  • A lot changes in just over 4 years...
In this video I upgrade a computer I built in early 2011 (Intel Core2Duo E8400, Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2D Socket 775, 4GB DDR2 RAM, Windows XP) to a much more modern system using the parts listed below.
Upgrading a computer is extremely similar to building a new computer, only it's cheaper (since you don't have to buy any part) and it requires removing some parts prior to installing new ones. Other than that, it's pretty much the same process.
Is it time to upgrade YOUR computer?
    PARTS LIST:
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97M-HD3
    amzn.to/2BoyYh3
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4790
    amzn.to/2Apww9Z
    RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
    amzn.to/2kLHvmT
PSU: Corsair Builder Series CX 430
    amzn.to/2BrHMme
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III
    amzn.to/2kOPUq0
ODD: Lite-On Super AllWrite 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
    amzn.to/2kKYq9p
    OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
    amzn.to/2kIyVFN
Total upgrade cost: $623.52 (June 2015)

I love how Carey is like, "I build, upgrade and repair computers. Here's a bunch of videos that could put me out of business. I hope they give you the knowledge and confidence to not have to hire me."
Thank you. You make the world a better place.

As long as his channel is fine I don't think it'll will hurt him financially.

He doesn't really make money on the channel. He doesn't get enough views per video to make a significant amount of cash, and he doesn't use adds in his videos. He talked about that in one of his other video's he makes something like 1/4th of a half of a cent per view. Currently he has around 45000 views on this video which would come to 56.25 USD.

Hi Carey. Really enjoyed you doing a complete upgrade. Might try it myself with My main computer that I use. When funds are available. But you did a great job and you made it looks so simple. Which it is I have replaced all the parts that you have done in this video. Only used or refurbished. And then it was just to help somebody else out. For me it's a hobby as I explained in one of my comments already. I am handicapped but I still want to do something and I have learned so much from you. Really appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge. Thank you again my friend. Terry

Got a Lian Li pc-v1100 plus II nos late 2015. Manufacture date was 2007 but pretty cool even if it has a door that is very solid. No plastic at all.
It inspired my new Skylake build and since March 2016 time has been very cool and I love the case. Lian Li makes adapters so whatever you want from USB3.0 to ssd mounting or whatever Lian Li got you covered.
What used to be a floppy adapter became ssd adapter so pretty cool to still be able to use it and it does not completely become obsolete case hardware.
The 1100 case is wonderful to work with. Plenty of space and temps are low and noise is low as well.

I have an old Lian Li 20th Anniversary case in black. It has been a great case, and is still very sturdy and in good condition. It still goes for ~100 bucks used after 10 years.

They make a 4 to 8 pin adapter for the CPU power, so if wanted to & w/o a video card could have used the same PSU. Power supplies only take what they need...a 430w to 500w should be enough...very nice upgrade!

different inputs, im pretty sure you can't

You can use a 4 pin motherboard connector on most boards that have an 8 pin connector on the board. You have to check the motherboard manual to see if it supports it. If it does you ussually just have to align the cable with pin 1 of the slot, though it uses different shaped pins so you cannot fit it in at the wrong pins.

12:25 Spoiler alert: Microsoft did release Windows 10 before 2020.
Sorry if I ruined the ending for anyone.
