I feel like NEVER might be a strong word. Splatoon is Nintendo's big new successful IP but they still released Splat 3 on the same system and with slight objective improvements making Splat 2 redundant, but still not really expanding on it in any great measure.
I feel like its a consistent enough trend to use it as a point in this video. Splatoon may be an example that disproves that statement, but it is 1 out 10 Nintendo franchises that actually does so. A reason for this might be because its the newest big Nintendo franchises, starting in 2015. Thus, it was made by New blood at the company, who may be more willing to make a simple iterative sequel (which there is nothing wrong with) rather then a straight up innovative shake up for every new game like Nintendo Veterans such as Miyamoto and Aonuma would do. Pokemon could also be a case against this, but I think that's also its own separate issue since the Pokemon franchises is jointly owned by 3 seperate entities: The Pokemon Company, Creatures Inc. and Nintendo. As a result, the Philosophy used to run that franchise is going to be different than something like Mario or Zelda which are wholly owned by Nintendo. So although I agree that the word "Never" might be inappropriate to describe that design philosophy, it generally holds up in most scenarios that you could make the argument for it to be used.
@@Ardrid_ Fair enough, I'm just saying it's not like Nintendo is immune to not-so-bombastic sequels, Splatoon was just the first example that came to mind. Mario Galaxy 2 is so similar to the original that playing one will make playing the other a much less enjoyable experience. Some would argue that the NSMB games are far too similar to each other.
@@Ardrid_ I am not trying to be that guy but the Pokémon IP is owned by Nintendo, Gamefreak and Creatures Inc. and those three companies formed the Pokémon company. So the Pokémon Company doesn't own pokémon it's just the company made to deal with everything related to the IP. Either way great video can't wait for the next one :)
I think Nintendo being over-protective of their brand an IP’s is understandable if you look at their history. They are basically the real world equivalent of a person with a gold mine under their house, that everyone wants to make a deal with just to have some of what they have.
I mean that is true. But said gold mine housing man is also lashing out against everyone including those who don’t care about the gold and just want to come over to hang out and watch some of their movies on the couch and instead greets that old buddy with a shot gun… that is to say their immense IP protection also makes their own reputation worse due to the hammer dropped on fan games and other passion projects using their IP
Makes a ton of sense, Zelda sells on name alone and by holding the best shit till 2 months out means they don't have to spend a year or more maintaining the hype machine. This was absolutly the best move. Remember when they announced a whole ass Metroid game like 3 or 4 months before it came out and everyone freaked out and didn't have to maintain interest for multiple years (Prime 4). Yea. Best move.
@@Ardrid_ Hahaha I kinda forgot that one cuz i waited 2 weeks to get the physical, but yea man, exactly. Just shadow drop the product and let the name and pedigree do the rest.
Absolutely a great analysis. I also have to note, as someone who occasionally plays puzzle games on his phone and watches TH-cam while I am taking a- oops, I mean anyway I have seen Nintendo pushing Google Adsense a lot more as well for marketing. Doing a bit of that alongside the unique mindshare that Nintendo has in the console gaming market is probably more than enough to keep the momentum of the Switch going. For the longest time, I had friends who aren't big gamers wondering "when's Breath of the Wild 2 coming out?" or "when's Mario Odyssey 2 coming out?" who _definitely_ don't follow any news... And said friends are hype over the former question.
The fun thing about mentioning F Zero while using F Zero GX is that it is technically a reiteration on its two previous entries, F Zero X (from theN64) and F Zero AX (from the cabinets made with Sega and Namco), and didn't innovate beyond giving it great graphics. Anyway, I still belive there is no new F Zero mainly because it doesn't sell as well, but I could mix both reasons, if they get a new idea they will implement it on Mario Kart instead.
Botw was so boring & disappointing for me that I've never even thought of playing tears of the kingdom. I'm a 2D zelda fan & Bloated games that require doing side quests, crafting, gathering stuff, solving worthless mini puzzles & feature lots of empty spaces aren't my thing. The last zelda that respected my time was link's awakening remake.
I always had a theory that Nintendo went all out on making Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey such incredible games is because to Nintendo, if the Switch failed like the Wii U, those two games would've been their swan song.
Believe it or not they still have cash from back when they saved the industry in the 80s and the success of the wii. They can tank probably 15 or more years of working at a loss.
Yeah, just going to show how far they're willing to go to protect the brand. They're gonna put that much extra effort into making innovative products considering that.
@@Ardrid_ Unless you're being sarcastic (which in case it is, it's quite funny ngl), there is absolutely zero correlation between them making a continuous chain of awful, unnecessary and absolutely greedy PR moves to "protect their brand" and making good games.
A pretty great video. It was nice to see a video that best explained Nintendo's philosophy when it comes to games without ignoring the mistakes and errors they made. I'm interested to see how ToTK will perform in the future.
nintendo is also a really conservative company where quality comes first and sell it as an hardware but stuck in the past with having no fair use as well dont accept new monetization concept like microtransaction or cosmetic and because there is no fair use its not even allowed to make mods or own games to sell it to nintendo self also competitive gaming in nintendo eyes is seen as a threat
Feels great that someone out there actually understands nintendo well enough to form their own critiques. Basically everyone tells you to 'stop being such a fanboy' when you bring them up, and its nice to see people being cognizant of nintendo's place in the industry as a whole. Great vid, like + sub
Was Scarlet and Violet and accidental terrible game? I know that the devs said they knew they needed more time to work on it but I'm not sure who gave the order to release it. It's a little understandable since the devs are literally told to make a new game every year but it still feels like it wasn't an accident.
