- The priestess Norma leads her people in a prayer for peace. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role in Bellini's masterpiece, with the Royal Opera Chorus and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House conducted by Antonio Pappano, recorded September 2016. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/...
Bellini’s bel canto masterpiece Norma had its premiere at La Scala, Milan, on Boxing Day 1831. After a muted initial response the opera quickly became popular, and is now a mainstay of the repertory. Norma is perhaps most acclaimed as a vehicle for the lead soprano, most famously now by such 20th-century greats as Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé and Joan Sutherland. Indeed, Bellini provides some astonishing vocal fireworks for his title character - most famously ‘Casta diva’, Norma’s Act I hymn to the chaste moon, and Act II’s ‘Dormono entrambi’, as she contemplates the unthinkable act of killing her children. But the opera’s dramatic potency rests in its breathtaking ensembles, most strikingly in Norma’s duets with Pollione and Adalgisa, the Act I trio ‘Vanne, sì: mi lascia, indegno’ and the blistering Act II finale.
This new production of Norma was The Royal Opera’s first in nearly thirty years. Directing is Àlex Ollé, of the Catalan collective La Fura dels Baus, reunited with the creative team behind his acclaimed production of Oedipe. They give Norma a contemporary setting against a backdrop of a cruel civil war, and focus on the opera’s exploration of the conflict between an individual’s own desires and those of her society - and of religion as a force for unity and for destruction.

Yes …my sentiments exactly…. I go go into swoon when I hear Calls sing this… she is a goddess ❤
This aria, Casta Diva, is one of my favourite music pieces. I have been adoring Montserrat Caballe in her 1974 performance. Then I come upon this. Sonya Yoncheva, a lovely lyrical soprano, and a soulful rendering. What joy!!

Oui Montserrat d accord!

Sonya sings ths piece with such grace and elegance. It thrills me to listen to her lovely bell like voice.
This was one of my greatest experience to be able to see this opera live in London 2016.
We do not have to compare live with TH-cam recording. These are totally different.
Thank you Sonya and Royal Opera House.
Now I 'm waiting for having the CD.
our Bulgarian Sonya is a phenomenal
I am so happy to see talented Bulgarians being appreciated! Sonya is a beautiful singer!
She is, but not a great Norma.
I hope the Royal Opera House are making a blu-ray recording of this production available for purchase because it was FANTASTIC!

Just pleased to find a world where there are still people who care enough about this to think it matters, and to have an opinion they feel sufficiently worthwhile to bear expression.
Of course Callas and Caballe and Dame Joan set a pretty high bar.
Amazing soprano - young velvety voice with great penetrating power, especially for those who were lucky to watch it live. Thoroughly enjoyable performance, majestic settings with a contemporary message. What's this nostalgia for paganism below... we've had enough religious inspirations(for the scene) in recent centuries.

I really like her performance. I’ve heard Callas. Amazing.Montserrat, Sutherland. Great, no question about it. But this feels more on point, with the text, the character and the moment in the opera. That’s how I feel. She seems to hold herself in a proper way.
More on point? That's simply nonsense. It is fine singing, but to say that it is "more on point" than Maria Callas? Nonsense.
@@kbhprinsesse Amen!!! No comparison to Callas, not bad for this era though jejejeje
@@kbhprinsesse I dont actually like Callas’ voice for this aria
@@lefinlay no matter if you like it or not, objectively speaking on musicological terms, Callas' rendition of it is vastly superior to that of modern singers like Yoncheva, Bartoli etc., both on a technical and interpretational level.
@@kbhprinsesse that’s objectively wrong 😂
Marvelous, exceptional! Proud of You Sonya! Pleasure to listen to You! Norma reborn in London at last....
very VERY dynamic and musical, with a pleasant tone, and FOR ONCE FINNAALLLYY a singer who doesn't need to force to achieve a good dramatic volume.
Either that or she has a good mic...
only just come across this. this is a voice for the ages. timely aria too.
I've loved opera since I was a kid, but I've never been a fan of "Casta Diva". Overly melismatic, long, too slow, too many yellable high notes. But then... I heard THIS. Sonya Yoncheva's interpretation is mezmerizing... beautiful resounding voice with no shadow of a yell. On "A noi volgi il bel sembiante..." I always melt like an ice-cream. (2:42) Masterpiece!
Have you heard Monserrat Cabelle’s version? It’s stunning!
This music is so potent. Moving. Emotional. Spiritual. That's all before I found out the meaning behind the lyrics (I sadly don't speak Italian). And then I read the notes from the channel. Such a timeless challenge. Thank you Sonya for the way you sing and act. And thank you to all who made this recording possible. Peace.
I love her singing. Her style. Her voice. Her acting.
A beautiful rendition and an amazing production. Remember, no operatic production should remain the same. Nothing is bad; just different. That's what makes opera so exciting and embracing.
"Nothing is bad" - nice one.
What a beautiful voice - so natural and unforced - and great production too!
I just love her. She has a gorgeous voice! I just love it.
Callas was divine, but Yoncheva is also a perfect singer for Bellini
She sang this beautifully. This part, especially....I melted: 3:31

