I am not a ballet dancer, I am Irish dancer, but we too have an unhealthy obsession with turn-out. I found these exercises SOO helpful. So, here's the Irish dancer endorsement on this video: I, as a competition Irish dancer, approve this message. :-)
Brilliant routine. Thank you so much. I'm 47 and have struggled with turnout for years. This feels like it is doing something. Twice a day is my intention.
I did this once, and I already noticed a HUGE difference in my turnout. Even my fondues and developés(?) got so much better! I did this today and I'm so excited to see how much I will improve 😊😊 gonna make this part of my routine for sure 💖💖
I absolutely love all of your workouts! I've been doing your 20 min. leg toning video everyday - in addition to these technique-related workouts, such as this one - I've noticed SUCH an improvement in my technique overall. The information you give us throughout all of these workouts is so valuable, even those tiny adjustments you suggest for stretches I've done for years - it makes ALL the difference! Plus, you're a very kind and sophisticated young lady - thus; I never grow tired of following along with your videos. I am so grateful for your help & for being such the ideal role model to me and obviously so many others! Thank you Katie!
im so glad I found your channel. I stopped ballet for two years and i lost all my technique and strength... it was a mistake to stop especially cuz i want a career :/ your videos are going to help me so much!!! THANK YOU for making videos
This is SO HARD for me to get through even without any resistance bands! I can’t wait until I look back at my progress one day when I need bands to make this challenging! I have so much room for improvement
I am a dancer with turnout problems and was watching this video to try and help improve my turnout so I could get my pointe shoes. Within a year of doing these exercises everyday I got my pointe shoes. I recommend this video for anyone with turnout problems trying to meet there goals.💃
I've only done this 3/4 time and I've already noticed a huge difference! I could never hold my turnout in fourth and I just took a class today and it was so much easier! I guess I'm finally using the correct muscles. Thanks!
Thank you so much 😘I'm 11 and I just started ballet and it's hard because Me and this other girl are the only ones who don't have natural turn out. Thanks
I have a big problem with my lack of turnout and tight hips and I'm really exited to start these exercises! it would be amazing if you could do a video on loosening hips and opening them up! thanks! you are such an inspiration!
I love your videos!! Every time I have a ballet problem/question, I immediately check to see if there's a Kathryn Morgan video on it. XD Thanks so much for all your help! I'm going to start doing these exercises every day starting today! :)
Dear Kathryn, I started dancing with over 40 now and find your videos so helpful. You are a very exact teacher. I can keep your lessons good in my mind. After a life of no sports but lot of work and doing fixings home alone transformed my body in one of a construction worker. At least that's what I felt today in my sports clothes in the big mirror. Ouch .... My turnout is like practically non existing I don't even know until today that this is the name for it if my knees stuck together by plie. I'm gonna do my homework now here "with you" and going with a better feeling into my next lessons and next summer I might feel more comfortable in short pants once my knees and legs look more straight. Thanks a lot!!!
Hey Kathryn, your videos really helped me. I like how you get to the pointe (pun intended). You seem to be able to teach me effectively whereas I find a lot of videos on the internet hard to follow or incomplete. Great work!
What kinda magic is this?😱 I’m coming back to dance after a long break and my turn out was terrible. Did a few reps on ONE leg and my turnout is double! Thank u so much💙
Thankyou so much Kathryn!! I have returned to ballet class after a long time away. I love this quote of Peter Martins; "Ballet is for each dancer a private affair of the soul" ... I am a happier person since reconnecting with ballet. What you teach is so appreciated !! You explain things so well , you are very clear and motivating! Everything you teach that I practice is helping me to regain and improve technique. Can't thank you enough, All the Best to you !! Susan Ahlquist
I'm so glad I found this. When my teacher says something about my turn out and turns it out more with her hand, I don't feel a thing and it goes smoothly. No stretch, nothing, but I can't keep it there! It's so frustrating. I hope that this will help. All the comments are positive so I expect great things :)
thank you so much for these videos. you make ballet accessible to late twenty somethings (like me) who dreamed of being ballerinas, but never had access to formal training. you really are such a delight to watch. thank you!!
I love your videos! They are so insightful! Could you please do a video on how to improve extension--I have decent flexibility, but when I do a develope my leg is barely above 90*. If I really try to push the hight I feel like I am gripping and my quads want to take over. How can I overcome this? Thank u!! A general flexibility one, and how to improve arabesque would be appreciated also!:)
I'm literally sitting here with a notebook and pencil writing these and doing them. I recently moved ballet schools and there is a way bigger emphasis on turnout than my old one. so I'm here at your channel seeking help. ThaNK YOU KM! love your videos!
I have class/rehearsals all this week, and I read some comments saying this helped the first time. Hopefully I’ll see a difference, my turnout is rly weak!
I have very very loose hips, apparently according to my teacher I have something that naturally makes my hips very flexible. Although, with this it means I have very very weak hips. So hopefully after doing this regularly I can strengthen them. When I was following along, I could REALLY feel the burn, so I am hopeful. Thanks for such a good, helpful video xx❤😶
thanks so much for uploading this video! can you do one for inner thighs as well? my teacher tells me turnout and inner thighs are interconnected and its difficult for me to work both turnout and inner thighs when im weak at them both
