Terracotta pots dirty pour acrylic flow art painting NO silicone No heat AMAZING results

  • I'm doing quite a lot of these lately and have found that the results are more to my liking without adding silicone and heat.
    When planing these two, I kept the carmine out of the second pour intending to drizzle it over at the end, however, I was so impressed with the result without it that I left it off. What do you think? Was it the right decision?

      Linda Johnston thank you for your words. If I can give you one tip for doing pots, make your paint slightly thicker than you normally would to get better coverage on the pots. I made several pretty but awful mistakes with these when I started doing them! And I was determined to get cells! Ultimately when I did, I didn't like them. So now I just use sparkles instead, pearl paints or added iridescent medium. All the best with yours 😊

    • @kalenaflows4574
      @kalenaflows4574  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Latressa Allen the sky is the limit, it's so much satisfaction and fun seeing the paint create patterns and watching them change and settle. My only suggestion on using glass as opposed to terracotta is to make the paint a little thicker to decrease the amount of flow as the glossy surface of glass means the paint wants to keep flowing and will get quite thin. The inside will look fascinating as well! All the best, Kalena

    I'm wondering if the porous pots would be more vivid if you had sprayed them first with a sealer? Asking because I want to try this. They are great. What does the inside look like with the hole allowing paint in?

    • @kalenaflows4574
      @kalenaflows4574  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sharon Carty if you check out a couple of most recent videos you'll see that the varnish put on at the end actually makes the colour pop and it looks like when it was wet. These ones just sold before I remembered to photograph them finished!

    • @kalenaflows4574
      @kalenaflows4574  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sharon Carty oh and I missed responding to your second question, sorry, the inside of the pot is all clear from paint as I have the pots sitting on cups so the extra paint falls directly into there and can be used for another pour sometimes though usually is too messy by then. Have a great day! Kalena

      Llana Dyess thank you. I don't use a primer on the pots. Internally I seal them to waterproof them and use a regular terracotta pot and ornament sealer. After painting I finish with an indoor outdoor clear gloss made by dulux. I have half a dozen sitting on my front porch by the door with succulents growing in them.

      Katrina Hoskin the sealer only takes around 4 hours. Two coats are needed to achieve a decent degree off waterproofing though. From memory I think it's 4 hours between coats then 48 until it can be used for plants.

    Wow thankyou for the video. Definately will try doing. Just wonder, whats the difference with/without silicone and heat?

    • @kalenaflows4574
      @kalenaflows4574  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you :) the silicone adds a clearer and more uniform cell structure to the pattern produced by the layers of paint. It isn't necessary to add it as you will still get a cell structure without it, it will simply be different. The heat brings out the cells quicker so you will get more uniformity as more will dorm at the same time, again, this is the case with or without silicone. Neither heat nor silicone is necessary and passing around with different combinations will let you discover your preferences. Good luck, I know you will enjoy it!

      Aqidas Irisab hi, you would but you may find it peels off very readily. I would try it like that first then, if it doesn't work, perhaps rubbing the vase with sandpaper to create a rough surface for the paint to stick to will work. Good luck!

      Syly Syly I pour directly onto the pots. The inside is treated and the varnish that goes on the paint waterproofs the outside. Also the floetrol and pva go towards helping to waterproof the outside but on their own don't waterproof.

      Syly Syly that would be a lovely gift! They're treated with Bondall terracotta pot and ornament sealer. I picked it up at a hardware shop. It shouldn't be too difficult to track down a similar product if you can't find the same where you are. I'd guess any plant nursery or place that sells pots would be able to point you to the best product for the job. All the best with it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

      rkyobo I haven't used minwax so would suggest contacting the manufacturer to see if they have any advice on if they would recommend it for this kind of product. I use generally 2 or 3 coats of Micador spray varnish. I decide on how many coasts by how well the coats have adhered and that is usually dependent on how much silicone I've used in the paint.

    Beautiful!! Did you mix the paint with water?

      Hi, thank you. The paint is mixed with Floetrol, PVA, and a very small amount of silicone. You can use water instead of Floetrol but I prefer the latter as the patterns are a little crisper.

      Thank you! I use Dulux indoor/outdoor clear gloss spray for the pots. This has worked fantastically for me. You should be able to find this or similar product in any paint shop.

    What size are these pots and where did you get them?

    Very beautiful design and idea i must say. Is there any other way to get similar design without wasting so much paint?

      Shibani Datta thanks! I use extra paint as I create jewellery from the flow off paint when it dries. Using less paint isn't a problem as looking as you manage to cover the entire pot.

    Hi! Did you seal/varnish your pots to be outside? If so what did you use?

    • @kalenaflows4574
      @kalenaflows4574  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Heather, I seal the internal with a terracotta sealer - two coats with 24 hours between them, and I varnish using a dulux indoor outdoor gloss. These are both extremely effective and I have had half a dozen pots in varying sizes sitting out the front of my house for the past 3 years and they look like new still.

    I was wondering if this would work with epoxy. Blend your dye and epoxy together. Then layer the colors in one cup like you did, and pour. Thoughts?

      Swagger King hi there, I'm afraid I can't give you an answer on this one as I've not worked with epoxy. There's only one way to find out! Pick some colours and give it a whirl, you may be on to a beautiful thing. Art is all about having an idea and playing with it to see if it works if you can't find someone else already doing it. It's trial and error and learning along the way, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but it's fun! I hope you give it a go.
