The whole "the bigger guys are slower" idea makes no sense, considering how imbalanced that would be. Toad having top acceleration but also higher top speed would make him completely broken.
You said it yourself, Stephen. No matter if you're playing as Luigi or Toad, your results are still determined by your driving skills (or lack thereof). No character will make a difference if you keep running into walls. Also, you need to study the map of Yoshi Valley. Because you weren't driving that badly there, you just need to choose a shorter route!
I think this is where I was convinced to join Team Mal. Stephen is a little too aggressive when they play (and slightly arrogant at times) for my tastes, so I swapped over.
The only annoying part of this LP is Stephen always trying to blame everything for his losses instead of just admitting Mal was better than him, Mal on the other hand never even once tries to blame the character or the items or anything else. Good on you Mal =D
Well let's just agree to disagree, I for one don't think complaining about everything, rather than admitting defeat, is what makes this LP amusing. But let's just leave it like that.
+Dragonstorm Constantly complaining does not equal good commentary, nor does making excuses as to why he's losing so much. It just makes him sound like a child. I'm just glad he gets better about that later on in the series.
the top speed of all of the characters is 60 kph, (plus cc bonus) with a 100 kph max with mushroom/star. the harder you hit, the longer it takes to get to 60. (the computers speed is relative to your position, so in 2 player, the comps move in tandem with the lead human. meaning an 8th place human is boned unless the lead human screws up)
I know this was posted a long time ago, but you guys need to know the difference between velocity and acceleration. The big guys are not slow; they are very fast, but accelerate slowly...so they are best for very good players who don't hit walls and so forth. Toad and Peach are not the fastest--they just accelerate quickly and are best for bad players...or not so good players.
Fun fact: Yoshi Valley is so twisted the CPU doesn't know how to place all racers into positions, which results in the question mark boxes and the fact there is no position number shown.
BTW I know it is 7 years late but to any future viewer the reason why red shells don't work in Yoshi's Valley is because that stage is a open ended stage where there are multiple paths the players can take and coming 1st depends on which path you took and how fast you made it through that path. Long story short it is because someone on a different path was considered by the game to be in front of Stephen.
You'd be correct Stephen about heavy characters having a higher top speed, the reason the lightweight characters are so popular is because of the high acceleration and the fact you get hit a lot in Mario Kart. However I believe those who are good at powersliding are better off using the heavier characters.
All characters are good in their own way. Lightweights (Toad, Yoshi, Peach) have high acceleration but poor top speed and recover from item hits quickly, so they're ideal for beginners who get hit often. Middleweights (Mario, Luigi) have average acceleration and top speed, so they're good for intermediate/advanced players. Heavyweights (Wario, DK, Bowser) have high top speed but poor acceleration, so they're ideal for players who almost never get hit. I actually play very well with Luigi.
I think you greatly underestimate the impact of lightweight, midweight and heavyweight on winning races. My family used to fight over Wario... why DK was not desired option #2 I will never know.
I love the rainbow road from this game it’s in my top three I love the music and usually it’s a pretty relaxed track and I also love the colored character portraits
Up vote this so Stephen and Mal see this. Stephen won the mushroom cup because in the case of point ties the game looks at race positions as well. If you get 3 first places and fifth in one and your opponent gets three second places and one first you'll both have 27 points but the one with the three firsts will get the better rank overall. Also higher acceleration, lower top speed (light weights) and vice versa (heavy weights), and middleweights are balanced
One time.... when I was in first grade (7 years old) I asked all of my classmates if they had an N64 they asked what it was, we were born in 2001 or 2002 the N64 is apparently an ancient item to them.... here I am, 15 years old today and I've asked other people my age about it, they had no idea what it was.... This just shows having an older sibling who's into gaming a lot can show you the ways of what it's like being nerdier than the modern day nerds today!
Banshie boardwalk... in the DS version, this was actually one of my favorite tracks. There its lighter, and once you memorize the course its REALLY easy, as the AI sucks at it (for some odd reason, the DS AI is notoriously cheating). What helps is Yoshi's weird ability to jump and turn 90 degrees- so instead of turning corners, you only have to jump to face the right way (and thus keep your speed). Overpowered, and the reason Yoshi is the best driver in the entire game (IMHO).
It wasn't luigi's fault, i think playing as toad and thinking that your acceleration was faster (which it was) i think you just had more confidence in yourself.
If Stephen hadn't been in a desparate situation (aka beating Mal won it for him and he was behind by a lot) I would've hoped one of them could attempt Mario Kart's hardest shortcut. In Rainbow Road on the N64 if you have a mushroom and swerve and jump off the left at the start, if done correctly you will cut off almost half of the track.
