    I'm not much of a guitarist, but I've been an enthusiastic 12-string player since the 60s. I've learnt something new and interesting today, for the first time in a long time. Thank you.

    I had the thought of tuning a 12-string to E2/E3, A2/A3, D3/D4, G3/C3, B3/Gb3, E4/C4. If it were a 14-string, you could have B1/B2 as the 7th course. You could have G4 as the 2nd string of the 3rd course if your guitar's scale length is short enough, you don't mind a quieter acoustic with looser strings, or if you play an electric; but, with this tuning you have a C3 and a C4 string, which are an octave apart.

    Always wanted to try a 2nds or 3rds tuning on my 12 string but never put forth the effort to try it.

    Its a nice idea...tried it once myself. Good for soloing. I'm more interested in some of Leo Kottke's open tunings like Open C (John Butler uses it for Ocean).

    By any chance would you know if is it feasible to wide string spacing a little on each pair so someone could be able to switch between playing each pair together and each string alone? Guess that could make it easier trying even more alternate tunings. I'd also enjoy the possibility of playing minor seconds by basically using like finger 1 at first fret, and finger 2 at the second one, for example.

      I often use this tuning you describe...it is a mystical, otherworldly yet beautiful sound that turns even simple triads into lush chords with upper extensions. it is not for everything but it is beautiful

      on mandolin these are called cross tunings. the most famous example is the "get up john" tuning, AF#-DD-AA-AD, as played by bill monroe.

  • @Bhatt_Hole

    Are there any non-octave 12-string tunings... which actually sound good??

    • @Muzikman127
      @Muzikman127 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. I could give you a long theoretical answer as to why, but the short answer is "no"; they will always be at best a novelty

    • @calinguga
      @calinguga 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Muzikman127 long theoretical answer: dissonance. but i very much disagree that makes the tunings sound "bad". chord colors are a great thing, you know?
      similar to the first idea he presented, it's probably most useful to tune some doubles to descending fourths or ascending fifths relative to standard (preferably on the higher courses though), so when you use those for the thirds and fifths of the chords you'll get free sevenths and ninths. you also get rich "single" notes in the high register (and richness is the whole point of 12 string guitar).
      as mentioned in the video this is a legitimate use of a pitch shifter, but being able to choose which strings are affected is a definite plus. i wouldn't call it "at best a novelty", it's a proper extended technique (with some use in both 12 string guitar and mandolin music).