Hello Kathryn, I'd like to say your videos are extremely helpful! thank you very much for giving us so much information for free. My turnout improved wonderfully thanks to you - I've been turning out wrong all along and NOW I know where is right to feel it :) I do the exercises you taught everyday now. I was wondering if you could do a video on improving extensions? I've been trying to get my leg extensions higher for a while but nothing seems to work. My flexibility is OK, I can hold my leg above my head with my hand but when it comes to developpé? It only goes as high as hip level and feels kind of clumsy and heavy even though I'm using all my strength! :( Not a good developpé at all! Thanks in advance, and have a great day! xoxo
I really loved this video! It is great and the standing exercises i'd never heard of before have been really helpful! I was wondering if you could do a back strengthening and loosening workout for getting a higher arabesque as i really struggle with arabesque and keeping them square- thank you :)
I can't believe how good this is! Great help and always welcomed progress, thank you :-) Especially when I need to start moving again after unwanted break caused by too much work and winter hypochondria - it's so much easier with these exercises and you of course. I thought I'll do it without the video eventually but your video company is just pleasant...
Thank you so much for these tips! My hips are naturally turned inwards and my turnout is horrible (Something that was genetically passed down to me) and the doctors kept saying "She'll grow out of that", but I never did. We finally went to an orthopedist because the doctors were of no help and she told me that the doctors should have sent me to a special type of physiotherapy as soon as the problem occured. She also told me that ballet is one of the best things I can do right now to solve this problem, but seeing all the others having better turnouts than me just frustrated me and I developed certain techniques to make my turnout appear better than it actually is (Which is actually counterproductive). Your exercises just helped me so much, thank you for those
This is great! Thank you. I would love some exercises and advice concerning back flexibility (I am awful at arabesques, penchés, you name it). A workout like this would be great! Thanks so much!
only just watching this now! thank you so much for helping us all. i always check your channel whenever i need help or am not sure about something. thank you for being my ballet big sister x
This is so helpful, thank you. I'm not a dancer; just a regular adult who is trying hard to gain weight and become more fit, and one of the things I want to get into is skating, and turnout is so essential in skating!
Lolly LuLa I've tried that (one of the first things recommended by my dietitian) and it made me lose weight. I'm on a high carb high protein diet and that helps me maintain the weight at least. Now to find something that makes me gain some...
Lovely!! Thank you! I have been doing these exercises for the last three weeks. I feel like my turn out muscles are stronger. I skipped the last part with the turn out discs. If you are taking suggestions for videos I would like to see pas de basque.
The Clamshell is an exercise I was doing for my arthritic knee in Physical Therapy! I am an adult (48....ancient really!) but love this video, very helpful even though i'm not in ballet class at this point in life.
Very grateful for this one as well! Being a late-start dancer, I've never had great turnout (and bad habits from my first try at ballet when I was 11). Do you know if there's much hope to improve turnout as an adult when your bone structure isn't very naturally open?
lol this was 2 months ago but still.. I wanna help :) I started when I was 10 and because of my naturally tight hips, my turnout was horrible. What exercise really helped me was go to the barre (or a chair depending on what you have around you) extend your leg into tendu, turn in using your hip and not your knee then turn out as much as you can. do this in the front, side and back and that is it! It really helped me so I'm hoping it'll help you! :)
Another great exercise that targets your standing leg (because keeping that turned out is really hard): Stand with your shoulder towards your mirror, feet in parallel. Now lift the foot that's towards the mirror into a retiré and turn it out slowly. Next, turn out your standing leg. Don't move your foot, just turn out your leg slowly, swivelling your body towards the mirror. Use a chair for balance, but only use the turnout muscles in your standing leg to turn and hold that position. Make sure that you keep your standing foot arched, and don't let that working foot turn into a banana. Hold this position for ten, twenty seconds. Rélevé if you like. Then slowly swivel back. Repeat or switch feet.
Wonderful - much needed and appreciated - thanks! Do you have a workout for feet? Mine always look somewhat sickled and I can't get my toes stretched under.
Hi Katie! Thanks so much for this awesome video, I did the workout yesterday and loved it! Do you have any plans for doing an exercise video to help improve extension? I'm working on getting a higher extension a la seconde but it's going reeeeeallly slow. Any exercises and/or advice for that would be wonderful. Thank you again for all these great videos!
Thank you so much for this video, it is really helpful! At the rond de jambes at 16:00 are you supposed to keep your hips turned forward and squared or should they rotate along with your leg when itgoes to theback? Love from Belgium!
It was a really nice workout, specially the exercises with the boards! What I found out is that I can turn out easily 180° when flexing my knees but it's so hard to mantain it with straight legs! Does anyone know why it happens? Or any tips for that? Thanks a lot❣
Hi, Katie! I love this workout, and this one especially. I have a question about the turn-out disks: is there only one disk in the package, or two? In other words, do they come in pairs? Thanks!
I am not a ballet dancer, I am Irish dancer, but we too have an unhealthy obsession with turn-out. I found these exercises SOO helpful. So, here's the Irish dancer endorsement on this video: I, as a competition Irish dancer, approve this message. :-)
ghillies4life I am also an Irish dancer and I struggle with turnout so I will have to try this

