reason why the game bombed was that it only came in a giant box w the players guide and cost way more than a regular snes game at the time

My brother and I actually loved the “This Game Stinks” marketing. We put the scratch and sniff cards on the fan to smell up the whole room lol. This game is my favorite RPG of all time and I was glad to learn some tricks to beat it a lil easier next run.
I’m just mad it took 30 years to learn the water Kraken doesn’t drop Gutsy Bat. Hours were spent trying to find it that way 🙁

Ugh, I'm so glad to finally be playing this game! I remember playing a few fights on my friends SNES as a kid, but never had it myself. Absolutely loving what I've played so far.

Minor, nitpicky correction:
The first Megalovania was the Halloween Hack one. The Homestuck version was a remix with live guitar layered in.
Oh yeah, and shouts to all the CogDis folks out there... its version is a fan remix that Toby Fox enjoyed and allowed to be used, and was intended as a reference to Halloween Hack... All of these were before Undertale was released. If you've played all these titles, maybe you can see the influences each had on one another!

In all fairness, I could see it from its name in Mother 1, Geigue or "geeg". Still, I pronounce it as "guy-gus", so take that as you will.

Childhood memories. I remember being a kid and renting this at the video store that was down the road from my parents house when I was 7. Such a beautiful game and fantastic series.

i always remembered playing earthbound on my snes growing up. it was when i completed it for the first time that i truly loved the game. ever since then, every once in a blue moon, i get the urge to play and complete earthbound again. its usually done by a trigger. whether its randomly thinking about the game's music or seeing something remotely related to earthbound, youtube video or not. i even remember how many times i've played and beaten the game. nintendo announcing it for the switch was my trigger to play and beat earthbound for the 16th time in my life. will always and forever cherish the game in my heart

It’s such a great and unique game, when I think of urban RPG’s the mother series is always number 1. Can’t wait for you to do Mother 3 the best in the series. I hope one day there is a continuation of this wonderful franchise.
There won't be. Itoi made those games for his daughter and she's an adult now. He said himself he doesn't want to get into game development ever again. He said that Mother 4 is our real world, us living with the memories of the Mother games.
As kids when the video store across town had their going out of business sale my bro and I snatched this up along with the guide! Renting it for a day or 2 was such a tease. It was so incredible to get to play through every bit of it. Best game ever

most of these are minor nitpicks, but worth mentioning imo:
Lots of people have pointed out it's not Jiggus, but to inform you -- The most common/widely accepted pronunciations for the main antagonist are "Ghee-gus" or "Guy-gus". I personally say Ghee-gus since he originated from the alien Gyiyg (pronounced "gheeg") in Mother 1. I think it would've been nice to talk about the connection between Mother 1 & 2, but I liked that you at least discussed cognitive dissonance.
Not including the abortion theory was a big big miss.
Shigesato Itoi also says "I miss you" in Smiles and Tears, not just the "ok desu ka".
Magicant is also a Mother stage within the Smash series, not just Onett & Fourside.
I think it would've been cool to point out as an iceberg topic that through the Smash 64 bios we learn that Ness apparently learned PK Fire and PK Thunder from his friends after the events of EarthBound. He couldn't actually use those attacks in his own game, so in Smash they actually expanded upon the lore by including that he learned the moves from his friends. He also couldn't use Starstorm either, that was Poo's signature move. But the way you worded it, it kind of sounded like it was Ness' attack all along. In the latest Smash, Poo & friends show up during Ness' PK Starstorm to help him.
There are things of Ness' that the party can stumble upon in Mother 3. I think that should have been included.
I don't mean to be nitpicky, I'm just a very big, lifelong EarthBound fan who really loved the game growing up & knows it inside and out. I even wrote a song about the game. Especially with a game that has such a dedicated fandom such as this, details like these that might seem minor to you might be big misses to others, especially when you're calling it an iceberg video. Still appreciated the nostalgia trip & wish you the best in your content creation journey. I subbed.
Additionally, since we are talking about "proper" ways of saying things (in the end, whatever your head canon states), I was always under the impression that it was "one"-'et", because of the four towns being "one"-ett, "two"-son, "Three"-"d", and "four"-"side", "sum"-"ers" and "ten"-"da" - being "one, two, three, four, sum, ten".

I didn't notice that while watching the video, likely because of the other things I DID notice (🤣) but that's totally true. a lot of people do say "oh-nett" so I think it's somewhat more forgiveable than Jiggus for Giygas. but yeah, the numerical nomenclature thing was definitely on purpose.

I remember my parents bought me this game back in 1995 or so. The game was still relatively new and I absolutely adored it as a kid, and I couldn't even tell you why. There was something just awesome about it that made me want to play the game.
Ness's sister is Tracy with their parents Ness's Mother and Ness's Father. Ness and Tracy's pet dog is King. Ness's friends are Paula Polestar, Jeff Andonuts and Poo.

The first time I'd ever played Earthbound, I'd been hit hard with this odd nostalgia. I was in my late teens, emulating it on ZSNES, but it feels like a game I'd played ever since my mom gave me permission to use her SNES. I may not be a Mother fanatic, but I've had a lot of fun with the series since I'd gotten into it. And dare I say it, Mother fans are a worthy contender and veritable apex to Sonic fans for devotion and talent, don't @ me.
When you see the vast amount of shit this game has influenced, especially influential games like Yume Nikki or Undertale I'm bound to agree

Well, when you consider when Homestuck came out, and when Toby joined the team... It's wrong. This version of Megalovania was the first, while the Homestuck version was a remix.

I don't believe that the Mother series received a popularity boost just because of Smash. Sure, I myself just knew the series because of Smash, but F-Zero was also only really "introduced" to people in Smash, and it is not as popular as the Mother series itself. This becames interesting when you think that F-Zero even has more launched titles than the Mother series.
So, Mother has some merit on it.
I've played the game on SNES on a rent. I wanted to buy it but never found, then ZSNES appeared (yes, the same time PSX and N64 launched) and then I've finished this game so many times. I love it so much, its cute, terrifying at some points and creative, because I wasn't used to modern-era style environment RPGs.
Heads up, "desu" is pronounced with an e sound like the e in "best", and the u isn't really spoken, kinda cut off. Hope that's helpful!
Also, "Ok desu ka" doesn't mean "got it". It means "Is this ok?". Guy didn't even bother to do a quick translation.

A few additional factoids that could potentially go on the iceberg:
- After it came out and flopped financially in America, EarthBound was relegated to the bargain bin at local department stores that sold video games, like Wal-Mart and Best Buy and sold for prices as low as five dollars.
- Paula's characterization in the American version differs from how she's portrayed in the original Japanese version. While in the American version Paula is portrayed as kind-hearted but capable of defending herself if necessary, the Japanese version portrays her as more submissive and cowardly. The game's translator Marcus Lindblum disliked how she was written in Japan and had her written to be more confident and headstrong.

If Nintendo evere gets the balls to remake Earthbound they should use that craft style, imagine how cool it'd be to see those clay models used in the marketing as 3d models in the game, not to mention how cool Giygus could potentially look alongside the battle backgrounds which could be made even more trippy.
