At 5'9" she would have had a hard time getting cast. She would have towered over or at least stood at the same height as her male co-stars. No heels for her.

@@nancyomalley6286 She was! Plus she often wore flats while her leading men were wearing dressier shoes that could easily give them an extra inch or two.
Dagnabit, don't leave out Jayne Mansfield. She is my favorite blonde bombshell of the 1960s. She was not the best actress or screen comedienne of the era, but she was honest about what she was doing professionally and high in mental stability. OCEAN. Openness to new experiences - high. Conscientiousness - high. Exroversion - high. Agreeableness - for the type, high. Neuroticism - low. That makes her a nine on 2 to -2 scale for every trait. Marilyn was a five. She bombed on neuroticism, that's for sure. Most people don't know it, but Jayne and Marilyn allegedly both had presidential congress with you-know-who.
Great list! So many shorter actresses earlier on, begs the question about diets and if they would have been taller if nutrition was different in childhood (for men and women). But also that perhaps had benefits for filming or if that was just more the culturally appealing smaller-framed female thing. Very interesting.
This is great! Now, how about a companion piece covering actresses from say the 70s to now? Or you could break it down 60s-80s, 90s-2000s: whatever works best for you.
I enjoyed this video! I’d like to see the same women but in order of their first movie or something like that so we can see how the height and beauty standards changed over time.

I’ve made around 20 of these videos on different topics, you will have to look! Regarding older people not so much, but I am planning classic singers over the coming weeks. Not sure of the first queen elizabeth ‘s height, but regarding Mae West she was famous for long dresses and very large heels that you couldn’t see
This is fun and interesting. One quibble: Jane Powell is usually listed at 5’1” and her obit in the New York Times describes her as “just over 5 feet tall.” And she looks a bit taller than Judy Garland side by side (on Judy’s TV show).
You have to be careful of publicist info regarding height. Women are often presented as being shorter than they actually are and men as being taller. I don't remember who the actress was, but one who was slightly over 6' was told by her agent that he would not even try to represent her unless the claimed to be 5' 11 1/2. Allan Ladd was frequently paired with women whose stats said they were shorter than him, but actually turned out to be taller in person. This makes sense with him claiming extra height and the ladies claiming to be shorter than they were.
@@egyptianhibiscus9203 that’s a stupid thing to say. Grace Kelly was stunningly beautiful and 5’7…as were several other tall ladies in the video. Uma Thurman, Geena Davis and Brooke Shields are all 6 feet. Sigourney Weaver and Nicole Kidman are 5'11". Tamara Dobson, a glamorous black actress remembered for her 1973 role as Cleopatra Jones, was 6'2". Hope Emerson, who appeared in several movies in the 40s and 50s, notably Westward the Women, was also 6'2". For those with long memories, she was the voice of Elsie the Cow in the 1950s. Many here were a surprise, looking taller or shorter on the screen, probably due to high heels or the lack of them. Back in the day, old height and weight charts for women included an extra 2" for heels.
The first three you mentioned are yes 6’ or just under, but none of those 3 are classic actresses. Nor is Kidman. Dobson and Westwood I dunno about so can’t comment
Ann Sheridan is a favorite of mine. Wow... didn't know she was only 5'4. In most of the films that I've seen her in, she seems to stand fairly equal to the men around her. She had a very strong presence in front of the camera, so I guess it helped 'elevate' her.
My favorite movie of hers is, I was a Male War Bride, with Cary Grant. There was a scene they were in Bremerhaven Germany at building 11. My barracks was in Bremerhaven at building 11 at Carl Schurz Kaserne.
She's great! Love her in Angels w/Dirty Faces, The Man Who Came to Dinner, King's Row--a great range. Some of the men she played opposite (e.g. Cagney) were quite short, so she may have seemed taller because of that.
Thank you for this compilation-very interesting and enjoyable; however, I was looking forward to seeing Alice Faye, who was a Hollywood queen and stood at 5’4”.
I remember going to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma many years ago. They had a display of one of the gowns that Miss Barbara Stanwyck wore in her role as Victoria Barkley on "The Big Valley" TV series in a glass case. I was astounded at how tiny she was and kept walking around the case in amazement. She had such a huge personality on TV and in film, that I assumed she was taller, at least 5'8". She was mighty at 5'5". Another actress who I thought was much taller is Sarah Michelle Gellar of "Buffy, The Vampire Slayer." I was at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas and wouldn't have noticed her if she hadn't been speaking. I recognized her voice, looked over and was astounded at how tiny she is. She's 5'4" but seems taller on screen.
Did you watch early Buffy season 2 or 3? When she was with Angel, you will notice her size. The other actors and actresses are probably chosen to be around her size.

