I think if Star Darlings was made more recently, seeing how astrology and stuffs like that are super popular on TikTok and IG, it could've been a lot more successful
Perhaps maybe tone down the wish aspect and focus on the outer space part in general, it could have worked like monster high but in space. Maybe draw from star myths from around the world for inspiration

My thoughts summarized are: 1.) The book series needed a bit more thought when it came to the little language quirks. Like, someone really REALLY needed to hand an astrology book and a book on the science of outer space to the Author of the Star Darlings. So that way they could've been a bit more creative with the quirks. 2.) The books should've been longer and handled a bit more in depth and their wishes given a bit more time. I honestly think they missed out on a lot of funny shenanigans they could've had with the girls deal with normal Earth things and interacting with normal people. 3.) The books should've had a standalone animated series like Monster High and Ever After High, and not just some random quick mini itty bitty series. Like we actually get to see the girls go to earth and grant wishes and do the missions and solve the mystery, all that jazz. It really pisses me off that Disney -- multi billion dollar company -- couldn't shell out a couple grand to have more effort and marketing into the books and animation. Like... Seriously Disney?.... @mercurybertram9538 I'm working on a Star Darlings rewrite right now! It's part original story, part rewrite, part adaptation and I'm already on the eighth chapter!
I'll admit, i'm a fan just cause i saw the animations and like them and the songs, but never read the books. And it's so disapointing seeing a fictional world with so much potential, with worldbuilding being its backbone. It could be as good or better than Winx i believe, but no, they do a teen school drama, very short and with no depth (on the animations), just exploring little bits of the universe and the girls and they relation with each other and it's all so little! I honestly watch It all again sometimes, i still like It, but i can say that i'm watching cause i'm bored and there's nothing better to watch, and cause i love the designs and world building
Exactly!! I was so frustrated after the series ended cus it ended so soon!! It could have been so much more! And the fact that there was a school for boys makes me mad cus I now want to see them but never will. Also the dolls were really pretty
I know right? Seriously, it gets cheesey sometimes, but it's a great show/book series! There are flaws, of course, but I still think Disney never got enough credit...
@@frostingfluff I can relate A LOT! It's kinda annoying when you like something so much but no one has a clue what you're talking about! So yeah, I can relate.
But not all their names are necessarily space-themed. Like what's a name like Clover doing in there? And "Sage" is how her name's spelt, not "Saige", which again, what connection does sage have to the cosmos? For a while, I was also thinking of their letters spelling out "STAR DARLINGS" when arranged properly, but it doesn't work. ...Also there is a thirteenth Zodiac, Ophiuchus, the Serpent-Bearer...
Name a more Gen-Z thing than someone looking like they're about to participate in an 80's glam rocker derby joking about wanting to die. I think that's ✨sparkly✨
@Jasmine N. I don't think descendants is crap, the actors did great job. I kinda disagree about the character's second parents but that's about it that I hate.
we saw that eah was cancelled due to competition with disney descendants, but star darlings was also cancelled to make more time for it too. i am so infuriated by that, one of disney’s own series cancelled for another disney franchise. and they have unrelated and not similar themes and ideas.
@@pinkprincess6136 that’s what makes me mad, they can both coexist because they don’t have similar concepts, but disney dropped a lot of other series and franchises when descendants was seen to be successful.
@@muffinpaste that's bad, Ever after high is similar to Descendants Ever after high I think is not from Disney but even though it is similar it got released before descendents did.
Vivica is literally everything I look forward to in a "kids-oriented show" character - she is sassy, petty and weirdly keen to destroy the main characters' lives for literally no apparent reason (or very badly chosen one). I didn't really care about the 12s' books but when hers came along, god I literally devoured it. Justice for Viv!!!
Their names are literally The Zodiac signs. I wouldn't have that much interest in this series, because it is not in any way my style of books (because I only read the best of childrens books, like Percy Jackson and KOTLC) But it seems kinda cool.
I’m surprised Negative didnt include or mention the Star Darling dolls They were a pretty big deal when they came out, they didn’t last long though. They were short lived like the books and show.
star darlings was one of the most beautiful franchises i’ve seen. i have all the books and dolls, which are all so beautifully detailed. it’s such a shame that it didn’t stay around, i would’ve loved to see what else would happen/and what the other girls would look like as dolls.
I remember being a little bit addicted to Star Darlings because of the cute songs, pretty animations and also the story. Although it's not as good as any other animated series out there, it still has a huge part in my heart. Seeing that they just focused more on animating Descendants than this story is understandable yet makes me a little bit sad and the animation of Descendants always makes me remember about what happened to Ever After High which makes me more sad.
