    That timing at 9:43 when you step out of the shot and turn the camera towards the tracks just as Q455 rounds the curve never ceases to amaze me. Keep up the good work, Danny! I've been a fan of yours ever since the early days of TH-cam and your adventures in Florida railfanning have always been a treat to watch.

      I have to agree that was a cool shot and angel. It was so natural. I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot about railroad Danny H. I have loved trains since I was very young. Here in south Central Kentucky CSX is the main railroad. Go west of here about 65 miles in Paducah you have UP, ICG, the P& L, CN, a big freight yard. That make some interesting railfanning. The Amtrak run in Fulton, Ky. City of New Orlean twice daily.

    Really don't know what is is that I find so fascinating about your videos since I'm not really into trains. I think it's the professional feel to the filming and voiceover and the fact that there's so much information contained within them.
    Keep up the great work.

    DH, the horn on CSX 559 ( the one with the crazy horn) is a Leslie RS3K. 3 chime horn, working 100% properly!

    • @distantsignal
      @distantsignal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It may be working properly, but you've got to admit it's highly unusual on a CSX engine.

    That lead unit on T471, CSX 559, has a Leslie RS3K. Burlington Northern was the biggest user of these horns and it's unknown how one ended up on 559.

    • @distantsignal
      @distantsignal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I figured it was some kinda Leslie. Had long chimes.

    • @NortheasternRailPhotography
      @NortheasternRailPhotography 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was most likely a HLCX SD40's horn taken off and replaced with a K5LA and the reverse happened to 559.

    That AC440CW on T471 didn't have a fouled horn, but a Leslie RS3K type horn. UP and BNSF were the only railroads that I know of that bought them. So its very rare seeing and hearing one on a CSX engine!

    • @Tcaauwe2002
      @Tcaauwe2002 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      actually.. that horn.. is a forner BN S3K. likely off on old HLCX leaser SD40-2. it sounds perfect!

    • @8989theman
      @8989theman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Your actually wrong on both comments. 1) The difference between S3K and RS3K aren't judged by bells or sounds. Sounds, kind of... but bells, no. The difference are the tab back chambers. 2) It was a RS3K on the engine. It was hard to find a good angle of it, but I saw a spiked tab back chamber, thus being a RS3K. So to make it easier to understand: Regular S Style Tab Back Chambers have the S on it, RS Style Spiked Tab Back Chambers add the R and S.

    • @AbelG8781
      @AbelG8781 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      CentralOhioTrains lol incorrect! UP nor BNSF purchased RS3K's. Only BN did.

      @8989theman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @AbelG8781 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** well you said UP and BNSF bought RS3Ks so I was a bit confused since I've never heard them on either but you're correct, BNSF recycled and salvaged lots of Leslie horns unlike UP :(

    Danny: While the Chinese Flu is affecting everyone in some way, it can get pretty dull being at home 24/7. I'm one of the folks at high risk to catch it, so staying at home is my favorite thing to do. Besides keeping the house clean and running, planning the next food delivery (From Publix), there isn't much to do. But being able to retreat to the computer room and watch your great videos make life one hell of a lot easier. I've been to many of the locations where you travel, seen them and remember them, I can spend 5-6 hours reminiscing of years past on the road. Keep up the great work! Be Careful, Stay Safe, Eat Well To Stay Healthy and .... DON'T BREATHE!

  • @TrainTrackTrav
    @TrainTrackTrav 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The horn on T471 is actually a rare RS3K. These horns were designed to sound a D sharp minor chord to comply with Canadian horn laws. Strangely, the RS3Ks were most well know for their use on the Burlington Northern. From what I know, CSX 559 is the only unit on the entire CSX roster to carry this particular type of horn. Sounds like this particular RS3K has a very pronounced 48 bell (the highest note of the three). It's not the very best RS3K I have ever heard, but it is pretty close. Awesome catch, and great video, Danny! Thank you for sharing.

    Sweet catch to visit the private car yard in Orange Park Danny. Back in the 90'S those & others would come together once a year to be assemble into a special train for the annual convention of A.A.P.R.C.O. & they've been to many great places. In fact of those conventions happened in Florida when the association held the gathering in your home town of Tampa in 1999. The GEORIGA 300 was used most of the time to negotiate business & discuss plans on where the next annual convention should be held & car owners would then spend the next few months planning ahead & making many new improvements to their cars keeping them up to date with wheel conditions, air breaks, the interior decorations & modern devices to make the rides better each time out.

    Hi Danny, great video as usual!! Gainesville native here. A965 was most likely destined for the Conrad Yelvington rock plant in Gainesville. There is a wye in Alachua where they sometimes leave cars, then continue east to Gainesville for the rocks. Hoppers will most likely be split off at some point, then continue to their destination further west down the line. This is only to my knowledge from what I've observed over the years, could be wrong.

    Great video, Danny. I am seeing this for the 1st time, lol. Where you were filming at Orange Park is at Kingsley Road. The rail yard there has been empty for months now, which is an indicator of how well our economy is doing since all those private cars are busy! The A line from there southward is very picturesque, with lots of nice curves to shoot from. Surprisingly, I don't see rail fans here, which is a shame. . I live in Green cove springs about three miles from the A line. I'm glad you made it up our way!

    Great video - I grew up in Orange Park (OP)! There used to be a second Georgia car. But it was destroyed in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew hit the building it was kept in (down in South Florida). The yard isn't really open to the public. However, if you happen to come across one of the car owners, they're almost always polite and love to talk about their car. One told me that I could rent one for a month for $10,000 or so... in my dreams.

As a kid they once stopped a passenger train in Orange Park to let my 4th grade class on for a ride to Green Cove. There was a small freight terminal at that Orange Park curve, on the east side of the track. It's been gone for half a century.

    7:54 I just recently learned that myself. I forget the reason, but I was actually looking up modern diesel electric locomotive bells and found a video of a guy who had one in his personal collection and hooked it up to an air compressor. I'd be curious to see one of them disassembled to learn what mechanism is in place to time the bell. I'm guessing some type of valve that trips at a certain pressure and releases the trapped air for a second or so before the pressure trips it again - but that's just a guess.

    You could travel to the UK and film freight trains over here. Only that you would find the track is often fenced up or brick up making difficult to get a good shot depending on the locations. Most freight trains also run during night time as the railroad is so busy during the day with other types of trains.

    I remember the turn table at Wildwood. Now gone but still has some marks on the ground.

    There is a siding down the line from Orange park from the side that the coal train came from. I assume the was a meet.

    By the way, when I was a kid (30 years ago), there would be a train every 30 minutes on week days. Too bad traffic on the A-line is much less than back in the day. I really enjoyed this video!

    I know it’s been three years since this video was made-and between one and two since all the old signals were replaced by the new cantilevers and such-but what did CSX do with the old signals once removed? Junk them, save some as replacements in other areas, donate a few to museums?
    And, would there have been an opportunity for you to buy one of the signals (what might it have cost) for your yard collection?