I have never minded being tiny and petite. Tall, short, and in-between guys found my height (lack thereof) appealing. The tall ones felt taller around me. Shorter ones found me ideal. They were all taller than I. I was perceived as feminine. Never got any complaints. Life is a beautiful blessing. I'm grateful to the Lord.🥰
Great video and thanks! Didn’t know that most of these women are of average Asian build but they all look so well balanced and slim. I guess the height increment nowadays is a lot to do with the food we take in which has gotten much chemical stuff embedded in them. 😂
Wide open spaces, less population, clean water and nutritious food increases people’s heights over the decades. The questionable substances they put in our food affects things a lot, too, though, like early menstruation and bodies being preserved in their graves many, many years more than before - both icky facts, but facts is facts!
Esther Williams was ~174 cm and noted how ridiculous she felt in Take Me Out to the Ball Game doing dance moves that had clearly been choreographed for someone much smaller.

Interesting video. 😊I am short, and it's never been a problem for me. I think personality makes up for the lack of height. But beauty standards can be cruel, and height is included in that. You have to be tall to be a model, even if now you can be a plus model, but not short. I think it's descriminatory. Who came up with that idea anyway? When I was a teenager I wanted to be a flight attendnant, but in my country I was considered too short. I think it had to do with not being able to reach, though. But other than that, short ladies are just as capable and gorgeous. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Fascinating! It’s surprising to learn the actual heights of women I’ve watched and in films for decades! So many have the aura of less or more height than in actuality! I guess it is related to their onscreen presence and the roles they’re playing.

Short women carried themselves different back in the day: often elongating their legs when they walked, stretching out their arms in front of their torso when gesturing, always holding their head up high: all while looking elegant and fluid, natural, graceful and not struggling. The women back then were a lot more feminine which made them seem much more attractive even if their features were mere average.
Davis reads different depending on sources about her height, all thought all reads that she was quite short 😊. So many of these classic actresses where so beautiful, especially the ones from the 1930s - 1950s.
I knew they were petite but I didn’t realize how tiny some of them really were. I’m the shortest woman in my entire extended family (you know, aunts, cousins, sisters, etc) and I’m 5’5”. All the other women in my family start at 5’9” and go up to 6’2”. They are forever wondering aloud, in my presence of course, that they have no idea what happened to me. It can be very annoying to be as short as I am because everyone leaves things where I can’t reach them without thinking about it.
Same here. I'm 5'5," my brother is 5'11"(I think) & my late male cousin was 5'8". The rest of my aunts, female cousins & uncles (my daddy too...Momma's side was average height) were 6' or taller. We 3 were the shortest. I used to wonder what happened. Nobody bugged us bout the height differences🤣
It depends where you look. Some sources say five and some six. Interestingly the average guess on celeb heights forum is nearer 6 and after looking at a few photos and footage of her with the queen I went with 6. Definitely in that range, could have gone in the middle
En effet, ça démontre que la taille n'agit que peu sur l'esthétique globale. Juste une question de types propres à l'interprétation de certains rôles plus ou moins féminins voire enfantin ou assumé presque masculin. Ok I think celebheights have her a little lower but thanks
You have to be careful of publicist info regarding height. Women are often presented as being shorter than they actually are and men as being taller. I don't remember who the actress was, but one who was slightly over 6' was told by her agent that he would not even try to represent her unless the claimed to be 5' 11 1/2.
