This video is a culmination of many months of research into the world of Rust. I don't know what the back-story really is, this is all at best speculation and the true story is firmly in the hands of the developers to reveal to us when they're ready.

I was speaking to a friend of mine recently about the night sky of Rust while gazing at it beside a campfire and we had no idea there were real world correlations of constellations. The cross-crossing of truth is a comfortable fact. So, still our pale blue dot, after all. Cheers, Shadow! What a great film!

This was an impressive backstory, because you even attempted to explain the _GAMEPLAY_ mechanics. How we respawn. Most theories on any video game ever either have weak reasoning, or ignore it as "It's just for the sake of gameplay."
You gave a solid theory that gives me a bit of chin scratch and think "hm... maybe.."
Impressive theory, solid work, and with the evidence you got, this is pretty neat to think about it, and i've always enjoyed lore that attempts to explain that, like Dark Souls

What an absolute great video! it is really obvious that you have put a lot of time into it and i want to thamk you for that! the use of in game items in this video as part of the lore is perfectly made and it would not suprise me if facepunch borrowed a part or two, or i certanlty hope they do because i really like it the way you presented it! keep up the The work you are doing, because its the best you have been. i watch a lot of youtube but rarely like or subscribe. this video absolutely deserve both!!

A stupid amount of time that's how much.. If time can be measured in stupids it would have been a lot of them.
The biggest secret is the question why I find this in my suggestions, 4 years after release. As someone who has never played Rust and never plans to. An even bigger mystery might be the question why I've enjoyed this so thoroughly.

Take it as a stylish way to say "unexplicably at the time when it was first noticed" but given what he said before about the cobalt effects some studies were performed and we now know they respawn in the light of the regeneration power of cobalt. Why on the beach ? I make it a cobalt concentration matter in link with the presence of salt water. Too far on the sea is too much salt and too deep in the land is too much radiations in the air (still too small amounts to affect you, hence no radiation poisoning everywhere, but enough to prevent the reaction leading to regeneration). That s my "open minded" take on it :)

Cobalt is the rust version of fallout's vault tec.

I thought that maybe the survivors on the island are ex employees that were promised immortality as seen on the poster since cobalt industries was running out of funding and test subjects so they were forced to test on their own employees. Maybe after they were made immortal the subjects were abandoned while the owner fleed because of the change to democracy near him. Later the subjects realised that it was a living hell and over all that time on the island not being able to die they became the savages we see on the island due to the mental helltl they were going through thats why they defaced the poster of the owner and the word immortality then later the us government discovered the island and decided to conduct research maybe the air drops are meant to be for the scientists but you have alot more evidence than me also great video

Did I enjoy the video? No, I absolutely loved it! I seen a heap of Rust content out there, but this video is BY FAR the best one. Raiding, PVP, building and roleplay dwarven in comparison to this. It is an absolute masterpiece! Kudos to you Shadowfrax!!

this is bloody brilliant, my one disagreement is who the inhabitants are. They aren't prisoners, they are military. Look at the insane skill set of these guys, survivalist, toolsmith, metalsmith, chemist, mechanic, machinist, expert marksman, parkour legends, tailor, engineer, architect, pilot, the list is crazy, these guys are the worlds top of the top special forces...now the question is why are they here?

im brand new to this whole entire game, never seen content about it or anything but heres what im thinking, its all an experiment and the scientists are protecting some important things while one helicopter drops off supplies, the other just checks up on the island

I loved the video and kinda formed my own one shot Esq story, this is the general idea I came up with. Following World War II the Soviet Union seeing the power the U.S.A had used against Japan, they became interested even more in nuclear technology. They scooped up as many Nazi scientists as they could and sent them to a small very radical island to experiment with nuclear technology. The Union had recently mined large amounts of Cobalt and discovered the island also held a fair amount. The union sent the cobalt along with funds to the island, the formerly Nazi scientists were happy to continue working but weren't organized. The union saw this and found a man who wanted nothing more than to experiment with nuclear technology and hired him as the director of the experiment. This man was the founder of cobalt. He arrived on the island and quickly took charge, ordering all to speak a common language of English, giving the brilliant scientists a place to funnel their intelligence. Knowing cobalt was the most common nuclear element at his disposal he decided to make a symbolic gesture and name the project "Cobalt". The man was not malevolent and was well received. The project continued for years until it started to slow down, the scientists were short of employees and some test subjects so they began to advertise how great the project was, it was not a ruse, just the promise of working on something for the future. The testing continued for years, little did the Soviet Union know, the U.S.A had discovered the island in the 60s but had simply watched, intrigued by the experimentation. The project continued, but was slowly deteriorating, the project seemed to begin to crumble along with the Soviet Union, projects became more and more deadly and less contained. The Soviet Union to busy with its own political turmoil took no notice of this and forgot about project Cobalt. The experiments led to very localized pockets of radiation. When the union fell in the early 90s, america had been expecting this and within weeks had taken control of the project, they were met with no force. The director of cobalt asked that he only be allowed to continue his research, the U.S.A agreed. The U.S.A brought in cars and funding and let the scientists use what they were familiar with, the Russian tech, but gave them some american things like the cars. Several years later the U.S.A had a change of heart and ordered the project shut down and all research handed over, the director of cobalt knowing only weapons would come of this, hid all the data, ordered his staff to flee and destroyed all the experiments he could while simultaneously bathing the island in the largest batch of radioactive cobalt he had, the cobalt used in the immortality project. He fled the island and the U.S.A became busy with the war on terrorism and the economy crash, left the island to cool before coming back. At this point I use your theory of the scientists and life sentence inmates with the immortality and supplies and things. Just a one shot sort of head crack idea I had been forming for the past couple months.
Maybe the people who worked there are the rust players! They had to be eliminated so nobdy would know about the project but for some reason they became immortal.

Honestly as thought out as this backstory is what really made me interested in the world was imagining that there is a major war going on in the world or at least that society has fallen. You and others have survived a shipwreck or a plane crash and you wash up on the island. We then get a lord of the flies situation where you try to survive and dominate the other survivors.
How odd is it that the day I decide to dig into rust lore I watch a 6 year old video on 05/10/2024?? The day the game takes place?!

Hello, Shadowfrax. After watching this video (which is great btw), many doubts and speculations got cleared. But one still remains. You did a pretty good job at explaining the respawn system (nakeds on the beach and animals). But what about sleeping bags and beds?
+mihaimartinov Rust may have lore but it isn't lore-driven. We can't expect every gameplay mechanic or aspect of the world to fit into it. At the end of the day such things are just there to make the game work as what it is, a game.