Resistance I am so glad this has helped!

same but i was on a 8 year hiatus
Same boat
I just came back from a 2 year break as well, trying to get my turnout back!
@@ulvenkun2618 I know your comment is a bit old but i was on hiatus 8 years as well & just gettin back into it :)
This is SO HARD for me to get through even without any resistance bands! I can’t wait until I look back at my progress one day when I need bands to make this challenging! I have so much room for improvement

I really appreciate the emphasis on taking things slowly. I feel great and will be watching this video again!
I've only done this 3/4 time and I've already noticed a huge difference! I could never hold my turnout in fourth and I just took a class today and it was so much easier! I guess I'm finally using the correct muscles. Thanks!
Thank you so much! Most people only talk about flexibility for hips, so thank you for the strength! I really need this!!!
Thank you so much 😘I'm 11 and I just started ballet and it's hard because Me and this other girl are the only ones who don't have natural turn out. Thanks

AriRHen Thank you so much!
You have helped me so much Kathryn, I wish there was something I could do for you!
seriously, this is the greatest! so helpful for those of us not in professional programs. thanks!!
Hey Kathryn, your videos really helped me. I like how you get to the pointe (pun intended). You seem to be able to teach me effectively whereas I find a lot of videos on the internet hard to follow or incomplete. Great work!
im in colorguard as a dancer (basically jazz) and my director always complains about my turnout so this is super helpful!

