This is my first TH-cam video! I start with a little introduction about myself: I graduated a year ago (7 months at the time this video was filmed) from ArtCenter College of Design. I got my BFA in illustration, and after graduation I stopped making art for a little bit. I began working at Barnes and Noble which made me fall in love with illustration again. I love book covers, and being surrounded by them at work was so inspiring! My goal is to build a book cover portfolio so I can get some freelance jobs designing book covers and eventually a children’s book (my dream)!
This art vlog is the start of my illustration art career. So the first book in my design portfolio will be a redesign of Everything I Know About Dolly Alderton. This is a memoir, kind of self help, life advice type book surrounding the topic of love. I really enjoyed it, and I gave a little book review in the video. My first step in this process is making thumbnails, brainstorming, and coming up with ideas of how I want the book cover to look. I’m designing the front, back, and spine.
My original plan was to arrange collage cut out gouache paintings of lipstick, a bra, macaroni, and other personal items falling out of a purse. I eventually settled on the idea of drawing three bras to represent different time periods of life and love during those stages. I played around with graphic design, set type, and handwritten type. I decided handwritten type with different styles and colors was the most fun way to continue.
About half way through the video there’s a surprise intermission book haul! I went to the Ripped Bodice, Barnes and Noble, and Thrift books. The books I mention are The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman (a fiction romance book), A Natural History of the Romance Novel by Pamela Reigs (a nonfiction on the romance genre), Theft by Finding: Diaries (1977-2002) by David Sedaris, Just Kids by Patti Smith (a memoir), and Women in Clothes by Heidi Julavits, Leanna Shapton, and Sheila Heti.
So join me for this Draw With Me studio/art vlog! And join me on my illustration career journey!
