Terminator 3: The Most Prophetic Entry in the Franchise

  • The Terminator franchise is well known for its cynical exploration of advanced robotics and artificial intelligence.
Since Arnold Schwarzenegger first said “I’ll be back” in 1984’s The Terminator, the series has grossed over $1.4 billion globally with enduring appeal and relevance.
The series brought the chilling notion of AI dominance into the zeitgeist. Conceived by James Cameron, The Terminator’s aesthetic is arguably the default portrayal of sentient machines in popular culture to this day.
The franchise frequently comes up during contemporary discussions surrounding smart automation and machine learning in Industry 4.0.
The first entry and its blockbuster sequel, 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, tend to dominate that discourse. The standard the first two movies set was too high for the other four films and TV series to overcome.
Objectively, however, the most prophetic entry in terms of its portrayal of today’s technology is easily Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
Jonathan Mostow took over as director for the 2003 film because Cameron felt there was nothing else to add to the story after T2.
While it raked in a respectable $433 million worldwide, the reviews were mixed. Critics and fans felt it lacked the depth and groundbreaking FX that made the other two entries special.
Arnold was back though, as a good guy again, with his T-850 facing off against the first female Terminator, the T-X, played by Kristanna Loken.
Nick Stahl took over as John Connor for Edward Furlong, who had personal issues and professional concerns. A new character critical to the ongoing saga, Kate Brewster, is introduced, portrayed by Claire Daines.
In a futuristic 2004, the fully grown Connor lives off the grid believing he averted a mankind-ending future war.

I don't care what people say, 2024 and I still have a crush on Kristanna Loken because of this movie.

I'll say this about Terminator 3: It's the only film in the franchise that successfully completed a trilogy. It was also the last profitable movie in Schwarzenegger's film career.

The Elton John glasses skit made me cringe. The Tx with the tongue DNA sampler made me cringe as she's trying to be Robert Patrick, the Kate Brewster acting skills made me cringe, the dollar store John Connor made me cringe, wimp is supposed to be a world leader but running like a little girl. The Terminator holding a wobbly coffin that's obviously on deleted wires made me cringe, the plot was flimsy and contradicted the previous 2 movies in many places. Some massive continuity errors on top of the plot armor.
All the AI tech and air combat technology described in T3 was already present in the previous films, just rehashed differently.

This comment made me cringe. It is a scfi movie do not take it so serious. Yeah it is not as good as the first two but it is better than the newer ones. Also the idea of showing the world go to hell at the end was awesome.

Bad to the Bone was cringe, sarah connor in T2 was cringe, kid version of john connor was annoying, T2's story was absolutely abysmal the worst in the franchise actually it completely contradictided the original in every way, plus it had excessive plot armor. T3>T2 all day every day.

It's an awful film that dumps on the original concept. Skynet was a military AI system that replaced pilots and defence systems. It worked perfectly well, so they rolled it out everywhere until it became self aware, as soon as they realised this they tried to unplug it but Skynet defended itself against humans.
So instead of that happening Skynet is a new untested system and when they try to put it live a computer virus takes over everything and it just starts attacking humans, the futuristic sky tanks are already there. It's junk.
The only idea that was good was that the whole Sarah Connor story that we know was always a corrupted timeline which brought forward Judgement Day, without that the original development was longer and happened anyway. We could have had the film start with the development of the CPU that started it off, we could have seen all kinds of greatness about how amazing the system performs, how it builds support and trust. Governments signing off for it to be rolled out further. Everything could be awesome until the panic. That could have been the movie, it didn't need any time travelling or Arnie, any of the original people. Split the film into 2 parts, the rise and the fall, it could have been amazing. But instead we just get endless junk hoping to cash in on the originals
