  • Just how hard is it to bunny-hop an e-bike compared to an analogue bike? With the current lockdown in place, we headed into the back garden to try and find out, pitting a Mondraker F-Podium against a Specialized Turbo Levo and Turbo Levo SL. First we did the challenge with flat pedals, and then we switched to clip-in pedals to see if they offered an advantage.

Seth (Seth's Bike Hacks) bunny-hopped a 60 pound mtb, 27 kilos, with tires filled with water. 🤷‍♂️
Your attention to detail comparing these bikes were so well done even included the flats vs clipless.

The flats versus clips results tells me there might be a maximum amount of weight you can lift with flat pedals. On an analogue bike this maximum weight is close to the weight of the bike, but when u start to look at the ebikes, the difference in flats versus clips is massive. I think this is because you cannot lift this much weight with flats. When you ride the ebikes with clips there is no difference between the heavy and the light ebike. When riding clips weight seems to matter less when you are looking for results. Interesting!

Excellent comparison! Especially, using the SL as a mid heavy contender. Counterintuitive was the clip less. I couldn't learn to hop with them...only after switching to flats last month could I achieve the proper timing. Interesting indeed!🤔 I guess I should keep them as I improve and maybe switch back once I've maxed my height out with flats💪Again Great stuff! 🍻

Surely this is highlighting a weakness in bunny hop technique as the clipped pedals are likely being used to help pull the bike up

so odd, I switched to clips on my normal bike. and was really happy with it. On my Ebike (cube stereo Hybrid 160) i didn't feel the need to go clipless. maybe the relative short chainstay helps more than the weight may hinder.

It´s all about adapting, I found that I can jump higher on my ebike than on my hardtails, I think it is because it is longer? no idea, but clearly it´s me, it´s just an anecdote. My ebike wheighs 24.5 kilos and I wheigh 67 XD so the rider wheight to bike wheight ratio is also an influence

    I have an e bike Lafly x3 1000w.
The motor is on the centre of the back wheel.
Is it possible to practice the bunny hop on my e mtb?

We’re not going to say it’s impossible, but it’s definitely going to be extremely difficult.
