      Hello, @Negative_Legend, Have you ever heard about the game called May's Mysteries The Secret of Dragonville? Cause if not I deffinitely recommend you to check it out. May's Mysteries came out on NDS and PC and was HEAVILY inspired by Layton. To see just HOW heavily it was inspired by Layton it is recommended that you play NDS version.

      MAJOR SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL OF THE LATER LAYTON GAMES!
      Most of it was explored starting with Unwound Future.
      Considering...
      - he lost his parents to an evil society, with his father eventually becoming the boss of said society
      - his brother disappeared shortly thereafter, only to die a minute after Layton got to know he was still alive
      - he witnessed the supposed death of his best friend and was unable to save him despite trying to
      - the love of his life died in a tragic accident, only to return for three days before finally being dead.
      Yeah, Layton had a rough life.

    It's interesting to see an American's perspective on this franchise. In Europe, we had much more marketing and it was well promoted that the Spectre's Call was a prequel. It was probably thanks to Nintendo of Europe publishing most of Level-5. It also helped there other franchises for a time, such as Inazuma Eleven and Yokai Watch
    I hope that Nintendo or even some other company will publish their games outside of Japan

I doubt they're gonna continue with the franchise after the reception of mystery journey and the death of Akira Tago, but I still have a lotta love for the franchise. I just got PL vs PW for all of my money and I think it's okay if you skip it because the puzzles are not as great as the main Layton games. I'm still enjoying it, but more in the way you would enjoy a dramatic fantasy isekai than how you would enjoy a traditional Layton game.

      Apparently people can't shut up about DC whenever LV5 is brought up, so I'm glad this one video is free of them. Usually their game announcements are spammed with "DC3 when?" type of blokes and it gets tiring really fast. The thing is, LV5 has no control over the Dark Cloud franchise since it belongs to Sony 100%. Part of the reason why Level-5 can't include DC in their anniversary illustrations along with the rest of their franchises.

    • @phantasmch
      @phantasmch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Grima the Fell Dragon Usually whenever Level-5 dared to do a big announcement of something not related to DC people kept spamming DC and DC3 when. People always miss the fact that LV5 originally worked with Sony's ideas since they started off as a developer company, not a publishing one. DC was more of a tech demo to see if a Zelda-like game would do well, while DC2 exists because Hino was not satisfied with the first game and asked for a soft reboot (according to RPGfan), hence the reason why it is not a direct sequel but there are many paralels with the original.

    Honestly as someone who's also played all 6 Layton games, I always felt there was some serious disconnect between the originals and prequels 🤔 Like it was obvious they wanted to close the series with Lost/Unwound Future but either demand was too high to justify ending the franchise or they felt they had to explain why Layton hangs around with some preteen boy who isn't related to him 🤣
    The prequels also felt kinda rushed too. Lost Spectre/Spectre's Call felt like it had a shitload of content cut from it, so the story felt a bit unfinished. Miracle Mask felt like it was written in one take since the ending flies off in a completely different direction entirely to the rest of the game. And Azran Legacy is just a 10 mile long ass pull parade lmao
    Also Pandora's/Diabolical Box is my favourite game, hello from the UK 👀🇬🇧

      right? I feel like nothing will ever match the magic of the first trilogy. I also really loved Specter and Miracle Mask, but either I can't remember a thing about Azran or I was so confused playing it that I stopped lol

    as someone who started the series in elementary school and periodically replays the games, the stories are confusing, if not outright nonsensical (i’m looking at you, diabolical box). even so, this series holds a really high place in my heart and the prospect of no more layton stuff getting made is deeply saddening. if it still continues to be produced in japan, i feel like a lot of people will take the dai gyakuten saiban route and make a fan translation mod.

    People didn't lose their interest because it focused on Katrielle. They lost interest because this game was just plain garbage and the biggest disappointment of my life. I still can't forgive Level 5 for that. If they would have gone with the "what happened with Professor Layton" storyline it could have been good. But no, instead we have to search for a stupid pet. Imagine going from SPOLIER destroying half of London to that.

    This franchise was the best selling Nintendo franchises in the UK for a very long time. Every store shelf was packed with them with every new release. I think when Lost Future came out Toys R' Us had like nearly 1500 copies in store. I don't know, I was only like 4 or 5 at the time, but I can remember every store I went to Professor Layton was one of the most trending game franchises, along with Halo, Batman Arkham and Uncharted.

    Okay here’s an idea. Catrielles mystery game has come and launched on the switch. So that means that touchscreen games are indeed possible on switch. So what about an €60 package with a collection of the Layton games. With new and improved cutscenes. I know this seems unlikely but they already revamped some games for IOS release so it wouldn’t be a big job

    Professor Layton is forever my favorite Nintendo DS game. I lost my original blue nintendo DS a few years ago teaching English abroad bc they didn't allow it to be sent home in the US bc of the battery in it. I was crushed. I kept all my Layton games for memory sake. And my now husband remembered he had a 3DS stored away. I'm now starting my old DS games over again for serotonin. I can't believe how many puzzles my child mind had memorized. But that's my little story, thank you for this video. I had no idea how many spin offs there were! Unwound Future makes me cry like a baby every time

    A game that reminds me of Professor Layton is the Rhythm Thief and the Emperor’s treasure. A cute little rhythm game released in 2012 with a cool protagonist. What pisses me off though is that the game ends with an open ending and we haven’t gotten a sequel for 8 years😭....
    Anyway loved your video and its style, I subbed. Also when conventions are a thing again, consider going to a gaming convention. I found my copy of the last specter (which I lost when I was 13. I was devastated.) there for 10 bucks.

  • @mstefaniek.491

    Imo the issue with Layton's Mystery Journey wasn't even that it focused on Layton's daughter but the story. The previous games always had these huge amazing mysteries to solve whereas in this game, there were only short stories where everything always turned out to be fine and no mystery at all. They were just boring and somewhat childish, especially compared to the other games.
    (Disclaimer tho: I didn't finish the game, I only played the first three or so stories. So if there turns out to be a bigger mystery at some point, that's cool but if the beginning of the game isn't interesting, what's the point?)
    Anyway, I plan on buying all of the DS & 3DS Layton games bc as of now, I only have the last specter which I recently replayed (after being disappointed with Mystery Journey lol) and I want to replay the others to, I had only borrowed them from a friend

    • @sircharima9082
      @sircharima9082 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yo, I finished Katrielle's game and your complaint is pretty on-point. The episodic formula could've definitely worked well, Layton Brothers proves that, but Layton's Mystery Journey is just a rushed mess in terms of plot.
      It's like the writers forgot to add an antagonist to the game so they put some dumb bullshit together at the very last minute where you find out Katrielle's assistant (can't remember his name lol) is a bad guy because of some contrived tragic backstory. Had the writers built up to this plot point, the last case could've worked, but there's just no emotional investment to be had.
      It's kinda sad tbh. I'd love a professor layton game with a female protagonist, but it's clear not a whole lot of heart was put into this game. Katrielle in general really didn't need to exist, they could've just had Flora be the main character and nothing much would change, really.
      At his point the only direction this series can go is continuing the Layton Brothers plotline, a lot of people want a sequel whereas they don't really care for Katrielle and her story at all.

    Awesome video. I got into the Layton series awhile back and I really love the series. My favorite would probably have to be Unwound Future. As for my favorite Level 5 game, that would be Yo-kai Watch 3.