totally agree!
SIMPLE PERFECT, HER INTERPRETETION IS DIVINE. THE WAY SHE MANAGE HER VOICE AND AT THE SAME TIME REFLECT SO MUCH FEELING. I THINK IS ONE OF THE BEST INTERPRETATION OF THIS AREA IN OPERA HISTORY. BRAAAAVAAAAAA!!!
Sorry to say this, but you should learn about singing and music before saying that this is historic performance. She did what she could and this is perfect, but common, she is one of today sopranos, and tenors, and baritones, and opera in general... Poor, please don't talk if you don't know what you're talking about. This performance is simply the best of what today you can get. Not even, but by far far far away the best performance. Acting is important in opera, but the voice and the technique, and musical accuracy is much much important.
Since the likes of Sutherland and Caballé in their last performances of this role in the 80's, I'm pretty sure I have not heard a better "Casta diva", with such good dynamics, sensitive phrasing, even legato, youthful yet mature sound, solid voice from top to bottom, accurate vocal scales, and distinctive, unique sound and interpretation, no "wannabe". Yoncheva more than ever amazes me in this interpretation. "Casta diva" can be well sung by many, but it needs a great performer to make one sit and listen mesmerized.
Homoclassicus what a name! Homo classicus
Agree!!
I thought I was going to be very impressed with this when she began, but as it went on I found her a little dull. There isn't enough life in her prayer, it seems formulaic and I have to disagree with you about the dynamics. In the high notes there seems to be not enough power in the voice. In the lower register, sure, it's there, and maybe she just needs more time for her voice to mature. Her acting is a little dull too, no matter how sincere she is. I'm not mesmerised at all by this performance. She does not seem to be sending up a prayer, but simply trying to sing correctly. Sorry to disagree but I can't get excited by her.
Eccellente realizzazione. Stupenda cantante. Ottima pronuncia italiana senza accenti.
Bravi!!!
She is a Maria Callas " light" very very good! The first singer in many years that don't over do it in Casta Diva. Brava!
My favorite version of this aria... it's absolutely outstanding... ❤❤❤❤
Thanks ROH for this unforgettable evening last year! Congratulations on your casting, conducting, performance, scenery and all. You've given us much joy!
I was lucky enough to see this production at the ROH. It was stunning. Don't forget that Sonya Yoncheva replaced Anna Netrebko that cancelled 2 months before opening night. It was a very gutsy move for Sonya Yoncheva. Now ROH time for a revival of this interesting production. Maybe Rebeka and Deshayes ?
Meravigliosi brani ascoltati !!!
Grazie 🎼📚🌹👍
Its truly amazing peace and absolutely outstanding singer ❤️
Bravo Sonia . I also love her interpretation of Tosca. I think she's my favourite colouratura now
She sings nicely here and very aptly. If she can manage Norma's rage as well, then we've got a winner. It is, however, something of a shame that the production team thought they were staging Don Carlos that evening; but I applaud Yoncheva for carrying on despite the mishap. Brava.
The Catholic symbolism doesn't work in a story about Druids and a Druid priestess. Please save us from Regie Opera stage designers.
This performance is the best Norma I've heard in last 10 - 20 years
she sings this with great ease instead of the great struggle it usually is sung with
Absolutely stunning, love her sweet bel canto style of singing!
gosh this comes straight from heaven. I mean her voice. I have watched all the others on TH-cam. and she has the most wonderful voice of them all. it is is so spiritual and beautiful. thanks for she did it so emotional and didn't put all her power into it like the other great singers
A Catholic priestess praying to the moon. Yoncheva is amazing as always.
you might see catholic priestesses in the near future
That isn't the issue here.
I get you, but I still like it.
not according to this Pope
Just in your imagination Norma is a Catholic priestess. She is a Druid priestess. The staging is misleading.
Wonderful voice and wonderful performance of "Casta Diva". The symbolism of the waving incence burner reminds me to a church service in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which I was able to attend at the end of a long pilgrimage.
Thank you for this excellent recording and the sign of peace. 🕊🙏
Sonya Yoncheva will be the next great diva of our generation. What a fantastic voice and interpretation! just listening she transmits so much!
operaperu I totally agree. Singing ins about communication and this is why Sonya is such a great interpreter of the great opera roles. This season she has wowed the Met in la traviata and next season I am sure she will do the same in Tosca. When she returns to Norma at the ROH the tickets will be like gold dust. I might add that the video does not do justice to the stunning stage set and costumes that were equally breathtaking.
You must be kidding? Have you ever heard or better, listened to belcanto (any role) in the past?! Poor technique, poor phrasing. She is no drammatico-coloratura!
She doesn't understand what She is singing! Completly without soul. Listen to the great Norme, Callas and Caballè!
Anita Cerquetti forever!
Anita Cerquetti,
I saw the performance on 4 October and it was absolutely phenomenal! Given the reviews (which clearly one must learn to ignore) I found the staging simply outstanding! Sonya's performance was breath-taking. I hope it will be released on DVD soon.
Totally agree. I was at the 4 October performance and it was simply amazing.
A beautiful, beautiful voice. The actual tone and sound of it is pleasant. (Half the time it seems like that's not the case for opera singers.)
Don't understand why ROH hasn't brought this production back in recent years (and ideally Sonya Yoncheva). I'd been waiting a long time for a fabulous Norma and this was finally it.
Such a beautiful voice can sing this Aria … Whenever İ hear this Aria İ get emotional
🙏🙏👏👏❤️🌺
Talk to me, my angel. Talk to me. I could just dive in to this stream of bliss. There is a light in the end of the tunel.
She makes us so happy and peaceful
Wonderful singing! It was a thoroughly enjoyable performance. Cannot believe the 'educated troll' below!?! THANK you ROH and Yoncheva for the joy you brought to us. Looking forward for more
Oh my, so beautiful. Your Norma made me cry. ❤