anybody remember the book series "magic tree house"? it was my favorite book series in 3rd grade and it really made history more interesting for me, the book series wasn't that popular in the school library (the Geronimo Stilton series was everybody's favorite) so I was able to borrow the books I wanted. Also, the 3D-ish art in star darlings is beautiful
it was one of the most popular books in my school library so i got the books off of a family friend and everyone was so jealous when i brought a stack of like seven and read them all
Ok, but can we at least admit that the animation is beautiful with the stars and the glowing and the sparkles and the glitter? Also some of the songs are fire. **cough** Up **cough cough**
I read (most of) the books as an adult, cause at the time I needed something very uncomplicated to relax my brain, and one thing that stood out to me a lot (aside the overuse of star-related neologisms) was that all of them took place in the USA, like the rest of the world was just water. That felt a) odd, b) missed opportunity, and c) very shallow. Though cover arts are pretty cute.
I loved this show so much when i was younger. the character designs, the way everything and everyone was so shiny, and the books were glorious. tysm for covering this show!
I saw the thumbnail and I was like "wth is Star Darlings?" and then it hit me like a truck. I cant believe I forgot about it and then suddenly remembered it
Till this day I've never given up hope that it would come back. I was in the height of my interest for astrology when this came out so I looooved it but wasn't no one talking about it at the time.
Aaa I remember star darlings! They had such pretty dolls I always wanted, with those glass inset eyes like Liv dolls or Bratzillas (another doll line I wish would come back)!
Omg I worked at the animation studio that did the animation for the shorts! I worked on an unrelated project, so this is all second hand knowledge, but there was actually supposed to be a full length series. However the dolls based on the characters did not sell as well as Disney had hoped (and I'm assuming books too, since you mentioned they're not very good?) and the whole project was scrapped. The animation studio ended up doing only the shorts and one "full-length" episode (22 mins) which was originally supposed to be the season finale. No idea if the reason I heard for cancellation was true or not, but stumbling on this was a bit of a blast from the past :)
The 2010 series would be great to talk about, because a lot like Angels Friends it was an Italian Flash cartoon with an interesting premise but poorly dubbed into English.
@@meharozkhan3619 I liked it enough to watch as many episodes as I could find at the time. I only say it was poorly dubbed because I remember the voices not matching with the mouth movements on screen 😂
I dunno, that 80's glam look floored me when you swapped to it. Almost makes me want to try it, and I look like a neanderthal had a baby with a mountain.
This show is so underrated! I never seen anyone talk about it but here we are. Thanks for recaping the books because I only seen the show and didn't have the books because when I saw the finale for the first time, I was confused when Scarlett got kicked out of the SD and was replaced by Ophelia, etc. I finally get some closure for the series and I wish the books were animated and had more depth
6:34 is why I shipped those 2 when I was a kid. To this day I still firmly believe that Cassie was trying to ask her out, saw Sage's reaction, realized Sage wasn't interested, and then added the friend line to fix things.
If Disney Plus airs a live action Star Darlings series that would bring all the books and the canceled stories to life then that would make it better than it was before and I have this kind of dream cast right now since they're a lot of characters introduced in the books 1. Millie Bobby Brown as Sage 2. Paulina Chavez as Libby 3. Storm Reid as Leona 4. Lana Condor as Vega 5. Daniella Rose Russell as Scarlet 6. Emily Skinner as Cassie 7. Iman Vellani as Piper 8. I watched the last episode when I was in 6th grade, 12 years old at the time. Scarlet was my favorite. I'm 16 now and I always wondered what in the world happened to it as new episodes or videos from the Star Darlings channel never came out anymore. Thank you for making this video and bringing me back to part of my childhood, for one last time.
I was just watching one of your videos (the alice in the wonderland one) and when I saw the notification my brain was like: first, how dare you bring memories that I didn't even knew I had? And second, are you watching me? Anyway, I love your content. Don't forget to drink water.
One of my favorite books when I was younger was Avalon: Web of Magic. It was such a fun series and the drawings within the books. I wish they'd done something with it. 10/10 would recommend the book if anyone's looking for a fun kid's series.
@@carmelawatson5435 Same! I can still remember being obsessed with the animal companions and I had a huge crush on the girl who lives in the woods with the wolf. I'm glad Disney didn't get their paws on it, but I wish it was more popular.
@@hajimesenpai7996 I was obsessed with it. I think they actually had a website (not sure if it's still there) where you could download songs from the book.
thank you for covering this! it was so cool having a doll series based off the zodiacs and with such a pretty aesthetic, and for them to pour all the potential into books they never promoted was terrible especially considering the lackluster finale. i actually have sage’s book and theyre really good reads!
Disney really screwed over this series. Making 10 episodes of complete filler THEN decided to put things in the book in the very last finale of the show is asinine.