I had a cheat booklet about 50 N64 games, and on it said that Yoshi/Wario were the fastest racers in the game. I think toad was third or something like that.
Lower weight characters are usually higher tier than the higher ones in item rulesets, so it all depends on the difference in weight between toad and loogi Yes this is a 7 year old comment, i’m just watching this old ass LP now
I still think you weren't driving all that well as luigi (you do know if you press A and B together when you hit a banana, you can stop yourself from skidding, right?). Toad is fast, but the heavy characters are actually have the highest top speed overall, but have a slow accelaration.
Hey Stephen! These videos are really funny and keep me entertained. Quick question, are you guys using the N64 emulator to record this particular part of the series?
It would be great if for every time either Stephen or Mal hit an obstacle on the course, any bets made with family and friends went up by 25 cents or something. Start at a dollar in the Mushroom Cup, then it goes up to around $9 by the end of the Special Cup.
My favorite memory of this game would really have to be when I proved this 'bully' wrong that DK isn't the best character in the game (since it was the only character he would use) and managed to destroy him with Mario XD he was so pissed that he said I only won because I was 'lucky' XD anyway good job Stephen! Although you did have a little bit of trouble XD
Jump off the first edge at at Rainbow Road to the left, and make sure you're going fast enough. With a bit of luck, you can skip roughly 2/7ths of the track.
This is great. :D I assume by now there's a pretty long petition for Diddy Kong Racing Jointventure too. Add my name to the list. XD I suppose Toad is this game's Pipsy. Peach I think might be equivalent to TipTup then since I think she's the second highest accel character and has slightly more weight.
Anyone notice a change in Stephen's tone when he wins? He gets real arrogant, real quick. When he loses, nothing is ever his fault, bad character, bad track. C'mon Stephen, you should be better than this. FYI, Bigger guys have bad acceleration, but very good Top Speed, which is why they do so well.
The only reason I remember MarioKart 64 is because my friend had it and we'd play it when I went to her house. I suck at it but watching this is bringing back so many memories
I was born in '96, a year before this game came out. The only reason I remember this game was because my cousin played this game on his N64 in the early '00s.
Not sure about in the 64 one, but i know that in the later ones the heavier characters have the best top speed but the worst acceleration. Plus the bots have like auto catch up it feels like some times. So it shouldn't be weird seeing dk or bowser being competitive.
when you play double dash competetive you have to choose a combination of drivers and kart by random. because the lokomotive kart is the best and the combination with diddy kong and bowser junior will give you the ebst special items.
I was born in 1999, so I don't remember. I started with double dash, but the newer games bring these courses back. I recognize most of them because of that.
Stephen. I was rooting for Mal all the way through, but now that you chose Toad, I had to switch sides because Toad's my favorite D: So I was happy to see you win with him...though like others have said, it's less of the character, and more of your driving skills. I haven't played MK 64 but if the trend serves, heavy characters have lower acceleration and the highest max speeds. Also Stephen, if you pick Toad in Double Dash, and lose, I'm going to throw a pie at you.
I think the characters are mostly balanced. I always played as Bowser when I was a kid, and I could win all my races, even with my Mom playing as toad, who had a time trial that was about 2 or 3 seconds behind the world record for Mario's Raceway. I used Bowser so that when I started my first race and was in 8th, I would get the starting boost and make everyone in front of me spin out, since Bowser was the heaviest.
I think all of us on Team Mal have to give Stephen props for his comeback on Rainbow Road and Special Cup period. Not bad, not bad. Still rooting for Mal though
I was born after but grew up with my family getting no new systems and no new games until the PS2 I got years later. I grew up on Mario N64 games and Mario Kart 64.
no, Toad is indeed overpowered in MK64.He's not only faster than everyone else, he also turns better.(or maybe he's just a placebo for me too... but I never lost using him)
Stephen took the longest path possible through Yoshi's Valley three times.
and they both missed the shortcut on Rainbow Road
The whole "the bigger guys are slower" idea makes no sense, considering how imbalanced that would be. Toad having top acceleration but also higher top speed would make him completely broken.
Yeah like no one would ever have a good time using the “bigger” characters such as Bowser or DK
They don't seem to understand that the less acceleration characters have a higher max speed.
That’s a very common misconception
I think this is where I was convinced to join Team Mal. Stephen is a little too aggressive when they play (and slightly arrogant at times) for my tastes, so I swapped over.
Stephen is headstrong, but that just makes him able to do Rock Smash.
