I love that they characterized Mihawk as being like a hawk. He rarely blinks, making small adjustments with his head instead like a bird of prey. Plus he instantly clocked how strong Zoro was in that first clash and immediately relaxes his guard for the rest of the duel. Dude's a monster.
Mihawk is just that good, no Devil Fruit power😄 It can be confusing but not all strong characters ate Devil Fruits, you can get certain abilities just by training in One Piece. Same for Kuro in the previous episodes, he was just that fast. Our main characters just got a big reality check, they are still only big fishes in a small pond in the East Blue, the Grand Line is a whole other level.

Age of Characters: Zoro & Sanji 19, Nami 18, Luffy & Usopp 17; Koby 15 ish. Drinking age is basically nonexistent. Luffy doesn't drink. Zoro is constantly drinking so much so that it is hard for him to get drunk. Nami is another who has very high tolerance as well. Not surprisingly, when you think about it. These two are one's who have been alone by themselves for years, so they know a lot more than the others about the world and how to survive or deal with the consequences of traveling alone.
I love how you pointed out Zoro questioning Nami about she calling him her friend after telling him that she doesn't have any friends, while everyone was like disappointed at Zoro for being mean to her. Zoro is sceptical indeed, he probably saw Nami making arrangement to ditch them at the bar too so he's not buying it about the friend thing. Also, during the drinking game, he took a shot after Nami said that she doesn't have any friends. I believe he did that because he initially thought she have one in case she think the crews are her friends now. He was wrong bcs she said otherwise, so he took a shot
Considering that Zoro bisected a dude in the first episode, Mihawk clearly pulled back hard. He could've cut Zoros upper body into two halves if he wanted
Mihawk is BORED. He's tired of fighting cowards. When he saw Zoro had some skill, but was willing to accept defeat with honor, he saw the possibility of a future challenge. I think he pulled back to keep Zoro alive, and to leave him with a reminder in the form of a scar so he doesn't forget how far he needs to go. Mihawk has some strange motivations, but he does seem to live with honor.
@@Crescentknight8189 And Arlong was literally scared when he saw Zoro's scar in the manga. He realised that if Zoro could fight in that state, he would easily surpass him very quickly.
A way to view Mihawk's wounding Zoro: he gave him a deep enough wound to kill a lesser man. But if Zoro really had that fire and determination, he'd hang on and pull through by the sheer force of his willpower. If he couldn't survive that wound, then Mihawk knew he'd never have what it takes to beat him. The injury was in and of itself a test by Mihawk to see if Zoro was worthy of his attention.
Remember Koby was the one who told Garp that Luffy is the name of the pirate who stole the map to The Grand Line back in episode 2. He's known since then which is why he wanted to handle the pursuit himself with the new cadets and without any interference from the rest of the marines.
Grap already suspected or knew that it was Luffy when he heard straw hat pirate stole the map. It was just confirmed when he talked to Koby. In the anime, Garp runs into Luffy differently altogether. No spoilers though. It was something to behold 😂 lol. Think about this too. If Garp pursues Luffy, then he can tell other captains or officers to back off because he is already doing it.
you guys are my favorite in this space! Intelligent, not obnoxious , "authentic" and I love the extra care. although watching reactions is more of a guilty plesure for me, this is just plesure.
The power you see in Vice Admirals Garp and Miwhak is their physical strength gained through years of training. Don't forget that this is a manga/anime world where if you throw an canonball a thousand times in you life, you become strong enough to throw it a mile away, and if you practice swordsmanship every day, you can split a ship in half. Zoro hasn't shown anything otherwordly so far, but that doesn't mean that with lots of trainings he won't become "otherwordly". This is a world where trainings do magic.
Running into Mihawk in East Blue is literally like running into a Level 99 Wandering Raid Boss in a Level 10 Newbie Area. He's an example of just *how strong* people can be without Devil Fruit and how dangerous the Grand Line is and will be. "King of the Pirates, hey? That's even more dangerous than defeating me." Is one hell of a statement from someone as strong as Mihawk.
Just so you guys know, Kuro, Garp, Shanks, and Mihawk do not possess Devil Fruits. There's more in the world than just devil fruits.;) There's supernatural levels of training, in regards to those three. Though, Garp in particular will showcase a subcategory of the same specific thing that Shanks has on the 8th episode.;)
Steven Ward based his Mihawk voice out of the english voice actor in the anime and Scar in Lion King. Scar has the same "I'm stronger than you, but bored". Scar is basically Mihawk in a cat.
One thing I love about OP is the power level difference between the OGs like Mihawk, Shanks, and Garp and the new generation. I don't watch the anime either so I'm not entirely sure if Mihawk's abilities are supposed to be actual powers like the devil fruits or just an exaggerated depiction of his sword skills but regardless it was one of the coldest introductions to a character in the show! Man I'm still in awe how well they casted almost every character in this show.. they really setting the bar for anime live adaptions!
To be fair Nami said she didn't have any friends growing up, not that the stawhats aren't her friends now. If Mihawk had wanted him dead he could've cut Zoro in two (like Zoro did to Mr.7 in the first episode).
No spoilers but yeah the Grand Line is treacherous. If I remember right there at least 4 big reasons why you just can’t go in that area half ready but I won’t say it here. That should be explained later. Lastly, I think they keep referring to the map as a map of the Grand Line or a map to the Grand Line. Unless it was changed for the live action, one of those descriptions of the map is pretty accurate while the other is a misnomer.
