For the sake of reference for the viewers since it won't matter for Stephen and Mal, the "heavier" characters have less acceleration, but higher top speed. If you have a higher top speed, you get to pass people slightly easier. However, if you get hit, it hurts you more because it takes longer to get back up to speed.
I know I’m a bit late, but actually Mario Kart 64 is extremely unbalanced and because of that character choice definitely matters. In mario kart 64 Peach and Toad are the two fastest (in that order) for the first 14 seconds, after which the heavyweights, Bowser, DK, and Wario pass Toad but not Peach. At 18 seconds Bowser passes Peach, but the other two heavyweights don’t pass her until 24 seconds. Meanwhile Luigi is 4th fastest until a measly 4 seconds, where he falls to 2nd slowest just above Mario and remains there forever. But yes, in every other Mario Kart, the character you choose is mostly preference.
Conversely, the light racers like Peach and Toad actually have the LOWEST Top Speed, but the make up for it by having really nice acceleration, allowing them to recover much faster.
Did you know that as of the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Wario Stadium is the only Mario Kart 64 track that has not appeared as a retro track? Well, now you know. 😊
Hey Stephen here's a little tip: when u run into a fake item box, banana peel, hit with a green, red and/or blue shell and etc., rapidly press the accelerate button to give yourself a quicker takeoff. Had to throw that out there because I just can't help but to feel really bad for you.
One thing on a DS breaks with over-use: the shoulder buttons. In Mystery Dungeon, many things are mapped to the left shoulder button, and now it is utterly broken. And I did take good care of it, it had a use limit -.-
You may have known but if you get 4th place in the points, at the end you get a special cutscene where you see the top 3 on the podium and then you get bombed.
I know this is way wayy late but the reason Stephen isn't doing to well is he's not cutting the corners enough and bumping into the walls too much because he's trying too hard to do the boosts. It's actually faster to not try the boosts if you're not that good at them. basically if you bump into something you lose the advantage a boost would've given you.
Stephen's going to win the entire mario kart race. Mario kart 64 will give Mal a 2 point advantage, but Stephen says that he's good at newer mario karts and I believe him. If he's not lying or he isn't lucky then Stephen will lose, but I think that he'll win.
also, I think you actually lose some speed when you slide, which also means Mal, who didn't slide much, was actually faster around the corners. 50cc and 100cc are actually beatable without the slide, but you need to slide for 150cc to win against the cpus.
In one of the episodes I commented that I come from a family where we root for the underdogs, so that's why I root for Stephen. I forgot to mention that rage and depression appears a lot in my family's personality.
Poor Stephen, getting owned by your own wife.... (Very hilarious, though) P.S. Yoshi is a lightweight character in this MK64. Not sure if he's heavier and slower than Peach and Toad (As he is in Super Circuit), but he's still considered a lightweight. At least in this game.
Actually Stephen, from my understanding, heavyweights like Wario, DK, and Bowser are actually the FASTEST racers - in terms of Top Speed. Their karts can hit a higher top speed than lighter karts, but they have terrible acceleration, so it takes a while to get that speed up.
If MK64 works like some of the other MK games as far as the driver stats, Peach has a lower top speed compared to Luigi but a faster acceleration. So if Steven can manage to go longer without hitting things, he'll be going faster than Mal, but he has a harder time if he is hit. (Then again, this might be irrelevant in this game)
True. And the heavy weights that keep screwing up everyone have the best top speed, and the computer is controlling them, so they don't run into many things.
Hey, here's a suggestion, so you don't have to redo races: Have your OWN scoring system, where you get a number of points equal to your place in the race, and then, when you've done all the tracks, you add up all your cumulative points, and then the lowest score wins (like in golf).
Big fan of Warios Stadium and Royal Raceway, would have loved to see them as retros for the Wii. Coming up, ALL about the Yoshi's valley, probably second favourite after royal raceway (maybe even fav), with Warrior Stadium and Rainbow Road rounding out my ideal top 4. Banshee Boardwalk is pure evil though, I am expecting that to be very amusing.
my best character in 64 was bowser... I never had trouble getting first in a cup below 150cc with him because all you do is ram people on one tire and they magically get out of your way... rather than Stephen having to duck and dodge people, I feel he would enjoy that play style more... I highly recommend he try it in practice as the speed difference isn't as noticeable or useful as the weight advantage.
Your batteries are below the minimum voltage threshold. You'll need to get them replaced. Still, that isn't a problem with Nintendo products - anything with a Lithium-Ion battery will have battery trouble if you let the batteries discharge too much.
The way the weights work in Mario Kart. Light weights have very good acceleration but not a very good top speed. The heavy weights are the exact opposite.
Ah, the days before heavies were objectively better (acceleration was the most important stat until Wii). I think Peach is a middle-weight with the acceleration of a light-weight. Though the source I read that from may have been dubious...
What would have happened if they didn't place AGAIN? Like, Mal was struggling to get 4th in the retry race, but what if she failed? What if she got 5th and Stephen got 8th in the retry race?

That IS scary how Mal sounds exactly like Peach! O.O

Is not that scary
Ya know, stephen was LIGHTYEARS behind mal, so thats probably why it took so long for the spiney