I suspect that reason for its mysterious abrupt ending is due to it being too creative, and modern Disney, ever since Bob Iger took over, almost always distrusts, rejects and fears creativity since new material, to them, is always risky, like any art or science. All because of corporate-think and Iger's shortsighted monopoly.
I remember my favorite thing about star darlings wasn’t the books or show (I didn’t even know the plot), it was the dolls. I always wanted the dolls but they never had the characters I wanted in stock :( I was surprised you didn’t mention them in this video! They always looked high quality to me.
I remember reading those books I believe I had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8. Although I seem to have lost 7 and 5 at some point but I remember reading Scarlet (5) and Piper (7). I remember seeing one of the songs on Disney channel during commercial breaks a while after I had read the books. I really like how there’s little pain splotches on the inside of the pages, gives the books more life.
There’s a manga only disney princess. Also: wtf happened to Hanazuki?! I’m so salty they cancelled hanazuki, it was so cute and it actually really helped me.
Was I the only one who thought Scarlet was half-human? I haven't read her book but I always thought they were building to something with her desire to go Earth. And the fact she called it "Earth" stood out to me
she also seemed to be the most rational human thinking out of all of the main band group. and whenever there were articles about new information (negative energy during the odd wall episode) she started researching it and looking into it super interested. as if it’s not something they’ve been told about.
The bit where Sage sits in a chair and thinks its comfy- everything in Star Land accommodates to the preference of whomever sits in them and when Sage goes to Earth to and sits in an earth chair she's surprised that its uncomfortable and isn't going to change
The dolls were high quality, I still want to buy one for my collection. I never read the books, but visually I always liked the series, the animated series could have used a little bit less of the glow effect because most of the time it was hard to watch because of it.
My favorite book from when I was younger will always be dear dumb diary because even though it was written by a grown man they were still incredibly relatable as a teenage girl. If they were still coming out I would still read them
I was wondering about the Star Darlings! I bought my daughter one of the books from Dollar Tree and she loved it so much she wanted the products and dolls for it. By now they were all expensive and the only thing I could afford was a poster. I always wondered what the deal with them were.
This is the first one I've actually never heard of but I love the character designs for the show. I definitely would've been into this if it came out a few years before
Funnily enough, way before this video was made, i came across the website when i was twelve i think, thought it looked pretty and interesting but didn't look any further into it. Then, when i was sixteen, i thought about the series again, checked out the website again and the wiki, wrote up a draft for a story about it on Ao3 but then never got around to finishing it (ADHD brain struck once again) so the draft got deleted and i forgot about Star Darlings again. Then, two years ago, i thought about Star Darlings again and went on this massive Star Darlings binge where i looked up everything i could about it. I watched the webisodes, listened to the songs, reread the wiki, checked out the TVTropes page on the franchise and even hunted down and ordered all fourteen books plus the Wisher's Guide. I read all the books in like, two weeks and then wrote up another draft for the story on Ao3, deleted it myself and rewrote it before posting and met my discord friend through it. It's funny to think that this franchise that has been so mistreated by Disney, managed to help me make a friend just as into girly and sparkly stuff as me!
The songs are some of the best Disney released, musically and lyrically. Also better than some of the "magical girls" cartoons where the girls form a band.
YAS!!! Finally, I’ve been waiting for this video!!! I miss this show so much, Disney took off one fo their best animated shows, and it still angers me to this day!!!
This makes me so saddd 😭😭 tbh by the time the star darlings came out I was about 12 or 13 so I wasn’t watching Disney as much but THEY HAD GOOD MUSIC. That “up” song was unironically good and if it actually had a series I think it would’ve done decently. It’s funny because any time I bring up the star darlings no one ever remembers 💀
I am an apprentice at a public library & help out a lot in the children's section. The ungodly amount of Erin Hunter books is so hard to handle in seasons when people return a lot of books, mainly because it's hard to always keep space on the shelves for at least 30 books of *one single author*. Same with the Diary of the Whimpy Kid series. We have a at least three copies of every single book & if they happen to get back in masses we have to push & shove all the books on the rest of the shelves around to create remotely enough space.
I only found out about this story cause I got a hard copy of one of the books for free when I went to a back to school fair with my siblings. I've yet to read it but I honestly might now
