HOW TO GARDEN IN A TINY SPACE - GREENSTALK VERTICAL PLANTER

  • Traditional Skills Summit - Come watch Josh set up our GreenStalk Vertical Garden! You, too, can grow food in a tiny space.
In today's video, Josh is demonstrating how we set up our GreenStalk Vertical Garden. It's by far the best vertical garden system we've seen (not all are created equal!).
For more information, visit the blog post here: homesteadingfa...
To get your GreenStalk Vertical Garden, visit their site and use code "homesteadingfamily" for a discount here: (affiliate) bit.ly/GreenSt...

What we love about the GreenStalk system:
    - It's a mobile system. Meaning it's on casters (wheels) so the tower can be moved or spun around so all sides have equal access to the sun. You can also move it to different locations throughout the day to "chase" the sun.
    - Perfect size tiers. Each tier is perfectly sized to hold exactly one cubic foot of soil which is usually the size bags of soil are sold in at the garden store.
    - Multiple tier options. You can grow anywhere from one tier to five tiers depending on your needs/desires. In this video, we demonstrate using all five tiers.
    - Patented watering system. Oftentimes when using a vertical garden system, the top tiers tend to take up the majority of the water whereas the bottom tiers don't get enough. GreenStalk has a fully patented watering system that waters every tier at the same time.
    - USA designed and built! GreenStalk is made entirely in Tennessee (NOT China!). That's always important to us and we try to shop in-country as often as is possible.
    - Family-owned. GreenStalk is a family-owned company!
    - 5-Year Warranty. As far as a planting system goes, that's a LONG warranty, they really stand behind their product.
    - They've given Homesteading Family followers a discount! (see DISCOUNT CODE above!)!

Ours is great. Would suggest filling one, stacking empty 2nd one, then filling it, stacking empty 3rd one, then filling it, etc. Next plant after Greenstalk is stacked. It's much easier to connect together and each tier is fairly heavy even without all the watering you've done. When completely finished with stacking and planting, then water thoroughly.

I was going to ask if it could be assembled like you described. There is no way I could lift a full tier onto another.

It seems it would be easier to plant each tier while stacked on top of one another saving on the back. Do one , dirt, plants, plastic reservoir then next tier put on and repeat for each level. Old ladies can then do it!

I'm a big fan of the Green Stalk Tower Planter. But at 75 years old I'm not able to fill, water and life the tiers (due to the weight) to their various levels. I fill each one in place and plant and water. It works well for me, and we get top notch bush beans.

I have two three tier green stalks and love them. After filling mine with soil I stacked before watering. They get real heavy. There was no problem getting the soil wet. I started seeds in all mine and doing fantastic. After planting the seeds I did water each section with seeds to keep moist until roots developed. I even have squash in bottom tier sections.

Josh, I've seen a lot of people with this system but you have the best video on it! You should get a bonus from that company lol. That sweet little assistant that was helping looks just like her Momma! Great job. Can't wait to see how it does! Happy 4th!

When you do this don't put the tomato or basil on the top. They are water hogs and sometimes the plants below them don't do very well.

Roots and Refuge did a video on this that was a little bit easier if you were not as strong as Josh. Great Video here though but I feel that lifting the already full containers would hurt a lot of people who are using this with mobility issues. Also your water trays did you make sure the little holes were facing the tier spaces? Makes the watering more direct to the plants.

This was the most helpful video about the Greenstalk planter that I've seen. Most videos include too much chatter about what you can grow and how the planter works, or just show the person setting it up for the first time without enough advice. This answered all of my questions.

Brilliant! I love this idea, I'm going to have to see about getting at least one if not 2 or 3 because I live in a mobile home park. (just moved here from a small apartment) I have a patio & a small yard. We are allowed to put in gardens & I've been thinking about a couple of raised beds but this little idea will give me more of a yard left to enjoy without it being taken all up by a garden. Thanks for advertising & demonstrating this product.

Patio tomatoes are determinant not indeterminate. Indeterminate varieties grow big. Determinant tomatoes grow to a certain size then stop. They are shorter and bushier. 🍅

The water system on the GREENSTALK is amazing!
I love to lean in and listen as it goes down! I love that you can still move the trays if around if you decide you want to plant something that needs to be lower. I got to use mine last year. Alas it's still in Minn & I'm not! Disappointed the choc brown wasn't available when I last looked.
Oh I also had the other orangy one - couldn't move it. Watering was definitely a royal pain ...

I just put together a Garden Tower (different vertical garden) and it has a compost area in the middle which you can also raise worms in for worm castings. My suggestion for putting together the vertical gardens is to put each section on and then add the soil, watering as you go. An older person would not be able to lift one of those sections filled with soil and water, especially as it gets nearer the top. Once it is all together then you add the plants or seeds.

Morning all. I just purchased a GreenStalk and my question is have you grown any produce in the GreenStalk all winter with any success? I lost a bunch of my garden this year from deer, squirrels and early freeze and I would LOVE to be able to make up my losses with growing inside with the GreenStalk this winter. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and wisdom with us all. I've learned SO much from you. I so greatly appreciate it.

Hi Elena, I have one. It is growing beautifully. (peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, stringbeans, carrots, parsley, basil, lemongrass, and spinach). You can fertilize it any way you want to. I use 511 mix with water in bucket and pour it in or you can use the grain and sprinkle it in each pocket. Not a lot though. I hope this helps. Grow grow grow!

    • @rhema387

Hi! GreenStalk Inventor's daughter here. Liquid fertilizer is the easiest way mid-season because you just put it in the water reservoir when you water. So easy!

You could Stack round pots with the pots being a little smaller as you go higher. Make extra drainage holes in the bottom evenly spaced. Put a rebar up the middle holes and some pvc piping between the pots to hold them up. I've done this for strawberries and it was easy enough. It's not as secure as this though, so I wouldn't put it out in a place where wind would knock it over.
