  • We discuss one of the biggest brassica planting mistakes…..sugar beets!
    They are two completely different plantings for different times of the year. Yet big name seed companies are combining the two in hopes of getting folks to buy them.

    Sales gimmick yes. Do the TV stars and TH-cam Stars know they are giving you bad information? Probably yes, maybe not. They don't care. They shoot big bucks because they have access to some of the best hunting ground in the country paid for by people who buy the gimmicks. Good to see there's a few people out there fighting the misinformation. Good video.

    We love our fall planted beats, but that's in our garden. They are started indoors and planted in beds when it cools off. I think they would get fried down here in the south in September.

    • @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
      @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jon,
    Will sugar beets withstand brows pressure through the summer if planted in the spring time. Or will the leaves be gone by fall. I know this is all relevant to deer number and location. Just thought I’d see if you had any suggestions and if it’s worth the time to plant them. Thanks again and keep the great informational videos coming.

    • @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
      @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663  ปีที่แล้ว

      They won’t take much summer browse pressure similar to beans or early brows in on brassica.

    Question..... what are your recommendations for application of fertilizers and urea for best brassica results? Great videos!

    • @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
      @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question
      With out seeing a. Soil test
      200 pounds.
      6-24-24 and 100 pounds urea
      Possibly some AMS
      It’s kind of guessing with out test results to go off of.
      But brassica are massive users of inputs,like corn.
      Too little fertilizer and you can get yellow leaves by late October.
      Many foliar/ liquids can work great as well.
      We like Plot Dr. from Harper growing solutions.

    I hunt in southeast Texas. I'm going to try the short season brassica this year. Radishes are the one brassica I see deer eating the most. I have a lot of questions on screening blends. When do I plant in the deep south is one of them.

  • @fishaholicfishingteam1108
    @fishaholicfishingteam1108 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks John! Quick question. Would you or could you use wheat and or rye as a spring/ summer cover/ green manure crop as we do buckwheat. Deer in our area destroy the buckwheat alot of years before it reaches any size. Once the woods turn green they seem to leave the rye alone. Will be planting sweat feast and clover in fall

      We tried corn with clover Combo and it didn’t do to well. We are going to do a corn over seed video soon.
      But rye and radishes are a great addition to corn.

    Brassica question
    My brassica plantings in Northern MN big woods area get decimated by deer. My brassica plantings in Central MN surrounded by heavy agriculture get largely overlooked by deer . I have heard from a couple other folks brassicas in heavy ag area s are not as attractive to deer . Anyone know why or seen the same thing?

    • @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
      @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would add 100 pounds per acre of winter peas to the central ag brassica.
      For the big woods plot you may look at clovers and cereal grains instead

    • @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663

      Sugar beets in brassica are a waste of time as they grow so slow and can be choked out quickly.

    I want to try sugar beets. Could I broadcast and light disc in early June? Will I need to fence the area? Do you think I will need to fertilize. This is in a muck area with high organic matter.

    • @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
      @northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get a real good weed kill.
      Broadcast and a light disc will get the seed deep enough.
      Yes
      19-19-19 and 46-0-0 (similar to corn) for fertilizer
      A electric fence may be needed pending the local deer density

    • @jasonmeyer4587

      Planted sugarbeets in mid June in Central MN last year. Good germination but late planting date and fairly heavy browse prevented the beet from getting very big. Trying again this year with a May beet planting.

    Aren’t there some brassica plants and turnips that are 100 days or more to maturity? I get that most brassica are less than 80 days, but you could feasibly plant the longer maturity brassica with sugar beets in the spring.

      Yes some kale varieties and Swedes as well.

    • @josephtreadlightly5686
      @josephtreadlightly5686 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kale is great for me for introducing diversity in an area where u have a large rape along with forage radishes. I've had many kale plants becoming the largest producers in forage over the last 3 years of drought here in MN on sandy soil. Putting too many turnip seeds in there is a mistake & will only take away from your radish & kale production which I've found for year to year August plantings. Kinda like having Sugar Beets in there mixed with some dwarf essex rape, that is just plain non-logical. Will a kill-plot tucked away in the woods with security have any drawing power when large areas of agriculture with sugar beets are in the general area? Just ridiculous & irresponsible. 😢
