She's addicted to the power of Magic and will use any means necessary to get it back while telling her daughter she was denied the Circle of the Sun because she was a woman. It's amazing how complex this character is for a villain, even so much as going far to threaten her daughter's safety and loss of everything if she doesn't kill Sarastro for her and bring her back the Circle of the Sun. I gotta say I really wanna see the whole thing now.
I hope you do see a complete performance some day. In The Magic Flute we hear some of Mozart's most wonderful music, vocally and for the orchestra. The overture, by itself, is on a level with the whole opera.

I had no idea who she was back then, but I remember that after the Queen of the Night aria, there was a 6-minute standing ovation and they had to stop the production because of it. And I don't blame them. I had goosebumps from that performance for an hour.

Emanuel Schikaneder wrote the libretto. This is also the man who ordered this opera for his theater in Vienna. An old friend of the Mozart family befriended already with Leopold Mozart, the father of Wolfgang-Amadeus. His theater had an uncommon mix of visitors: farm workers, craftsmen, petty and big bourgeois. Thus he wrote a fairy-tale opera with elements for everyone. It's not a dark opera. The main actor Papageno is basically a Hanswurst (buffoon). And who played this role at the first performance? Emanuel Schikaneder! And Wolfgang-Amadeus's sister-in-law the Queen of the Night. The main aim was to have a successful opera for this theater. Which it was.

I have seen and heard many different women performing this aria. None captivate the essence of it, both in voice and action, that Diana Damrau does. Most will hold still and face the audience as if speaking to them instead of to her own daughter. Watching Diana is to watch a Mistress of her craft in action as she "shows you how it's done". The coloratura is one of the most difficult in all opera and not only does it flawlessly, but does so WHILE MOVING. That is far more difficult to achieve than she makes it look
