I just love Datsuns, grew up learning to drive stick in a 69 510 coupe and station wagon. Drove a 73’ 710 coupe to school. Made some modifications in 1980 to my 710. Shaved the keyhole on trunk and installed cable pull left of driver seat, shaved gas tank fill , relocated into trunk. Installed 2” 4 point roll cage, with 1” clearance to roof and windows. I just love that you saved this car from the grave. Glad I was able to find your post, gotta catch up on episodes. Good luck, stay safe, and Alohaz from Hawaii! 🤙🏾

Here's a tip from an old guy in North Dakota. The absolute worst thing you can do to an engine that hasn't run in a long time is spray start it. Use a 40:1 or 50:1 mix 2 stroke fuel so you have a little lubrication for those dry cylinders.

Had a 81zx trans and a 84zx rear diff. Z's are so inbred... Lots of stuff transfers between them with minimal effort if any.

As promised I’ve had a look at your video. Your Z certainly isn’t like a California car but nevertheless is a million miles better than one would generally be over here in the UK even 30 years ago plus. You definitely couldn’t buy one here for the equivalent of $300. They only brought around 1500 RHD 240Z here in the first place and I probably pulled 50 of those to bits in the 80s when we specialised in them. The survivors are few and far between and make big bucks now. It looks like you’ve got a well equipped work shop there and some skills so I’ve subscribed to see how that thing progresses👍 By the way do you know Michael from Budgetbuildz? He’s in the Carolinas and likes to fix up stuff from junk yards and that has been sitting out in the woods for years.

If this were my project I would go V8. A Honda minivan will smoke a 240 or 280. I have had 10 z cars and trying to get more hp from these engines is not easy. Do not even think of triple webers. The other issue you might have is the lack of power steering. By the time you put on tires big enough to make the car hang with Civics, parking will require A LOT of effort. Consider a power steering system. They are beautiful cars, just keep your expectations low when it comes to performance unless you do an engine swap and put on big tires. In stockish form they were good for 1972, by the 80's they were not competitive unless modified.
Thanks for the comment David!! We have definitely considered a motor swap. We trying to do like a OEM + build and keep mostly original. Ive done a few ls swaps to cars Ive owned so thats a strong option for a plan B if the motor out of the 280z doesnt pan out. Also a 1j or 2j or rb motor isnt out of the realm of possibilities either!! Thanks for stopping by bro!!!