He isn't arrogant lol, how is he aggressive he just jokes around ur making a lot of assumptions off jokes and playful banter
The only annoying part of this LP is Stephen always trying to blame everything for his losses instead of just admitting Mal was better than him, Mal on the other hand never even once tries to blame the character or the items or anything else. Good on you Mal =D
Totally Agreed. :P Luigi's a very good character,, really.
Well let's just agree to disagree, I for one don't think complaining about everything, rather than admitting defeat, is what makes this LP amusing. But let's just leave it like that.
True true. Stephen you don't have to win everytime! haha but this is still a great LP
***** Trust me, that's neither Joking nor Nostlagia Critic-style "Joking".
+Dragonstorm Constantly complaining does not equal good commentary, nor does making excuses as to why he's losing so much. It just makes him sound like a child. I'm just glad he gets better about that later on in the series.
blaming luigi for being terrible ... lol
Mal is really good, I can't believe she got 4th from that 7th place position, at the last second
the top speed of all of the characters is 60 kph, (plus cc bonus) with a 100 kph max with mushroom/star. the harder you hit, the longer it takes to get to 60. (the computers speed is relative to your position, so in 2 player, the comps move in tandem with the lead human. meaning an 8th place human is boned unless the lead human screws up)
I played the crap out of Mario Kart 64, and it's OLDER than me! That's what we get for taking care of our N64! :D
Same here! :D
I know this was posted a long time ago, but you guys need to know the difference between velocity and acceleration. The big guys are not slow; they are very fast, but accelerate slowly...so they are best for very good players who don't hit walls and so forth. Stephen takes like the worst possible route on Yoshi Valley.
Stephen needs to look up the routes for Yoshi's map. I'm pretty sure the route he took each time was the slowest one.
I think you greatly underestimate the impact of lightweight, midweight and heavyweight on winning races. My family used to fight over Wario... why DK was not desired option #2 I will never know.
I did so many face palms this whole series lol
I love the rainbow road from this game it’s in my top three I love the music and usually it’s a pretty relaxed track and I also love the colored character portraits
Stephen, a bad workman blames his tools
Stephen is a professional at missing item boxes.
"Luigi is such a bad driver!" So much for year of Luigi, I guess xD
Stephen took the longest route in Yoshi's Valley. The second shortest route is the route Mallory was taking.
As to the drinking game about stephen missing an item box....I feel like even I an expierenced drinker would die from it lmao
Banshie boardwalk... in the DS version, this was actually one of my favorite tracks. There its lighter, and once you memorize the course its REALLY easy, as the AI sucks at it (for some odd reason, the DS AI is notoriously cheating). stephen, you kept taking the longest route on yoshi's valley....
Wow, that 2nd race had a ridiculous shortcut and Stephen took the long way 3 times!
lol my friend calls moo moo meadows "cow town" and my brother said that is like calling rainbow road "Rainbow Blvd"
Moo Moo meadows is wii
Toad + Steven = Placebo Effect
Sheesh, Stephen took the longest route every time in Yoshi's Valley.
You took the longest possible way in Yoshi's Valley Stephen, 3 times!!!
Revenge is a dish best served with mushrooms.
[3rd track] On the DS version, this was one of my favorite tracks to be honest. Shocking, huh? XD
Hm. Was kinda hoping Luigi would win once Stephen quit using him.
I had a cheat booklet about 50 N64 games, and on it said that Yoshi/Wario were the fastest racers in the game. I think toad was third or something like that.
The weird thing is...
I don't remember Mario Kart 64...but I have very fond memories of Super Mario Kart.
I loved this LP. Excellent commentary and personalities. I have no idea why people are being negative.
This children, is a lovely example of the placebo effect.
Lower weight characters are usually higher tier than the higher ones in item rulesets, so it all depends on the difference in weight between toad and loogi
Yes this is a 7 year old comment, i’m just watching this old ass LP now
On Rainbow Road, you can actually fly off the big hill at the starting point and land halfway through the track if you angle yourself right.
I still think you weren't driving all that well as luigi (you do know if you press A and B together when you hit a banana, you can stop yourself from skidding, right?). Toad is fast, but the heavy characters are actually have the highest top speed overall, but have a slow accelaration.
Why do you turn on Luigi so fast? D:
rainbow road was my favorite. Especially since you can jump the rail and take the largest shortcut ever
I belived Toad can fly
Hey Stephen! These videos are really funny and keep me entertained. Quick question, are you guys using the N64 emulator to record this particular part of the series?
