      ASHLEY- I have been watching videos this week and anxiously awaiting the arrival of my first GS planter. This is the first I've seen of the cover. In Oklahoma Zone 7b we get to freezing temps. What temperature would you use it on the planter? Our temps can swing all over the place and I'm anxious to try growing greens in the winter and also to overwinter my strawberries

    According to the instructions that came with mine, you do not press the potting soil down and you fill each layer ALL THE WAY to the top, not an inch below the rim… I do like your tip about placing the plants leaning toward the edge of the planting pocket.

    I wish I had known about these planters five years ago because I stopped growing vegetables due to a lack of space for containers. Your video is the best because it had the correct amount of soil needed for each tier and how to place the plants in each cell. I am waiting for a good sale to get a Green Stalk.🍃😊

    You are blessed to have your "charming assistant". I have been seeing these growing systems for a while and thought they looked great for all the reasons you mentioned in your video. I live in central Wyoming, and we deal with very strong winds (60+MPH) and I think I would have a problem with this falling over. I really would love to try it but for the cost I will have to give that some thought. Thank you for sharing the information about it.

    • @styleme3375

      I live in Florida about 3 miles from the coast and we get some pretty crazy winds here. I’ve had 3 of the tallest greenstalks outside for over a year (even during hurricane season) and have never had an issue (although I was paranoid at first and peeked out the window to check on them frequently when I first got them). Each tier takes nearly a bag of soil so when they are stacked the tower weighs about 150 pounds. They are surprisingly sturdy and the roller base has locks on the wheels to help with stability. If you still have reservations I would suggest shorter towers? They sell shorter towers or you can break up a taller tower into two. I stack mine with deep tiers on the bottom and leaf tiers on top. The tiers all work together and greenstalk sells extra parts al la cart. For example: you could buy the 5 tier on sale and add a single extra tier and water reservoir to have two 3 tier plants. Prior to my greenstalks I had one really large plastic pot that I paid about $25 for and planted with my favorite herbs right off the back door for easy access while cooking. For about $100 I have 6 times the planting space and have been able to add more herbs, lettuces that stay perfectly clean for eating and even some fruiting plants like peppers and tomatoes. I hope my comment might be helpful to you.

    Great video! I purchased my first Greenstalk this year. I had planted two strawberries in my garden bed last year, and there were runners everywhere. So I pulled them up and planted them in my Greenstalk. Most of them have survived! One thing I didn't realize when I was putting it together were those five holes that need to line up with the pockets. Now I'm thinking I should take it apart and double check on my holes! Also I bought potting mix that seemed more like mulch and less like soil. Do you think that would be okay to leave in there or should I change it out for straight potting soil? I didn't realize there was a difference until this year since I had never bought potting mix before. Thank you for all your advice! And my broccoli plants are standing up straight on their own now 😂

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Nicole. It's hard to know about the potting mix without seeing and touching it but I think you might be able to keep it as long as you meet the nutritional needs of your plants. If you're growing plants that need nitrogen (i.e., broccoli, salad greens, spinach, etc.), I would give the plants a high-nitrogen fertilizer such as fish emulsion (Alaska Fish Fertilizer and Dramm Organic Fertilizer are two suggestions). If you're growing something that needs to bloom and set fruit, I'd recommend a fertilizer that is higher in phosphorus (that's the middle number on the package label). No matter what you use, be sure to read and follow the label directions. If it seems like your plants are really struggling, then I would change out the potting mix, but I'm really hoping you won't have to. Take care.

      Hi, Carla. We haven't had any problems with the wind, and we get some pretty strong windstorms here on occasion. By the time you fill each tier with potting soil, it's very heavy and sturdy.

    I just saw this just video suggested and looked into the price of the Green Stalk (5 tier) it’s $150 plus tax on Amazon ..however the potting mix alone to fill this depending on what you buy which for me it’s MG potting mix at 2-cubic ft..so if each holds a-cubic ft the potting mix that puts the cost at over $250 and over $400 in total that’s non organic potting mix so I bet it will cost over $500 if using organic soil..I could buy 2-garden kits that are 3 each 4 by 4 beds so a total of (6) 4 by 4 bed plus the soil for the price of the GreenStalk n soil…If I had to choose even though I would love a GreenStalk I would have pick the (6)- 4 by 4 beds but I understand not everyone has the space to grow so the GreenStalk would be the better option..

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Brenda. Thanks for weighing in on this. I wanted to clarify a few things since your estimates are a lot higher than what would the planter and potting soil would cost. I have an Original GreenStalk vertical planter, which has the deeper pockets. It requires 3 1/2 bags of organic potting soil. We just bought some at Costco for $10.89 per bag. So you're talking $150 + about $38 worth of organic potting mix, for a total of $188 plus applicable sales tax, NOT $400-$500! There are a lot of folks who don't have a garden plot, maybe they're in an apartment or a condo, so this is an ideal solution for them. Or maybe they have a tiny garden and want to expand their growing space a bit. Or they don't have a sunny location anywhere other than on a patio, for example. The planters are extremely well made and durable. I wouldn't recommend them if they weren't. I should also mention that GreenStalk has sales every now and then, with deep discounts to help your dollar stretch farther.

    • @Fritz0616
      @Fritz0616 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im glad you broke it down for me.. I totally misunderstood thinking that you meant each tier as in the 6-planter shaped planters each took 1-cubic ft instead of the whole tier taking 1-cubic ft .. if that made ant sense.. so for what potting mix I buy it would cost me roughly $40 totaling a little over $200 unless there is shipping cost .. I did mention that I understand some dont have the space and this would be a solution...

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, George. I don't know where you live but depending on the type of winter you get, it might be hard on the cover to be out for several months at a time. I'm looking at it as more of a temporary thing, until the danger of frost has passed and possibly in the fall if there's a frost in the forecast but I'm waiting for something to finish producing.