When I do hip circles, my hips crack or like I hear bones moving and it's a tad painful. I'm assuming my hips are really tight??
Brenda - go to a chiropractor and get a placement done, it really helps (or ask anyone who went to school in that field)
Check for hip-dysplesia.
Thank you so much for these videos! they have been extremely helpful! Great job!
lartpourlartana Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I’m so grateful for your videos!
Could you do other exercises and workouts with the theraband, balance disc and balance board? Thank you so much

thanks! great workout! 💖
I just wanted to work on my turnout, so thanks for uploading this awsome video.
Thank you so much for this video! This is exactly what i needed. Can i make a request about inner thighs?
I am often told that i need to engage those
I found this very helpful! Thank you!!! :)
This is so helpful, thank you. I'm not a dancer; just a regular adult who is trying hard to gain weight and become more fit, and one of the things I want to get into is skating, and turnout is so essential in skating!

Hi Kathryn! I liked this exercises and I use them often! My but it's geting strong!
The Clamshell is an exercise I was doing for my arthritic knee in Physical Therapy! I am an adult (48....ancient really!) but love this video, very helpful even though i'm not in ballet class at this point in life.
charlottesmom Thank you! Yes- the clamshell is a good one. So glad this is helpful.

Could you do a barre workout for Adage/Adagio? I want to improve my extension but I'm not sure how to go about it.
This was absolutely fabulous! Thank you darling :* Xx

Amazing Katrhyn! this is so helpful for me, thanks from Argentina :)
karen alvarez You are so welcome!
I have an internally rotated femur and imma try these to see if it helps restore it to normal position!
Excellent exercises. Tks!
Could you add this to your Workouts playlist? Thanks!
Wonderful - much needed and appreciated - thanks! Do you have a workout for feet? Mine always look somewhat sickled and I can't get my toes stretched under.
Please do a warm up for stretching video
Pink Pointe Yes! Will definitely be doing an extension video.
I heard Les Mis and it made me so happy!!
i love you so much your helping me so much
This is such an old video haha but I just wanted to say thank you so much for this! It really helps :)
Thank you so much for this video, it is really helpful! At the rond de jambes at 16:00 are you supposed to keep your hips turned forward and squared or should they rotate along with your leg when itgoes to theback? Love from Belgium!
Chloooooooooe Your hips should stay squared. And thank you!
I love your makeup look for this video, and would love to know what products you used, or a tutorial of course :)
Juliette Dupre Thank you!
I was listening to the background music when I realized this is what my teacher uses for plies in class
It was a really nice workout, specially the exercises with the boards! What I found out is that I can turn out easily 180° when flexing my knees but it's so hard to mantain it with straight legs! Does anyone know why it happens? Or any tips for that? Thanks a lot❣
I was wondering if you could do a mat Pilates video that we could do at home.
Mimi Schmidt Yes! Fantastic idea thank you!
Hi kathryn i love this video their so helpful btw can you do a video how to improve an arabesque in ballet?
Gilbert Alferdo Yes! I will definitely do that.
Thankyou so much Kathryn! You are the best!!! Can you please answer my question on your blog on the injuries blog. Thankyou!
My hips are open, but I’m a not turned out
thank you so much!!
Hi Kathryn!! PLS ANSWER THIS!!!! Do the discs need to have resistance? Is it better if they have? Is it worse? Thankyouu I loooove your videos!
suggestions for doing this when you have wall to wall carpet?
Thank you!
Hi, Katie! I love this workout, and this one especially. I have a question about the turn-out disks: is there only one disk in the package, or two? In other words, do they come in pairs? Thanks!
Do you recommend partner stretching at all? What are your thoughts on it? If you do believe in it, could you post a video of it?
