I think the main cause of this controversy is the fat controllers last line. “we shall take away your rails and leave you here for ALWAYS and ALWAYS and ALWAYS!” implying that henry punishment was permanent which to be fair kind of paints the fat controller in a bad image even though we know the fat controller isn’t like that and henry *did* get out of the tunnel.
They should’ve replaced the two episodes with an original that introduced Henry and show his dynamic with Edward and Gordon. The episode itself it’s just loss in translation in general.
The real truth is that William Middleton did not give a flying ____ about illustrating “dirty, old locomotives,” therefore he didn’t put too much effort into his illustrations. Hence why Henry looks like… that… and also the reason why the best line in the IOS book exists.