What Happened to Skyland Story The story of Skyland revolves around a rebellion organized by former guardian Mila, a powerful Seijin and the pirate Marcus; with whom Mila has fallen in love. Together they persuade the various bands of pirates to band together to launch a rebellion. The rebellion initially sees success but something goes horribly wrong while the Rebels are liberating a Sphere-controlled block. Many pirates are killed, Marcus vanishes, and the rebellion is all but destroyed. Mila takes their two young children, a son named Mahad and a Seijin daughter called Lena, and escapes to Babylonia, in the heart of the Sphere-controlled zone. She stays there for 12 years, hiding both her daughter’s and her own Seijin abilities as she raises her children on a small farm. But Oslo never forgot her, or his fascination for the prophecy and his belief that Mila is the Lady of Light and they were the ones mentioned in the prophecy. In the year 2251, his Guardians finally locate her. Mila fights back but is captured and taken away to Karzhem, Skyland’s most secure prison. The location can only be pinpointed by the sphere, not the resistance because it moves to unpredictable locations. Though Mila dismisses the prophecy and his belief that they are the ones it referred to, Oslo comes to believe that the Lady of Light is actually Lena, especially given that her powers exceed her mother's. Her children, before Mila is located, are sent away in a stolen Sphere ship with instructions to find a man known as the Vector. Mahad, a 17-year-old pilot, and Lena, 12 years old and already a powerful Seijin, are shot down and then rescued by a small group of pirates led by Captain Cortez. They join the resistance, determined to find their mother, free Skyland, and learn more about the father. Oslo has plans of his own: to capture Lena and fulfill the prophecy, ruling Skyland.
I remember watching this as it came out on youtube. Then one day, the final episode dropped and I was like "what???" I genuinely thought that they had showed the 'missing episodes' on tv, and that I had missed them until this video, so I guess you finally gave me that closure I never thought I needed
With Halloween on the horizon it would be nice to see something like Ruby Gloom or Scary Godmother get the "what happened to" treatment. Something about gothic children's shows like those got a cult following in the 2000s, but never seemed to last long. If you didn't see them at the time they were popular, then you probably missed out.
Damn, Star Darlings just isn't doing it for you? Oh well. At least you know it exists and put it out there. The concept and worldbuilding had so much potential it's a shame that Disney won't do more with it. A lot of fans out there complain that the webisodes don't follow the continuity of the books, and that's one flaw that I do agree with. It's like there are 2 different teams working on different projects under the same franchise but never checked with each other, and that's probably what happened. To those of you who aren't aware, there are 2 other SD properties that Negative didn't mention in this video (besides the doll line) + (TH-cam won't let me post links here) : 1) There was a Star Darlings mobile app game. It's got multiple story arcs with each Star Darling character (mainly focus on Sage, Libby, Leona, Vega, Scarlet) + choose a dialogue, dress up, trivia, etc. Sadly it was taken down from the app store ages ago. There's a gameplay video on TH-cam if you look for it. 2) There was a one-shot comic printed in a Disney UK magazine. It has long since been sold out but there was someone who managed to get their hands on it and post it on Tumblr for all to see. Handle is @ herebeminis Also back in 2017, someone asked the co-creator of SD on Twitter, Shana Muldoon Zappa, if the show is on hiatus and will there be any more content. Zappa replied "Stay tuned...There is more to come!" And then nothing happened after that. No new books, new episodes, new dolls, nothing. There's a screenshot of it posted on "nataliezworld . com" blog as proof.
MAN the mobile app! I dont know what happened but for some reason I couldnt play past the first arc. My guess is it was probably pay to play and thats sad.
Oh noo I remember the author saying that 😭I even held my hopes after seeing no following announcements, and after like 4+ years passed I was like "...they're never going to continue the series, are they" I completely forgot there was a mobile app though, and didn't know there was a mini comic! Definitely will check them out, thank you for the receipts :)
My friends and I made a game to play at recess based on Star Darlings, it was called star ball, and our playground had a raised platform for swings and about 15 feet infront of the platform was the track, that is made of gravel. We would kick the ball off the platform and on either side of the platform was each player. Once the ball was off, the goal is to get the ball, and run back over the track. (The ball is the wish I think??) it was banned withen the week because we allowed tackling and kids got messed up from being tackled on the gravel
Thanks to you, I finally know what happens to this serie. In my country, the books never came to the libraries, but the animated shorts were shown EVERY. SINGLE. COMMERCIAL. BREAKS. I thought it was a new show and I was pretty hyped to see it, but my expectations were never fullfiled.
The Power of Twelve is the culmination of a long series, most of which was never made. You can get an outline of the missing episodes from the books. But the music wasn't bad. Regal Academy had better songs, but the songs here are better than most of Winx. I assume the Star Darlings were dropped because the dolls weren't selling. Disney isn't really an entertainment company, they're a marketing company. If the merchandise isn't moving, the project gets dropped. The same thing happened to Tinkerbell. Each of the movies was a money maker, but the toys weren't selling, so the money was shifted to a more profitable project.
Why is the school determining the punishment? Because it was written for kids, and getting suspended is a big thing. It's the same as why expulsion was worse than death to First Year Hermione.