Le timbre est exceptionnel de toute beauté
LOVED her voice and performance. Btw - why is a druid priestess wearing a Christian-themed robe with crosses on it.....
Absolutely wonderful singing! An interpretation that is mystical and enchanting. BRAVO !

Simply stunning. This is the greatest staging and singing I have seen in 40 years. I have had the luck to see this opera at The Royal Opera House. Tickets have been like gold dust. I believe a DVD is promised. Anyone who loves opera, theatre, musicals, and spectacle should make sure they see this landmark production. I just wish the BBC would screen it at Christmas because the general public could then enjoy the riches of the World's greatest opera house at its finest. Congratulations to everyone involved in this production.
Yes. This production is staggering. If your production has a Space Hopper in it then I will concede it might be as good 😁
Talks about best Norma, then mentions the fraud Bartoli and her mini Norminetta. You seem to really know your stuff, don't you lol
OK I saw it on 4 October and I didn't know what to make of the Space Hopper and the TV thing but it all made sense after the second bottle of red wine at the restaurant later 😀... Looking forward to Otello!
christian maeder - you are talking about recordings (albeit live) and what is on TH-cam. Mark (and I) saw this performance live at the ROH so we are allowed to comment on what we saw for real. I cannot comment on Bartoli's take as I have not seen her performing Norma live. If we are comparing Casta Diva 'clips' on TH-cam I think Anna Netrebko's trumps Caballe's by a long mile!!!
Are you joking? :) Netrebko with her messy coloratura and inadequate (for Bellini phrases) breath control trumps Caballe in Orange and Bolshoi 1974?? Netrebko's timbre is beautiful and she looks gorgeous on stage, but singing-wise she's miles below Caballe.
What a setting! BEAUTIFUL!
It always surprises me when certain fans of opera insist on absolute word-for-word faithfulness to the libretto. How can anyone so literal-minded get anything at all out of an artform that is inherently so stylised, so symbolic, so nonsensical? How do they not spend the whole time screaming, "BUT WHY ARE THEY SINGING?!?!"
I thought the whole show was great, and Yoncheva is terrific.
I was lucky enough to see it at the ROH on 4 October in a box opposite the platform she stood on singing Casta Diva. She was absolutely stunning. Given all the reviews (which clearly one must learn to ignore) I found the staging spectacular. You are right, some people prefer to be spoon-fed the same everything time and time again - 'but why aren't they wearing Druid robes' I heard. Not to mention some people continue to compare a studio recording to a live performance! I loved the performance, the pace, the tension, the drama - it was phenomenal!
camstilton I agree that the singer was terrific. But I don't agree that opera is an nonsensical and stilised art form. For me it is always a question while I try to watch some drama "Why don't they sing it? It would be much more natural!" Just imagine! And it seems to me there is some sense in expecting that the setting would agree with the libretto and, what is more important, the music. Because it just reinforces one another, somehow like a camertone. And not distracts you from them by the thoughts it provokes. Opera is art, like ballet, instrumenral music, painting etc., and not a philosophical essay - "to make you think about it". You might think, of course, but first of all it is about a single artistic impression. And don't let those businessmen thriving on perversion of the art they do not understand make you accept their attitude to the art and believe that it is normal- to think when you were supposed to feel!
I do not mean this very production, I have not seen a complete recording, if there is one at all, it was just a general opinion.
One of the best comments I've read on TH-cam opera vids. Thank you!
Nihilism has no place in the top drawer of fine art. Fidelity, quality. That's too much to ask?
It was Oscar Wilde who said that all art was quite useless.
She makes it seem so easy! Oustanding!
