Worn Out Sloppy Hood Hinges Restoration - Datsun 240Z

- In this video I'm restoring the hood hinges of my 1973 Datsun 240Z. When I did the panel alignement on the hood of the car, I had to realize that both hinges were worn out. The had enormous play when the hood was closed. The movement in the hinges was around 2cm (3/4 inch) up and down. Installing the torsion bars did eliminate the loose play, but they just pushed all the play upwards, means I could still push the hood down the 2cm. This was especially an issue, because I could not even lower the hood enough to align it with the head light buckets and fenders. The hood was just sitting too high. There was only one solution, to restore the hinges.
After disassembly, I first sandblasted all the parts. Then I straigthend all the segments, drilled all holes 1mm bigger and reamed them for a nice and accurate hole. I've also filed all the contours clean to remove the nasty fabrication marks from the punching. After that I chamfered everything and removed all the sharp edges. Then it was time to make 14 new little shafts for the joints. I was sure to measure all the thickness of the parts and diameters to make the new parts fit as tight as possible, yet still having enough play to move. For proper rust protection and also keep the originality to the parts I gave them all for yellow zinc plating to a local company. For the reassembly I didn't apply any grease, because I also plan to paint the hinges in car color like it was originally. Having grease in the joints could mess the paint job up. I'll be sure to lubricate them all after painting. To deform the ends of the little shafts I quickly made a little tool for the hydraulic press. It worked like a charm on the 6t press. The ends of the shafts got now a nice chamfer after pressing and the head got 1mm bigger in diameter. I've also made some test pieces before and cut them in half after pressing and the result was very nice. A very tight and strong hold, a nice rivet connection.
I hope you like my work and enjoy the video.

A classic 240Z rebuilt from the ground up to Swiss standards of machining precision? This is going to be great!
This series is going to be "If Rolex Made Cars". 😆
@@kjh23gk I think it's going to be concourse quality, but it's going to take a long time!
Thank you very much, I really do appreciate it :-)
@@mymechanicsinsights More like if Jaeger le Coultre built a 240Z, Rolex can sometimes be a bit iffy.
@@PetermusPrime we have patience, we watched project binky.
No car has ever been built with that level of precision before. It's going to be a one of a kind vehicle!
Fingers crossed...
@@mymechanicsinsights You got this don't worry.
You will enjoy Project Binky if you love fastidiousness.
@@LilMissMurder3409I just looked up Project Binky and all I can say is 🤯.
How did I not know about this?!
Thanks for the lead. I have some binge watching to do!
drilled out some worn holes... this isnt rocket surgery
This guy is not messing around. He's gonna make the best 1973 Datsun 240Z in the universe.
A Datsun with .01 tolerances is wild
The question is „Why?“.
😊😊😊😊😊@@5764rich
@Occupy_pedophilia88Because driving this on the autobahn and someone crashes into you will be not fun
The quality you put into every project is incredible. Nice job!
Thanks a ton!
dude its insane the level of detail he goes to!
I love how you can make the restoration of the most basic items so interesting. Just amazing.
Thank you kindly!
This is exactly the kind of restoration I was waiting for when you announced restoring the car. Pure mechanical joy.
The methodical precision in each stage of addressing the problem is really what gets me - the deconstruction of each issue and the subsequent steps to rectify it are so fascinating and so, so satisfying... and seeing the hydraulic press to so cleanly peen the pivot bolt ends. Just wow.
Truly amazing. The skill, imagination, craftsmanship, attention to detail. German/Swiss engineering at its finest.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it :-)
I always enjoy your work! You’ve made it nearly impossible to watch any other “restoration” channels as your expertise and attention to detail outclasses anything else I’ve seen! Amazing!!
This was great! It had lots of steps, and the end product was worth the effort. Super tight!