Maybe not as good as Winx but it has soo much potential but companies now, don't care about things like that. Teen dramas are so bad tbh.
You should read the books it was awesome and well detailed about their adventure in wishworld i have sage and scarlett comes with the dolls
Exactly!! I was so frustrated after the series ended cus it ended so soon!! It could have been so much more! And the fact that there was a school for boys makes me mad cus I now want to see them but never will. Also the dolls were really pretty
Omg no one EVER talks abt star darlings finally its getting coverage lol

I know right? Seriously, it gets cheesey sometimes, but it's a great show/book series! There are flaws, of course, but I still think Disney never got enough credit...

The Star Darlings names have the first letters of the zodiac signs, for example Vega is Virgo, Saige is Sagittarius, Libby is Libra, etc.
Vega also happens to be named after an actual star.
Wow! I didn't know that. Thanks for the trivia. :)
@Jasmine N. no Cassie is Cancer. Clover is Capricorn.

Just a few days ago, I was like, “hey what happened to star darlings?” and went on a trip down memory lane. Perfect timing with this video!
Me too
I remember being a little bit addicted to Star Darlings because of the cute songs, pretty animations and also the story. Although it's not as good as any other animated series out there, it still has a huge part in my heart. Seeing that they just focused more on animating Descendants than this story is understandable yet makes me a little bit sad and the animation of Descendants always makes me remember about what happened to Ever After High which makes me more sad.

Today I learned Disney has two characters named Leona - the one from Twisted Wonderland (my fav) and the one from Star Darlings
Let’s be real the romance genre is the easiest because if it’s duel POV and enemies to lovers, I’ll eat that ish up
Disney really screwed over this series. Making 10 episodes of complete filler THEN decided to put things in the book in the very last finale of the show is asinine.
i really liked star darling as a kid and i had two books about the series. i kinda miss it.
Star Darlings definitely would've worked better as a tv show instead of a book series.
As of yesterday, the official star darlings channel does not exist.
Scarlet and Piper were both my favorites !
There’s a manga only disney princess. Also: wtf happened to Hanazuki?! I’m so salty they cancelled hanazuki, it was so cute and it actually really helped me.
I think this is the first topic you've covered that I have exactly zero knowledge on, so I'm interested.
Oh god the nostalgia from the title, I have the books somewhere in my room
PLEASE I WAS LITERALLY THINKING ABOUT THEM A WHILE AGO thank you for this blessing

It would have been more of a thing if you saw it when you were young
Speaking of Disney IP's everyone forgets anyone remember Spectrobes? A line of original video-games Disney interactive made.

I've yet to read it but I honestly might now
I never heard of star darlibgs before. But you Make exploring franchises fun so i'm not complaining
What Happened to Skyland
Story
The story of Skyland revolves around a rebellion organized by former guardian Mila, a powerful Seijin and the pirate Marcus; with whom Mila has fallen in love.

@@skootergirl22 that would be cool, but Skyland is future earth. maybe the Storm Hawks go to Earth at the end of the sices.
To those of you who aren't aware, there are 2 other SD properties that Negative didn't mention in this video (besides the doll line) + (TH-cam won't let me post links here) :
1) There was a Star Darlings mobile app game.
Handle is @ herebeminis
Also back in 2017, someone asked the co-creator of SD on Twitter, Shana Muldoon Zappa, if the show is on hiatus and will there be any more content.
Oh noo I remember the author saying that 😭I even held my hopes after seeing no following announcements, and after like 4+ years passed I was like "...they're never going to continue the series, are they"
I completely forgot there was a mobile app though, and didn't know there was a mini comic! Definitely will check them out, thank you for the receipts :)
What does SD stand for?
It's Star-
Darling~
.... Was I the only one who heard it as "Star Daddy" and almost choked on my water?
I loved this series and totally forgot about it
