    Do you mow paths through your switchgrass to connect wooded travel corridors to your food plots; and if yes, do bucks typically use those mowed paths or do they walk parallel to that mowed path but downwind.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Virgil I would recommend that in large switchgrass areas but in small screenings they create their own trails for sure. Make sure they aren't straight as an arrow. They seem to use them more often than not! They should end at a woodline with a treestand, maybe a waterhole but definitely a mock scrape and treestand.

Unfortunately the rain the day of and day after planting didn’t happen. It went south more. I am praying for rain in the near forecast which currently does not look good. 🤞

    I'm in SE Michigan and I always shoot for August 1st for brassicas, which may seem a little early, but if Mother Nature throws a drought curveball it gives me time for a do-over in late August. Brassicas will grow in about any soil, but if they germinate and then go 7-10 days with no precipitation, my experience shows a 100% chance of failure or at best serious stunting. So I always plan for having time for two seedings if necessary. Also, brassica seeds are tiny, so if you are disking and tilling and you get a deluge of rain prior to germination, the seed can work its way too deep into the soil...so I always shoot for planting prior to those days when the radar shows green, not yellow and red. I learned that lesson one year too. I've found that's one bonus of the no till method because the thatch protects the seed from a driving rain. Moral of the story is that the windows for brassicas is pretty wide, so I shoot for early in the window knowing that there will time for a re-do if weather doesn't cooperate. Thanks and great video.

    Hello Jeff! I have a couple questions. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. When would you plant your buckwheat in this kind of climate for a fall plot of sugar beets, radish and turnips? Or would sugar beets even work with buckwheat smashed over it? Also the best I got for a roller is about a 300 pounder. Really look forward to hearing from you!
    p.s I also have bunch of kale I'm going to put in a small patch just to see what the deer do with it

    Jeff. Love your videos and I have prob watched all of them. I do have to questions. You talk about it but not specifically like I’m going to ask.
    1) you talk about not putting rye into brassicas due to competition. Is it ok however to layer it in like you do after brassicas are grown say I plant brassica aug 1st and want to layer rye in middle of sept?
    2) planted my plots end of July with good rain in forecast. Got the rain for a couple days with great germination a week later. But now we are looking at no rain in the 10 day forecast. My question is how long after you plant and don’t get rain do you need to get worried. NY planting and I did the buckwheat no till method.
    Thanks and keep the content rolling

    Thank you for all the great info on plots. I have an acre of brassicas that’s been in for a month (SE SD, very dry). Got lucky with the only rain in July, so it’s growing but very spotty. Is it ok to then follow up with Rye in early September or should I broadcast peas or oats? Can’t drill only roll.
    Thanks for any insight you might be able to share.

      Hi SD you are very welcome! Right now is actually the perfect time for planting brassica in SD. If it looks light I would add some brassica seed to the planting if you have rain in the next week. Otherwise, definitely add heavy rye early to mid Sept.

    We have farmers growing soybeans currently on our farm. We have designated several areas of the crop and over seeded the soybeans with brassicas on one side and winter rye on the other. I’m hoping that the leaves on the beans turn yellow and allow enough growing time for our brassicas. Have you ever planted over ag like that before? I’m sure the rye will be fine but I’m just hoping the brassicas get enough growth before the cold temps hit. I’m in southern Indiana.

    Jeff, I disked my buckwheat the last week and noticed there were some plants were starting to go to seed. I broadcasted my brassicas the same day and cultipacked. After a week i noticed that my buckwheat germinating as well as the brassicas. Will the buckwheat out compete the brassicas? Will i need to start over?

    I agree with all of this, however there is one thing that I would like to throw out there. I have a beautiful spot in a creek bottom. About 1/3 acre food plot with a GIANT healthy white oak in the center of it. The place doesn't get as much light as a result of it and the surrounding trees. Because of this I plant two weeks earlier than my other larger plots and has always turned out great for me.

    Jeff I just picked up a 50 acre plot that has a creek on one side and a major highway on the other. I can barely hear the highway traffic on the opposite end of the property along the creek. My question is do you think mature bucks would bed on the property if they can hear the highway noise?

    So I have a question, I recently gained permission to hunt 32 acres here in Ky that is woods with a couple 5-6 acre fields that haven’t been brush hogged in a couple years so it’s really got a ton of young trees, looks like great bedding, I just hung a stand on the edge of the first one of these with quiet access, but I was thinking of placing a corn pile on the edge, is this a bad idea since it’s so close to their bedding, is that too intrusive? Any reply’s are muchly appreciated
