I think people underappreciate the fantastic duo work Gary Cole does with Bateman in this film. His dry, dumbfounded reactions to Pepper, and his 100% serious take on ESPN 8, The Ocho, and the absurdity of shows it puts on. Just, fantastic.

there are some great behind the scenes stories for this movie, Justin long has done a few interviews where he talks about some of the stuff they went through, Also Kate was played by Ben Stillers wife which makes all their scenes even more hilarious I agree with the other mentions but you need to watch Galaxy Quest and Tropic Thunder

RIP Rip Torn. I love this movie. I'm so glad you both enjoyed it. It's so funny and great! Jason's role in this is small, but so impactful! His comedic timing is so spot on. He and Gary Cole just worked so well together I think. If they would be sports anchors as these characters for other sports, I would watch more sports.
I remember years ago one of those "worst villains in cinema" lists on IMDB and the top of the list was White Goodman and I genuinely thought whoever compiled this list had no idea how comedy works
I think he's an underated villain. Obviously his character is absurd but his commitment to the role the dialogue and how low and spiteful the character is, I think he deserve recognition as being a really well acted villain.

Jason Bateman's character was basically created by him. They originally wrote his character to be really unreasonably straight laced, the joke was the wooden platitudes he spoke. When Bateman read the script he imagined the part to be played by a stoner xgames type skater dude. So he showed up dressed like that and read the dull straight-laced lines like that wasted stoner, and it cracked up everyone so hard the co-start announcer who read with him kept breaking character laughing his ass off. Ben stiller saw it and loved it, they changed a few lines but otherwise kept his dialogue mostly identical to how it was originally written and just let him roll with it. The 'interesting strategy cotton, let's see how that plays out for them' is easily one of the most quoted lines from this movie.
Every word Jason Bateman uttered will echo in eternity ("Effin' A, Cotton, Effin' A!" "Usually you pay double for that kind of action, Cotton." "Good toss by the submissive out there!" We play dodgeball in Sweden too, but the key is a good gym teacher that is fair and make sure the teams are even and whatnot. Just like in any sport in gym class (be it Soccer or whatever).

Rip Torn was a great actor unfortunately he was ornery, and a bit of a lush. This cost him a lot of work not that it mattered to him. When he showed up and was a happy the performances shined. He's shinning here.
The dodgeball games here in Canada were elaborate. There were two teams (of course), but on each team there was a guy who could revive. Everybody chose the smallest guy on their team because once they died, it was basically over. We abused their powers of reviving by having the biggest guy (usually me, I was 6 foot tall and 250 pds in grade 6) stand in front of them and be the shield and they would place their hand on you thus making you invulnerable. It was interesting having to maneuver around the battlefield while protecting the healer. Do we revive the best athlete on our team? He died next to the front lines it will be easier to flank the healer but we can't let it go down to just the healer and guard or they will have a lucky shot. It's a gamble.. If I let one slip by and nail the healer, we were done for without a miracle. I loved it. In hindsight, it made the game better for everyone. Kids of all sizes were valued for different reasons. Nobody was "picked last", in this way.
There are plenty of variations of dodgeball lol One of my favourites is one with benches at the back of each side. Hit players go to the opposite bench and must themselves catch a ball to return to play
Jason Bateman is one of the greatest actors of our time. People that like him no this but I think most overlook him. He even started out as a child actor and never actually had a downtime in his career.

This movie is such a hidden gem :) I've also been waiting on someone to comment on Stephen Root. That man has such an impressive resume and no one seems to notice.
The commentary track on this DVD is CRAZY! Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn come in and basically tell the director that his idea sucked and that the movie was only successful because of them. The director walks out of the commentary and the rest of the time is just Stiller and Vaughn talking shit and praising themselves. Vaughn is drinking beer the whole time and at one point threatens the engineer who is fucking with their headphones. Stiller and Vaughn come off as pompous dickheads.
Jason Bateman is the cherry on top of that sundae of a movie.
Pairing him up with Lumberg was perfect.
Jason did his scene in between filming Arrested Development. They were filming on the same lot.

Love this movie! Ben Stiller plays almost exactly the same antagonist in the movie Heavyweights from 1995 (8 years earlier).
A Fan theory is that they are the same person. Tony changed his name after his mental breakdown in Heavyweights and decided to open a gym. Their evidence is that Tony and White have the same backstop about being fat when they were young.
Justin Long just made his directorial debut with a movie called "Lady of the Manor". It's actually pretty funny.
I actually enjoyed playing dodgeball in middle school. It was really satisfying getting a good, hard, hit on someone you didn't like.

The skinny guy on the German team was actually a "professional" from the old show Extreme Dodgeball back around 2004.
Rip Torn was a great actor unfortunately he was ornery, and a bit of a lush. This cost him a lot of work not that it mattered to him. When he showed up and was a happy the performances shined. He's shinning here.
The dodgeball games here in Canada were elaborate. There were two teams (of course), but on each team there was a guy who could revive. Everybody chose the smallest guy on their team because once they died, it was basically over. We abused their powers of reviving by having the biggest guy (usually me, I was 6 foot tall and 250 pds in grade 6) stand in front of them and be the shield and they would place their hand on you thus making you invulnerable. It was interesting having to maneuver around the battlefield while protecting the healer. Do we revive the best athlete on our team? He died next to the front lines it will be easier to flank the healer but we can't let it go down to just the healer and guard or they will have a lucky shot. It's a gamble.. If I let one slip by and nail the healer, we were done for without a miracle.
I loved it. In hindsight, it made the game better for everyone. Kids of all sizes were valued for different reasons. Nobody was "picked last", in this way.
There are plenty of variations of dodgeball lol
One of my favourites is one with benches at the back of each side. Hit players go to the opposite bench and must themselves catch a ball to return to play

Jason Bateman is one of the greatest actors of our time. People that like him no this but I think most overlook him. He even started out as a child actor and never actually had a downtime in his career.

In boy scouts we had "Slaughter pin ball", basically dodgeball except your job was to protect a bowling pin. So, instead of dodging you took the hit.

The commentary track on this DVD is CRAZY! Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn come in and basically tell the director that his idea sucked and that the movie was only successful because of them. The director walks out of the commentary and the rest of the time is just Stiller and Vaughn talking shit and praising themselves. Vaughn is drinking beer the whole time and at one point threatens the engineer who is fucking with their headphones. Stiller and Vaughn come off as pompous dickheads.