Absolutely. Now I can actually align the hood nicely to the head light buckets and the fenders. Thank you very much.
with that kind of meticulous attention to detail, you'll be restoring this car for years
I hope you're wrong
@@mymechanicsinsights there's nothing wrong with that if that would end up being the case
Even with Mymech level of work, it won’t take forever. Not everything can and will be done by him alone. Some steps like paint, buying parts will by by third parties.
Project Binky anyone?
@@ytwos1não aposte nisso!
Every video is a learning experience.
Always nice to hear that, thank you very much!
All these smaller yet detailed videos have me drooling for the second episode on the main channel! I’ve never been this psyched for something on TH-cam in a while; the quality, the standards and the care you put into everything no matter how small makes my mechanics a truly enjoyable experience!
👋🏻
Completely excited on this side. The defining ingredients are back on a screen near us.
Shaping, blasting, plating, deburring, manufacturing (make a new one) etc.
Visual therapy!
Thank you 👌🏼
Hope you enjoy!
This really is the gold standard of restoration. Proper attention to detail and re manufacture and not a rattle can in sight.
This is so satisfying to watch. I am really pedantic, so I get stressed when watching other restoration channels, since they miss things.
Your videos are so relaxing to watch, because I know, you will do it right!
Thank you!
There must be a whole area of psychoanalysis to explain why so many people feel the same way. I wonder if its simply that most of us are gearheads, slightly on the spectrum. Little bit of OCD.
another week worth of work inside an 8 minute video. So great.
Was it really a full week? Feels less now when looking back. Defitintely took some time with the nickel plating and also making and testing of the pressing tool. Thank you
Hello, I was watching you from Uzbekistan, and a master like you is rare in the world. This work is not for everyone.
If this car comes up to auction and includes the provenance of these videos, it will be the first million dollar Z. No question.
The level of attention to detail and care you put into every little thing you do is amazing. When you're done this car is going to be better than any of the Z's that rolled off the assembly line.
spending a week to remake hinges no one will ever notice, i just know this build is gonna take a few years, but i love it!
content for years, my mechanics 100 years, 100 episodes per year! this is gonna be a museum piece 👌
This will probably be one of the most perfect cars on this planet, when even the hood hinges don’t have production marks 😂 Great work!
This car is going to the the pinnacle of quality once you're finished. The amount of attention you give each individual piece is amazing.
The noise of the worn out hinges was a real torture for the ears . And the panel alignment that they caused a torture for the eyes . Thank you for solving this . I really missed the " I'll make a new one " . Thank you for sharing .
I must admit your attention to detail regarding the edges of those components speaks volumes about the quality of this restoration and the justice you will be doing this iconic car from my childhood - thank you for sharing
out of all the shows i watch on cars this is the first time iv see hinges fixed, good job bud,thanx...................peace
Yay! Very happy to see you drop a new video. 🤗 Exciting to watch this restore unfold. 🎉
I'm glad you like it :-)
I always appreciate how well cared for all of his tools appear. The drill press is flawless, the benchtop is clear of clutter and clean, etc.
And that sandblasting cabinet power button -
but it seems the power button on the sand blaster missing the light bulb inside
Every day with My Mechanics content is a good day...
Красота! Вот что значит культура производства! Почистил, фаски на отверстиях снял, заусеницы спилил.
Молодец!!!
И нас так учили в своë время, когда работал на опытном производстве.
This will be the most beautiful restoration ever made in history
Bravo MM. You even made a new one! Thank you so much for this (short) installment of the epic rebuild.
My pleasure!
What a neat restoration. I can't wait to see more of the 240Z!
same here :-)
Ah the good old days of the master restoring something to perfection. WE WANT MORE and more often. Pleeeeeeese??!!. Your videos are an escape from a world gone crazy.
If you take this much care for parts that people won't see, not even exaggerating, this will be literal work of art.
The passion for detail and quality precision is unmatched!! Can’t wait for the next video!! Greetings from Zürich
This will be the most valuable 240Z on the planet when you are done.
