In this video I decorate a jewelry trinket box for my friend’s birthday. I went to Michael’s, picked out the perfect wooden box and a plastic bear toy that I will hot glue to the top. I also found some fun decorations like sticky gem hearts, a plastic pencil case, and mod podge gloss acrylic sealer. So there’s a fun little Michael’s haul!
The first step of beginning this craft is to tape off the metal clasps on the box, then I prime the box with some white acrylic paint, and hot glue wooden letters to the front that spell out my friend’s name. Next step, it’s time to paint! I’m using Golden acrylic paint, and there’s also a surprise review of Sargent Art Time glitter tempera paint. You’ll find me testing some of these paints in my New Soho mixed media sketchbook. You’ll basically get to paint with me through some time lapse painting clips. I start by doing all the base layers and build up the opacity until I get to paint the details (my favorite), and then I work around the box, one side at a time. Every now and then I do a little art check in, so you can see my progress.
Once the painting is done, I start working on the inside of the box. I pick out cute vintage floral and other patterned fabrics to line the inside. I get them to stick using Golden Matte Medium and Gloss Mod Podge made to work with paper. Then I line the top of the inside with two different vintage trims. Next, I set everything in place by spraying the Mod Podge gloss acrylic sealer on the outside of the box.
And finally, it’s time for the finishing touch: to hot glue the gem hearts to the front, and hot glue the plastic bear to the lid. The final box has painted illustrations on each side. The front has a three dimensional aspect with the wooden letterforms spelling out my friend’s name. The letters are pink with blue polka dots on top. Above the name, it says “wow” in a word bubble, and above that are different colored squares that each hold one of the heart gems.
The top of the box is yellow with a cute and wonky painted purple doily over it. And then the bear affixed. I gave the bear some accents such as painted red toenails and fingernails, pink blush cheeks, and I turned her into a sun bear by painting a light brown spot on her chest. The left side of the box says “ciao for now” with a landline phone painted next to it. The right side of the box has a big red heart with “BFF” in the middle. Surrounding the heart are super fun stripes that lead to the edge of the box. And on the back side, is a pink plaid pattern and a mustache with the caption “well hello there.” This video is a bit of a studio vlog, mixed with crafting, painting, and a lot of planning!

That was so fun to watch ! It looked so refreshing to just go with the flow ! As an artist myself, I really struggle with letting go and letting the creativity and quirkyness (is it grammaticaly correct ?) explode ! 😍 really inspiring !
