I had no idea who she was back then, but I remember that after the Queen of the Night aria, there was a 6-minute standing ovation and they had to stop the production because of it. And I don't blame them. I had goosebumps from that performance for an hour.
I was like around 13 seconds: "why does that expression look familiar?" Oh yeah! That was the same look my mother would give me when I was a kid asking "have u done your homework?"
Now that i understand the scene better with the subtitles I know understand what kind of character she is. She's addicted to the power of Magic and will use any means necessary to get it back while telling her daughter she was denied the Circle of the Sun because she was a woman. It's amazing how complex this character is for a villain, even so much as going far to threaten her daughter's safety and loss of everything if she doesn't kill Sarastro for her and bring her back the Circle of the Sun. I gotta say I really wanna see the whole thing now.
I hope you do see a complete performance some day. In The Magic Flute we hear some of Mozart's most wonderful music, vocally and for the orchestra. The overture, by itself, is on a level with the whole opera.
Im not an opera expert but this is truly superb. Her vocal skills and sense of drama are absolutely fantastic. I've not heard other versions of this but I would say that Diana is probably top of the list. Listening to her voice gave me the shivers and touched my emotions ❤

Most will hold still and face the audience as if speaking to them instead of to her own daughter. Watching Diana is to watch a Mistress of her craft in action as she "shows you how it's done". The coloratura is one of the most difficult in all opera and not only does it flawlessly, but does so WHILE MOVING. That is far more difficult to achieve than she makes it look
Damrau is the best bitch with the perfect pitch! Seriously though, I've watched many different videos of Damrau singing this, but this one includes the entrance of the queen's servants/body guards. The daughter is markedly afraid of them. This sets up the scene. And allows us to see, just before the queen starts to sing, that she lowers her head and raises her crown in a very threatening manner. Just like a cat lowers its head, raises its ears by flattening them, and gives out a warning meooooow before it attacks. Also, I wonder if the audiences of Mozart's time were surprised to see the queen's anger with losing her power and frustration with having to listen to "wise" men.
A good friend of mine looks like Damrau's Queen whenever she puts on her make-up and she's neither a drag queen nor an opera singer. You don't want to run into her in a dark corner.