That would be nice
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
5:11 “I make a new one” or some version of that is the whole reason I watch this channel. I don’t know exactly why but seeing those words brings me joy.
Those are the most beautiful hood hinges I've ever seen in my entire life.
This is awesome, MM. That was really enjoyable plus...(drum roll please) we got I MADE A NEW ONE!😁This was your usual perfection in restoration. Thanks for sharing.
Just a short quick and easy one ;-)
Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it
This is not just restoration.
This is upgrade !
This car is going to be a Swiss timepiece on four wheels. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This thing will belong in a museum, eventually.
Quel régal de voir encore ce souci du détail. La chaîne la plus inspirante sur YT…
I finished bingewatching your videos just in time
Nice to hear that, thanks :-)
This channel (and in particular this project) constantly redefines perfection. As in "What does it mean to create "perfect" hood hinges?" The demonstration is equal parts craft and art.
My 1972 240z is the best car I’ve ever owned. I miss it dearly and hope yours brings you the kind of joy mine brought me
Seeing the care you have on details, it is obvious that this car will be better than it was out of the factory ! Great skills at work 👏
Glad to hear that, thank you very much
@@mymechanicsinsights Agreed with OP, I have done this sort of restoration on other items, it ends up better than the original! BTW, I wouldn't assume that the hinge was very heavily worn - a little bit, maybe, but the originals had substantial slop by design to make them easier to assemble on the line.
This is funny because those hinges are not worn out. The hood hasn't been opened and closed that many thousand times. They were simply sloppy since new and nobody else would even notice. You just improved them.
Nothing like watching a skilled machinist put a lot of time, effort and love really, into an old piece of machinery and giving it a new life. Sorry I have nothing substantial to add other than praise because fabrication and machining are so interesting but I have zero idea about how it all works and a million questions but what I do know is that you make it all look very easy. Thank you Mr. MM, can't wait for more on this project.
It is SO satisfying to watch you get "in there" and make "IT"
"Much, MUCH Better than New!". Truthfully and Literally. 😌🤤☺
You can always find the true meaning of perfection here👏🏼
Glad to hear that :-)
There isn’t a single video by you that doesn’t far exceed the standard for being intriguing and educational! Truly a one-of-a-kind channel thanks to your precision and quality. Thanks Mr. Mechanics! Can’t wait to afford seeing more on your Patreon, I have a lot of catching up to do :)
This is going to be the Rolls Royce of all 240Z's!
I think I just realized how amazing this restoration is going to be
I was wondering why its taking so incredibly long for the full part 1 to come out but the attention to detail... you really amaze me every time
Nice one! That was absolutely worth the work!
Not just worth it, it was really needed. Thank you very much
I hope this man realises that when hes done he will have by far the best example of a 240z in the world
This will be the most bespoke 240 out there. My great uncle had one and my grand father loved driving it when he would visit him in CA. I've really enjoyed this series, thank you for giving this beautiful car your attention.
Why doesn't this guy have a show on Netflix for example? It would certainly be one of the best car restorations series ever produced.
I'm sure he doesn't need any pressure from Netflix managers.
it still will be, he doesn't need Netflix.
@@namshimaru Did he tell you that?
@@walves4965 why would he need to? I don't see him asking for help from Netflix, nor do I see him complaining about not receiving help from Netflix. And despite that he's currently producing the series.
Just look at that sandblaster. Look at it! Switch not broken, gloves without holes. You've come a long way. 😂
haha
Always enjoy watching my mechanics "make a new one"! 👍😁
I knew this was the kind of content we would get when MM debuted the 240. In fact, I think my reaction was "oh no". This resto will take 5 years guaranteed, and I will enjoy every minute.
Soooo, getting rid of fabrication marks, it looks like you're going for competition-grade restoration from the Datsun owners society! I like it! It'll take you a decade but you'll get to say it was better than when it came out of the factory!
