  • A run through of the gear and leaders I have been using so far this winter of fly fishing on the lakes here in Victoria, Australia. Here I construct a straight fluorocarbon leader from scratch, connect it to my fly line and it is so simple!
    Gear:
    - Cortland MKII 10ft 6 Weight Rod
    - Sage 2250 Reel
    - Cortland Competition Fast Intermediate Fly Line
    - Cortland Ultra Premium Fluorocarbon

Thanks Tom, that's WAY longer between flies than I have been fishing, mine are usually only 2 foot apart, can't wait to try this set up and see if I am more successful

Thank you Tom, that's very helpful. Q: Why do you prefer the intermediate over a floater? is it because it gets the streamers under the surface and fishing straight away? I noticed you seem to fish very fast retrieves. The advice I was given was to mostly use a figure 8 even with streamers? It's worked for me but only sometimes. I have had a lot of trouble with the smelters.

I dont always prefer the inter over a floater and probably fish the floater just as much. As far as retrieve speed, I am all about water coverage this time of year. But ultimately you need to give the fish the retrieve they want on the day, so it changes all the time

    Hi Tom
Wondering if you could show how you tie the surgeons knot in a closer view? Interested in why you put the knot in your mouth as part of the process?

Nice tip Tom thanks for sharing. When casting with this setup do you keep the loops relatively wide/open to prevent tangles?

    • @tomjarmanfishing3208
      @tomjarmanfishing3208  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yep spot on, I often throw like a Belgium or oval/constant tension cast to stay tangle free too

Bill's confused Tom . . . A fast sinking line is one that sinks quickly (read fast), yes? An intermediate sinking line is one that sinks at an 'intermediate' (read medium?) rate, yes?
Please, what is a fast/intermediate line? Is it a nuancing of the two terms, where the line might be a sinker to the extent that it sinks faster than a 'medium' speed sinking line?
Maybe I should be talking to JB? If that happened, he'd be wanting to 'sell' me one. Nice as JB is, I'd feel bad if I ended up not buying one.

So sinking lines are rated in inches per second. An Intermediate typically sinks at 1.5 inches per second. A fast Intermediate line like the Cortland one I use sinks at 2-3 inches per second. There are slow intermediates that sink at 0.5-1 inch per second.
All sinking lines will tell you what their actual sink rate is. Hope that is helpful

@@tomjarmanfishing3208 Thanks mate. I do get all that . . . slow, medium, fast sink rates with the varying rates per second of sink.
I probably didn't phrase my question properly. It was the 'intermediate' thing that did and still does throw me.
In the Cortland range, there is also a thing called a FO-Tech Intermediate.
If you are able, a definition of 'intermediate' will allow me to sleep tonight.
Sad isn't it - lying awake at night, tossing, turning and mulling over in one's mind, the various attributes of flylines. Maybe one should get a life.

You rarely ever respond to comments or questions though! Not saying your content is not great, but until you start interacting with people your content won't get promoted enough to get you any viewers....just sayin'

@@tomjarmanfishing3208 haha fishing is def more fun than video editing. At the end of the day I don't produce any content so I'm talking out of my $@#&, but the stuff you post is GOOD. You should have 40k subscribers, the current numbers aren't representative! You're pulling good fish out of tough to fish locations :)
