How to Paint Terracotta Clay Pots Using Acrylic Paint or Spray Paint

  • Painting terracotta clay pots is a super easy way to make them over so that they better match your home decor. Terracotta pots are so cheap and easy to find, and you can make them look even better with a bit of easy-to-find acrylic craft paint or spray paint. Here's how I paint my pots to seal them and avoid the paint bubbling and chipping.

    Great info! I had a bunch of questions rolling around, keeping me from getting started and you answered them all. I think I'll compromise by doing black geometric designs with lots of negative space so I keep as much of the moisture-wicking properties of the terracotta. Thanks!!

    Hi there! Thank you for the great vid! Questions..when sealing the pot prior to painting, do you spray inside and outside? Also if you are only painting the lower portion of a pot, should you still seal the entire pot or just where you will be painting? Lastly, do you seal after painting as well? Thanks! :)

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi!! I seal the inside and outside. Theoretically just sealing the outside would work, but I generally do both just to make sure no moisture can get through. I don't seal over top of the paint if i'm using an acrylic paint that is self-sealing (like a lot of DecoArt's paints). Have fun painting!!

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's Antique Bronze by the company DecoArt! For outdoors, I just use any acrylic paint labeled "outdoors"--DecoArt has a Patio Paint line, but there are many others!

  • @AnnM847
    @AnnM847 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the tutorial. I painted a concrete pot with acrylic paint (navy blue) which came up really well but I wanted to paint a band of rose gold round the bottom. i ordered deco art rose gold metallic paint but i was really disappointed as its not very opaque , very transparent and just looks like a shine rather than paint. I dont think I would achieve the solid colour Im looking for even with multiple layers. Am i doing something wrong? Should I use a spray paint instead?

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I think it depends on the color. I found that Antique Bronze usually took 2-3 coats to get an opaque finish. Definitely more than one coat with the shimmery/shiny colors.

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends, I usually set mine under a ceiling fan to speed along the drying process, but the paint you use should have a dry time on its bottle!

    Hey, love the pots! Question, clay pots are also great for helping the plant breathe, but I’m unsure if I want to give that up. Is there something you recommend to help keep this factor or is there nothing I can do and it’s either I give that up or not paint it at all.

      Pretty much once you paint them you give up that up.

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, you definitely give that benefit up. However, I've found that the high absorption of the clay is actually too drying for some plants, so just consider the plant's needs before planting it in a painted, glazed, or plastic pot :)

    • @18MelCR
      @18MelCR ปีที่แล้ว

      By using a penetrating sealant that gets absorbed into the clay, the pot should still be breathable. Hope this helps

      So would this work for making candles? I want to paint the pots stylish, but do I also need the waterproof sealer since I'm not using them for plants?

    • @ByBrittanyG
      @ByBrittanyG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's true actually! The terracotta clay is absorbant, which is great for some plants. Painting it will seal the clay, so that removes the "breathing" ability (which is really just the pot soaking in excess water). It's not a big deal for many plants though.
