    "Do Not Hump".........that really takes the fun out of thing.

    • @ekimp252

      I wonder what the deal is with that.

    • @CatCube2
      @CatCube2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@ekimp252 Some rail yards sort cars by pushing them to the top of a "hump" and letting them roll down by gravity, where they are switched onto their destination tracks as they roll down. If there's no hump, they'll sometimes push the cars with a locomotive and cut them loose at the end of the push, letting them roll into their destination; this process is called "kicking". Finally, they can flat switch the cars where they are under the control of a locomotive at all times while being shoved into their destination track. Hump sorting or kicking cause a lot more shock to the loads than flat switching, so you'll see cars carrying loads that could be damaged by this shock marked "Do not hump" or "Do not hump or kick."

    • @ekimp252
      @ekimp252 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@CatCube2 I understand all of that, I was referring more to the particular car. CSXT, right behind the locomotive, I wonder if it's some kind of brake booster or control car.

    13:37 I grew up about a mile from here. My dad and I would come here to watch when we heard the steam engines that NS would bring into town once a year. We rode one year, I was probably 7 or 8 (so sometime around 1988). The last time I went through the boxes in the attic I still had the stamped tickets. Also, specific to that store there use to be a large woodpecker sign on top. The trains would stop and get a coke on their way out.

    Something just like you getting stuck at Edgewood happened to me in Jax, too! I was shooting photos of a GP59 in NS' Simpson Yard last year when an NS manifest pulled out across Old Kings Road and separated me from my parents and their car! I was stuck for about a half-hour as the train switched until it finally cleared. Fun times...

  • @railfanmicahturner
    @railfanmicahturner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Watching this almost 3 years later because of the thumbnail, we just had CSX 5101 on the Eastman power for E090 here in Eastern Kentucky, Harlan county and the Loyall railyard on the Cumberland Valley Subdivision. Eastman Chemical is a massive company complex in Kingsport, Tennessee and in order to power the site, they buy CV coal as a direct connection. Usually one 90 car train a week, but they take the loads back in 2 halves of 45 due to the grade and bypassing a requirement for a pusher set or DPU, though both have been used in the past. Usually in a trifecta, the Eastman train will load at the Balkan loadout alongside the CV main, then the ancient NRG loader along the Poorfork Branch out of Loyall, followed by the Creech loadout on the Merna spur, also along the CV main. The CV doesn’t see a lot of traffic, but in the average week usually 2-6 trains, one of which is the Eastman train and another an R615 for Creech, with the other 4 varied between the other loadouts. One specific loadout however, Lynch 3 at the current terminus for the Poorfork Branch, is set to reopen this month and serve 2 trains monthly, so maybe that can get some more trains on the board. Nonetheless, seeing 5101 made me smile and point out “Hey, there’s the recent Eastman Power!” Great video Danny.

    Thanks, Danny. Here on the Union Pacific, Pacific Coast Line, Santa Barbara Sub, MP 405, only 1 freight per day, the local, 6 Metrolink commuters (3 south, 3 northbound) and a dozen or so Amtraks. There's a once-a-week Oilcan loaded southbound to the refinery, and the next day empties northbound to the well heads. Most of the traffic has shifted east through the San Joaquin route, or passes through here at night. Jon

    Great video and catches! Always fun when the train you're trying to film stops for a good long while on the crossing you're at. Had that happen once on the CSX in Decatur, luckily for me, the crossing I was at wasn't on a dead-end street so I could've left had I wanted to. Nice to hear the WCH mechanical bell at Edgewood Drive as well.

    That mechanical bell looked and sounded like a WCH model. CP here in Central Minnesota is known to upgrade flashers to LEDs and leave the old Safetran mech bells, as well. It definitely keeps things interesting. Meanwhile on BNSF, the real treat is finding an early GS e-bell, since they've all but removed all their mech bells

    I lived in a WATCO serviced town. It was the South Kansas and Oklahoma Line (SKOL) headquartered in Cherryvale Kansas. WATCO corporate headquarters is located in Pittsburg Kansas on West 3rd and North Walnut Streets. It is near the KCS Heavener and Pittsburg Subdivisions. West of Pittsburg Kansas lies the BNSF Afton Subdivision. This sub runs from the BNSF Cherokee Sub near the town of Afton Oklahoma to just south of Fort Scott Kansas where it becomes the BNSF Fort Scott Sub running into Kansas City Kansas/Missouri.

    I get stoped at the birdville store all the time,sometimes for 30 minutes. I drive a big truck, I just turn it off and enjoy the train.

    Over two years ago, as an IHG telephone reservation agent, I was making reservations for this event that year, and I asked a guy on the phone if he knew Danny Harmon. "Of course," said he. "Everybody knows Danny!" Well, I had hoped to be in Jacksonville for this event, but I forgot about it and I didn't have the money anyway. Oh well, maybe next year. LUV your videos, Mr. Harmon.

    Old Edgewood closed at the top of Simpson Yard? Wonder when they did that.
    Before the Edgewood overpass was built in the early Seventies, that was a tedious crossing. You'd be caught by trains in and out of Moncrief, then just west of there by trains in and out of Simpson.
    I guess the NS followed CSX's example when they closed (without city permission) Old Kings Road at the top of Moncrief. Before that, you had to deal with not just trains in and out, but yard jobs drilling back and forth. And further west, the NS.