This is one of the few Mario Kart LP's where people are proud of themselves for getting in 4th.
It would be great if for every time either Stephen or Mal hit an obstacle on the course, any bets made with family and friends went up by 25 cents or something. Start at a dollar in the Mushroom Cup, then it goes up to around $9 by the end of the Special Cup.
You say it's Toad, I say it's luck.
1997? The year I was born...
No one can catch me on Rainbow Road. My mini-turbo chaining causes me to be impossibly ahead. I've lapped on this from my mini-turbo chaining.
My guess is that the next video is completed but not scheduled to be released to the public until a date in the near future.
My favorite memory of this game would really have to be when I proved this 'bully' wrong that DK isn't the best character in the game (since it was the only character he would use) and managed to destroy him with Mario XD he was so pissed that he said I only won because I was 'lucky' XD anyway good job Stephen! Jump off the first edge at at Rainbow Road to the left, and make sure you're going fast enough. With a bit of luck, you can skip roughly 2/7ths of the track.
18:01 Toad is way freaking better than Luigi. OBJECTION!
i remember a cheating short cut on rainbow road.
Yoshi was the fastest contestant through Mario Kart 64.
This is great. :D I assume by now there's a pretty long petition for Diddy Kong Racing Jointventure too. Add my name to the list. XD
I suppose Toad is this game's Pipsy. Peach I think might be equivalent to TipTup then since I think she's the second highest accel character and has slightly more weight.

The only reason I remember MarioKart 64 is because my friend had it and we'd play it when I went to her house. I suck at it but watching this is bringing back so many memories
so tense that whole last lap
while I am old enough to remember, I sadly had no exposure to this. I had a ps1 at the time this was out
I some how randomly got extra hard. It doesn't say any cc because it's the same thing it's just the stage turned the other direction.
I was born in '96, a year before this game came out. The only reason I remember this game was because my cousin played this game on his N64 in the early '00s.
I'm watching this on my phone cuz I have no internet @ home and its load rate is soooo slow...any tips to load faster???
Weight only effects how hard you hit people
Not sure about in the 64 one, but i know that in the later ones the heavier characters have the best top speed but the worst acceleration. Plus the bots have like auto catch up it feels like some times. So it shouldn't be weird seeing dk or bowser being competitive.
It was 1 year before I was born, but I have fonder memories with MarioKart Double-Dash and Pokemon Red
Stephen is waaay to cocky in this video!
haha Suspenseful episode and I've laughed just as much. Loved it!
chugga hacking their console and plays as DK? priceless lol
I would really like to play this, but I am only 12. Is this available on Wii Virtual Console?
I wonder what Rainbow Road would've been like if they took the ultra shortcut every time.
when you play double dash competetive you have to choose a combination of drivers and kart by random. because the lokomotive kart is the best and the combination with diddy kong and bowser junior will give you the ebst special items.
I was born in 1999, so I don't remember. I started with double dash, but the newer games bring these courses back. I recognize most of them because of that.
When they were on Rainbow road that had to be the most excited I've been playing/watching mario kart 64
I'm one of those who is too young to remember as I was born in 97 and I grew up instead playing double dash
peach was always my go to char. in this game.
8:12 lol I was born 5 years after mk64 came out
I'm 16 years old. I was born in 1997, and I remember playing this game since I was two. No joke.
11:40 wario just flew off into space
Well, a good gamer always meets up with good games, even if they were released before the gamer in question was born.
Banshee Boardwalk was my Fav to race on because of the Music!
I can remember the game so well .
Stephen. I was rooting for Mal all the way through, but now that you chose Toad, I had to switch sides because Toad's my favorite D: So I was happy to see you win with him...though like others have said, it's less of the character, and more of your driving skills. My first system was a nes in 2000 and then I got a ps2 and it blew my mind
You can always see the 4th place in the back in the hills
Me and my neighborhood crew of friends played so much of Mario Kart 64. Still one of my favorite Mario Kart games. :D
I think Mal let Stephen win one so she could kick his butt later
So are you saying that Toad is no better than Luigi? Just curious, I don't know much about MK64
It's nice to finally watch games I never got the chance to play growing up. ^-^
This game came out in '97? 2 years before I was even born.
There is evidence IN THIS VIDEO that peach and toad have much higher acceleration than the other characters.
11:54 bomb dropped DK on Mal's side
Feels like Stephen needs to lose a point cuz the chnge to an OP character, Seems only fair really
no, Toad is indeed overpowered in MK64.He's not only faster than everyone else, he also turns better.(or maybe he's just a placebo for me too... but I never lost using him)
