The other thing I really like to do after I warm up is a small petite allegro. Normally in first, second, second to fifth (land in second). It really wakes me up on tired days.

I totally agree with the no splits and heel stretching before class. Like why would you do that to yourself. I have been looking for a video as a resource. Thank you for I have found it.

I've just started doing ballet a couple of months ago, because I love musical theatre and I'm such a bad dancer, and your videos are SO amazing! Thank you so much for doing these videos. I am a homeschooling mom of three kids and could never get out of the house consistently to take a class. But, I also have scoliosis and years ago I found that ballet helped my back tremendously. It increases my mobility and reduces daily pain incredibly well. I have been doing your barre workout, my three year old daughter does them with me. It is one of the favorite parts of my day.

Wonderful and inspirational! I will definitely use this before class :D
May I point out the importance of breathing correctly when doing all this kinds of exercises? It relaxes the muscles and oxygenates them so they are even more prepared and awake for class ^^
Thank you for your work, Kathryn! I can't thank you enough :D

I love, love, love this video. I am not a ballerina, although I am a former dancer and now mom. My body and alignment have been really effected by childbirth and while I've been running and doing weights since my last child was born, I really haven't been taking care of my body properly. I stumbled across your barre class a few weeks ago and ever since I've been hooked. I always wanted to take ballet (I did a few years as little girl) and it is so fun and incredibly helpful for my posture and alignment. But this stretch routine really makes all the difference in the world! I have NOT been taking care of my hips or stretching properly and even if I'm doing a different workout I always do these stretches now. Your videos are so helpful and really making a huge difference in my life! Thank you Kathryn.

Hi Kathryn, I developed a sesamoiditis injury in 2014 and it has been a long slow road of healing with dance. The injury came from salsa dancing, progressing too fast/too much without proper attention to alignment of my left lower extremity. I am taking my first ballet class today and really look forward to slowly progressing the strength from the ground up and the torso down. Your instruction is excellent- thank you!

I've been confused for a long time how to warm up before classes, because i normally do the splits just after very simple warm ups and since the winter comes again it's getting harder and harder to get my feet and legs warmed up, and i often get hurt in the hip only from warm up! Now i am tring you warm ups, and hopefully it could even help my tretching! Thank you Kathryn!!

Hullo! I love these videos and this channel and have watched with so much admiration. I'm ill, was diagnosed at 12 with a chronic pain illness. So the whole world of, well, active life has been outside of my range of experience in adulthood. One thing I thought I'd mention is, being ill as I am, and having a father who's now an interventional pain management doctor, there is a really good reason the tennis ball helps more than a foam roller! The muscle can develop trigger points, which are like tiny little intense muscle spasms. They're often at the heart of a wider muscle spasm. They rely on the oxygen brought to them in red blood cells to have the energy to stay tense. When you press pretty hard on that nodule for a few minutes, it's getting less blood flow to it and the store of oxygen is depleted. It can no longer stay in spasm and relaxes. Traction is also helpful. I both press trigger points and use traction with a neck brace (they cause migraines when in my neck). Be wary though, because they tend to reform. So if you get rid of one in an area, be on the lookout for like a week to get it again if it reforms. Also using heat on the area is helpful before you press. It helps the muscle from taking too much offense. 😅 I used to not be able to sleep sometimes, the pain from trigger points in my low back and hips would be so bad. I'd have to sleep wrapped in a heating pad and I'd wake up as soon as it shut off. I couldn't stay in the same position, but I also can't sleep on my back, and the other side often hurt quite a bit as well. There was just no way to rest that didn't hurt. I felt trapped and desperate. I'd wake up about a dozen times a night in just paralyzing pain. Then I finally started getting control of the situation and dealing with the trigger points. The ones I couldn't fix had to be injected (OW) but at least I was able to sleep soon after. I just wanted to say, there's really solid logic behind why the tennis ball is more helpful toward getting that tension out. The foam roller doesn't specifically target the trigger point like a tennis ball would, so though it helps wake the muscle up, it's not performing the same aid, therapeutically. Thank you for the time and effort in your videos. As someone who struggles, post diagnosis, I really feel for the journey you've been on. The good thing is, once you know what's going on with your body, you can start to fight to regain ground you've lost and redefine your new normal. Some people are lucky and diagnosed quickly, and others search for years, but as long as you keep fighting to define your own life and not let your health define you, there is good reason to hope tomorrow can be a brighter day. We're all with you!

