    When they're in the cemetery and Zoolander asks "Why male models?" twice, Ben Stiller had forgotten his line and so improvised by repeating his previous line. I react much the same way you both do every time I see that scene - it's hilarious!

      I love how Duchovny responds in-character, whatever the next line would have been it couldn't have been funnier than his deadpan delivery of incredulity

    • @jlinkous05
      @jlinkous05 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +75

      It's an acting tool. It takes a ton of time to stop and restart shooting and blocking. Stiller forgot his line and began again at the start, which is the signal for the other actors to repeat the lines, and they'll edit it in post. But David improved about already telling him, and they kept it.

      @@jlinkous05 I hadn't realised it was an acting tool. Thanks for letting me know, Duchovny's improvised line is definitely even funnier now that I know the background to Ben Stiller's repeating the line.

    18:00 - Fun fact, when Stiller repeated, "But why male models?" of Duchovny's character the second time, that wasn't scripted. Stiller had forgotten his next line and just repeated his last one, hoping that if Duchovny repeated his response again, by the end of the second loop Ben might have remembered what was next and saved them all from having to break and reset for the scene, but Duchovny's off the cuff puzzled reply about having just told Ben why, actually fitted the comedy of the scene so well, it was kept as part of the film.

    Like Tropic Thunder, this movie effortlessly pulls off a blackface joke, without being derogatory or mean-spirited. When I saw this on release in the cinema, everybody puckered in anticipation of how bad it could be when Derek brings out the makeup, then the release of tension was great, genuine belly laughs watching the other actors lip-synch so well. It's also surprisingly gentle - even Derek's 'eew' at Matilda's previous weight is only because he's too stupid to realise that you aren't supposed to be mean to others just because they are different. It's a comedy you can show to a wide audience and they all find a different part funny - that's real writing skill.

    I didn't know what to expect from this, but it was great! Lots of things I loved, but one thing isn't a gag: it's not lit and shot as flat as most comedies are. All the crazy stuff is so much more funny because the visual style has real world vibes. Great set and costume design, too.

    This is a family film….meaning all of the Stiller’s were in the film……Stiller decided to take out the Twin Towers in the background shots…said it was in bad taste when it premiered on 9/28/2001…..just 17 days after the 9/11 attacks….but was restored on the Blue Ray version in 2016…

      That track was a super hit in the mid-80’s and also sparked this dumb fashion trend where people wore T-shirts with the word "relax"written across the chest. (Anyone played GTA Vice City?)
      The song and accompanying fashion fad was in it self a kind of satiric comment on the stupification of popular culture.
      There are several meta-layers to this joke.

    The coal miners family seems random for sure but there is this movie called Billy Elliot which is coming of age movie about a kid that likes ballet and start dancing at a young age in the UK, it is located in a fake place but it is supposed to be Liverpool more specifically, his family is a family of coal miners. It is kinda a trope of the UK that the liberal, artsy character had blue collar working family because it was true in the UK in the 70's and 80's. They are playing to that trope in the movie.

In my language they still call the vault a 'horse-jump'(paard-sprong)and the pommel horse is called "horse-turner"(paard-voltige..voltigebeing a French word. Probably because the FIG's official language is French😅). Dutch is a weird language

    I'd highly recommend Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" Marginally based on the Danny Kaye original of the same name it is....a quirky, romantic adventure..I guess...very funny, inventive and with plenty of pathos too...crazy at times but overall not ridiculous, and honestly surprisingly wholesome without overdoing it. .