This is wonderful!!
I was just about saying it is another absurd piece of staging, but then read the comments and realised that in this pol.correct world it may be quite a reality. And to me, this singing was surprisingly pleasant.
I honestly like this better than Callas or Montserrat. Might be in part due to the very crisp recording but also her voice is very pleasant and subtle, introvert even, which fits the theme pretty nicely imo.
Fabulous, fabulous singer. Love the set but still don't really get the christian references, here in set design and costume. My favourite performance of Casta Diva, though.
If you click on the heading it open up a description, seems they have placed it in a contemporary setting, something with the civilian war (in spain) not sure who is fascists and who is communists but with the crosses on her breast it is perhaps not so difficult to figure out
Ahhh... how soothing... Thank you for the offering
What is with all these armchair amateur critics who think an opera can only be done one way, or a role can only have one sound. Are you all really THAT myopic?
Thank You!!! I'm a professional opera singer, and get so tired of doing the same opera on the same sets and costumes. Good and successful companies change things up occasionally to keep it fresh. It also appeals to a younger crowd, which in turn, will keep the art alive for many more years to come.
Keith Paulson-Thorp a lot of them are just wannabe snobs who think classical music makes them intelligent. I’ve been on a few videos where people start arguing about unrelated stuff like western civilization and rap music and trying to argue that classical music and theatre is the pinnacle of human evolution. I just laugh but it is kind of depressing after a while.
Only one way to present an opera. You mean, like, the way it was written? You don't have to be myopic to see that this production of the opera makes no sense whatsoever with the story and the text. It's about pagan priestesses and there are all kinds of references in the libretto to Rome and the druids and pagan gods. There isn't a Christian personage or idea in sight. The director probably thinks sticking a bunch of tasteless crucifixes everywhere makes some great irony, but all it really does is make the text irrelevant.
We might not have to mangle old works if composers weren't totally uninterested in writing works that people actually want to go see.
Espectacular versión de esta magnifica Aria

Callas in primis e Caballè poi.
Sonya is a magnificent talent. I have heard her in concert recently and she almost brought me to tears However, I agree that something is lacking in her interpretation of Norma. Let us us give her a chance to develop and mature.
Not moving at All
Id leave the concert hall
Beautiful !
She is fantastic!
Just watched recording on Sky Arts, such an exquisite voice
I consider myself lucky to be able to see this great performance live. Sonya was great in singing and in acting as well. Loved the stage with crosses, but didn't like the uniforms/Pollione in suit/TV... However the experience will stay with me for a loooooong time... By the way for almost a week I didn't listen to my favourite band - Rammstein (yes, I am a heavy metal head) all because of this great spectacle... ;-)
Thank you Royal Opera House, thank you very much Sonya, we love you and we are so proud of you!
Great take on the theme
Church setting and robes
Weird but delightful
Healthy singing. Beautiful!😍❤
What is the matter with you people? Can't you just enjoy a beautiful aria sung by a gorgeous singer and leave it at that?
Couldn't agree with you more. It's people like these that are killing this artform. We should be encouraging and welcoming of interpretations outside of what we are used to. I expect this kind of behaviour from rowdy football fans, not (supposedly) educated people who think they either know or can do better. I wonder how many people would like it if the opera singers came into their place of work and started criticising everything they did...
Excellent interpretation.
I love her voice. The setting with thousands of crosses is horrible.
Maravillosa escena y Aria..¡¡