Better than factory is the goal
Such beautiful craftsmanship.
Many many thanks :-)
"I make new ones"
A collective cheer can be heard around the globe.
Attention to detail, precision at work and consistency this is a joy to watch.
Идеальная работа мастера. Смотреть одно удовольствие!👏👏👏
Спасибо за видео!👍👍👍
Amazing job my friend congratulations 👏👏👏
Glad you like it :-)
It is sufficient to say that there is a possibility that this will not only be the most perfect example of it's kind anywhere in the world, but indeed the most perfect example of anything😮. Cannot wait to see this completed😊
The best of the best restorator on youtube. I need more video
The crusade against sharp edges continues!
You make it look too easy. That's annoying.
leave them zinc plated instead of painting
At first I was so sure to get them painted, but I'm not so sure anymore... We'll see.
I scrolled through the comments to see if anyone else commented this! Please don't paint them!!!
This is going to be the most beautifully restored Z car ever. The level of care and detail put into restoring it to better than new condition is great.
Nice work and fun to watch. I’m impressed that you plated the parts. When I have a cleaned and sandblasted or soda blasted part that’s bare metal, I wear gloves to handle the parts until they are plated or coated to prevent the oils and salts on my hands from contaminating the parts. When I was young, the guy that I worked with at the gas station had a sweet 67 Chevelle SS 396 with a handprint on the roof where a sweaty line worker placed his hand. It was right above the driver’s door. It was so clear that you could easily see the fingerprints of the entire hand.
Please by a drill press vise before you loose your fingers!
Und wiedermal perfekte Arbeit abgeliefert! Das schauen deiner Videos wie du an Projekte ran gehst ist höchstgratig befriedigend! Danke.
I honestly just love watching your car come to life.
For the love of everything holy, piece by piece. So crisp and perfect that Datsun will run for a century.
Built for my grand grandson ;-)
Instead of repairing them, you upgraded them. Great work.
That's the goal :-)
I'm so excited to see the fully restored car, can't wait
I don't think even high end cars can say they are as lovingly handcrafted as this 240Z will be at the end of this journey
When ever you say "I make new ones" on a project, a big grin comes across my face. They will be better designed than the originals, made of better material and will actually compliment the thing you are restoring. Any time you want to restore my 2003 Ford Lightning give me a call. I think you're the only guy I'd let tackle the job.
Never seen so much effort put into hood hinges! Bravo
Wow! I will never get tired of watching you work. They look like rhey were just fabricated.
This is why I come here. Beautiful work.
This dude doing a great job restoring his own datsun 240z i love it ❤
As someone that's done this process for mid-fifties Ford cars and truck hinges, I appreciate the process you went through here! 😍😎
In 2000 years, all archaeologists in Switzerland will find are remnants of buildings and this guys Datsun 240Z with a slight layer of dust. So impressive his restoration skills.
Credit to the original designers/engineers - what a well made mechanism.
I can just about replace a light bulb on my car and the windscreen wiper blades. You're a very clever bloke and i thoroughly enjoy watching your videos 👏👍
You inspire me to achieve higher levels of quality and attention to detail in my own work, thank you for uploading these - you have a lovely workshop
lol filing off the stamp marks is wild, this project is going to be above and beyond a new factory vehicle
I doubt there has ever been a car restoration that has this level of detail put in to restoring the original parts to better than factory, A true concourse nut and bolt restoration. Excellent as always 😊
perfect way to start a Friday morning. nice cup of hot coffee and a new my mechanics video.
It's this kind of attention to detail that's going to make the final result a masterpiece. Great work!
Just yesterday I was thinking how much I appreciate your videos. I was feeling it had been too long since I had watched one. I love that you can show such care to a part that would otherwise be invisible and ignored. Thanks for the show!
This is true love for metal, every single piece you work becomes a work of art
Once it’s done, this car’s gonna be in better shape than when it was new! 👏👏👏