Hey! I really love your videos, especially the ballet videos! Today was the last school day here in germany and so the holidays have started. I want to ask if you can do an all around workout, what we can do everyday, so that it isn't so difficult to get used to the ballet lessons after the holidays. Or maybe you have some advice what we can do in general in holidays, to dont get out of practice. That would be so great!

Thank you for this! I was really hoping you'd do this one. One thing I like to do is a quick foot massage where you sort of wring the arches and pull apart the toes, and then roll around the muscles on the calves and thighs with my hands just to get them feeling warmer. It's hard to explain without doing it, but when I finish one leg, it feels a little tingly and warm and longer than the other!

Also, I feel like it would be good to make an intro, where you clearly states that one should not do big stretches before class.. and then, for the people who want to use it multiple times we dont have to hear it many times every time. Hi Katie, I've been doing splits and the things you said were dangerous to do before class for I think as long as I've been dancing as a warm up. If i don't so it, I feel like when I do my adage and grand battement I won't be able to do them to as good as I can. What should I do?

    • @betsykirkland418
      @betsykirkland418 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Elizabeth Feng another reason it is bad to stretch (and I mean Really Stretch) before class is that it has been proven scientifically that any excessive stretching before a workout will decrease the amount of power in your muscles. The stretching them out slows your muscles reaction time almost in half!

I know what you mean I feel the same way what you could do is do some other hip stretches and such before barre and then in between combinations if your studio doesn’t already do then do like a foot in hand stretch before adagio and such😊💕

Thank you for this awesome video! I will admit that I had gotten a little distracted with the "Phantom" medley, but I went back and re-watched the video so that I heard all of the info you were explaining. Right now I am trying to work on my flexibility, and was wondering if it is alright if I stretch along with various stretching videos for about 20 minutes and then go into a half split sort of thing? I found some videos that told me to lean against a wall and do a split-type-thing for a little bit. I have been doing that for a couple days and I think I see some improvement. The side of one knee does ache a little afterwards, but not to a point where there is significant pain. Is what I am doing harmful?

This video was pretty helpful. I've been looking for some ideas for dynamic stretches before class. But is is it just me or does it seem like most dancers never do any sort of dynamic stetches before class? Wouldn't it be better to avoid static stretches all together before class?

Stretching after any sort of exercise will help prevent sore muscles! make sure you are warm(as always) before any sort of stretching and that should help! I also suggest massaging/rolling out the muscles if you have a foam roller, or taking a warm shower to loosen the muscles 🙂

I'm not a dancer, but how do you not hurt your knees doing some of these stretches? Is it because the muscles are strong and therefore support? or because the muscles aroind the knees are more flexible than the average person?
if i did that I'd hurt my knees, but I have some medical conditions so I'm not sure what's normal/abnormal anymore.

Fandom Geek But, what does a plank have to do with you being able to stand en pointe?

Chelsey Evers Standing and dancing en pointe requires a lot of core strength.

Rainier Herczeg well, didn’t know some people had to plank 3 min to prove their ready. Guess you kinda have to deal with it, sucks though. Good luck ❤️

Loved the video!! What are the mats on your floor? Are they for dance? If so where did you get them?

Katie, do you sell dance music CDs? I'd love to purchase your CDs. It's hard to find good ballet music with extended selections. You play so beautifully.

Loana de Motonui One of them was a PotO medley, you're right! 😅 I just love that musical! I saw the touring company last year in Memphis after they updated the show and it was fabulous! During the title song, Christine and Erik walked down the outside of a circular tower and the steps slowly came out of the wall as they walked down and the retracted after they had stepped off them! 😱 So cool! I was practically bouncing in me seat, I was so excited. 😅 I really hope I can see it again one day!

How long does this usually take if you were to do all the stretches?

It's difficult to work through this while watching the video (for obvious multitasking reasons) - would you consider transcribing the warm-up and posting that too? So that it's easier to memorise and work on

I've been told to do at least 5 minutes of cardio and then intensely stretch before class in the morning so that your working to your extreme in class. What do you think?
